Is there a big difference between students and depression ten years ago compared to depressed students today? In our society these days, it is unfortunately very common for students to be depressed, this depression can severely influence their grades and academic performance. However, you may think to yourself; what does a student have to be depressed about? The answer is that there are millions of things that could possibly contribute to a student being depressed whether you know it or not.
For instance, it could be little things such as, getting a bad grade on a test or an assignment that they worked hard on. Alternatively, it could be big things like, failing a class, or the fact that a relative has just passed away. It could be one thing,

Two case studies have proved that too be true, they are about ten years apart but they are very different in the methods that they have used. The first case study consisted of 700 students that were in there second year of high school compared to the second case study that consisted of 330 undergraduate students from Western Michigan University. The methods used by the first case study were two different questionaries’ the first questionnaire was designed for the students to measure there depression. It consisted on 18 items score on a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from one to five, one being strongly disagree and five being strongly agree. The second questionnaire was for the teachers this questionnaire was used to take the teachers responses about the student’s performances. The second questionnaire was set up the same as the students one being never or poor and five being very often or excellent in regarding the student’s performances. The second case study also used a survey method but it contained 68 questions that were organized into seven sections. The sections included details in academic experiences, employment status, demographic characteristics, health care evaluation, health status and productivity impairment related to depression and other health disorders. The surveys for the second case study are a lot more specific and probably helped obtain better results to help answer this question than the questionaries’ from the first case
According to National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), depression is a mood disorder that impairs both social and occupational functioning. Depression affects the way you feel, think, and executes the daily task, such as eating, working or sleeping. For an individual to be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.
According to an article by Josephine Marcotty in Minneapolis’ Star Tribune from April 10, college students lead “hyper-enriched lives,” said Greg Kneser, dean of students at St. Olaf College. That’s what makes this generation of students distinct from its predecessors, he said. That is why more students who cannot cope with these feelings end up at college counseling centers with “increasingly serious mental-health problems.” 15 to 20 percent of college students nationally were diagnosed with depression. The second most common diagnosis was severe anxiety. According to the article, it is not unusual for mental-health issues to become apparent during a student’s college years.
Do you ever feel down and out? Fill yourself loosing interest in thing you used to love? Then you might have depression. Depression is a period of time in which you feel sad. I know you are saying to yourself you are just a little down, but depression is a serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often unable to live in a normal way. There are multiple types of depression, that effects your mental state in various ways.
Major Depressive Disorder, according to Coon, is a mood disorder in which the person has suffered one or more intense episodes of depression. Major Depressive Disorder falls under mood disorders subtopic depressive disorders (Coon 2013). “Psychologist have come to realize that mood disorders (major disturbances in emotion) are among the most serious of all psychological conditions. In any given year, roughly 9.5 percent of the U.S. population suffers from a mood disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2011a)” (Coon 2013). I was one of the 9.5 percent. I have decided to write on this topic because I want to understand what causes it. I have been depressed before without medication or counseling and I wanted to know why do you get depressed and how does it impact you. This essay will talk about disorder information, disorder triggers, research on depression, treatment for depression, and theorist’s experiments for Major Depression Disorder.
Depression was once believed to affect mainly adults for various reasons. It was hardly ever seen in minors or college students. Today depression is more common in younger populations mainly college students. There are many things that can trigger depression in college students, such as the environment, anxiety, and the fear of failure. All these things can contribute to depression in college students and sometimes cannot be seen. Many college students will never seek help, and many wont ever admit that they struggle with it.
Mental illness is a number of different conditions that affect the body, mind, or emotion of a person. The stigma of mental illness, in general, puts a damper on students being afraid of getting help. Mental illness in college students has been on a rise in the last couple of years. Mental illness has become one of many leading causes in college students not completing their degree. Mental illness in college students has a large population who go untreated. Many students are unaware that they need help and the symptoms worsen. If mental illness is talked about more often than more people might be more aware and will become treated. This is causing the student to become closed off and fall behind in her studies. The subject may find difficulty in the upcoming examinations due to her marks being low from little lecture attendance and effort. Merriam-Webster defines depression as a state of being sad. Notably, it also states depression can be “marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies.” And that great dichotomy lies in the fact that being depressed and feeling depressed are just as related as they are differentiated.
In these two authentic forms of despair, it seems that S.K. is attempting to strike a balance, if not a synthesis, between the self and God, the temporal and the eternal, the finitude and the infinitude. In order to make sense of the human self, S.K. is illustrating that the self has two relations, each of which is fully capable of producing despair. The first is a relation of the self to itself, the second, a relation of the self to something else (God). As with freedom and necessity, in which no freedom may exist without the possibility of need, S.K. reminds us that there can be no despair without the “annihilated possibility of the ability to be in it” (45).

There are many people in the world who are struggling with the disease depression. Depression is the state in which a person feels very sad, hopeless and unimportant. Something that I really struggled with was the passing of my Grandmother. She was a strong woman and an inspiration to everybody in my family. I think that I struggled with it because she was a great human being, I kind of looked up to her a bit, and of course she was part of my family. I think that along with her passing, I struggled with the fact that she died when I thought that she did nothing wrong in her entire life and did not deserve to die.
