One of the numerous activities that I have been involved in throughout high school has been the Student Ambassador Club. In this club, students are chosen for outstanding grades and are recommended by the school’s staff. Beginning in freshman year when I was first nominated, I served at many events such as open houses and school assemblies. For instance, every year the Student Ambassador Club administers grandparents’ day for the elementary students at my school. During the first two years of high school, I volunteered for various clubs to discover my interests. At the time, clubs seemed similar to hobbies that American teenagers enjoy to pursue rather than develop practical skills. Reaching my second year, I joined the Kaiser Junior volunteering program after unexpectedly running into volunteers during a visit at Kaiser, and it left a warming impression that inspired me to sign up for the program. I vowed to work as hard as my peers and past volunteers, who achieved many recognitions and honorable pins. We would share experience and give advice to prospective students regarding classes, teachers, activities, and sports. I loved interacting with both students and parents and showing them how amazing my high school was, and I want to be able to do the same for Questrom. The National Honor Society is based off of four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. School is an extremely important part of anyone’s life, and I feel blessed that I have had the opportunity to attend Lutheran schools from Kindergarten until the present. Our Shepherd Lutheran and Lutheran High Northwest have helped me to grow in my faith and to continue to grow academically as well. Attending these schools has also allowed me to participate in many different extra-curricular activities such as Varsity Soccer in my freshman year, Varsity Track my sophomore year, Pit Band for school musicals, Jazz band, and Pep band. This 2009-2010 school year I also have the opportunity to be the First Chair Flute and Piccolo in regular Concert Band and the other band functions which will provide me with an opportunity to gain experience in leadership which will help me in college and in my future career. Service is an important activity to participate in. During the past two years I have helped my mom and the rest of the committee at my church with funeral luncheons. When there is a funeral at my church the family of the deceased has the option of having a luncheon at the church, and if they choose, following the funeral, the committee that my mom is on takes care of getting the food that the family wants, serving the food, and then cleaning up after the luncheon is over. When they need help I also go and help out. Also, my family recently became a Foster family for the Michigan Humane Society. In November of this year, I am going on a mission trip to Madrid, Spain, with my cousin, who is a pastor, and a group from his church, Valley Springs, in Roseville, California. Our main aim is going to be talking to the college students there and trying to plant churches. We are going to be helping them work on their English, and I will get to use my Spanish. I have also had the opportunity to work in the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer nursery which was my first paying job. Every Sunday morning I am in the nursery from 9 until 12, or later if needed, watching peoples children up to four years of age while they attend church.
I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to join National Junior Honor Society(NJHS). I would love to be a member. I think it is important for kids to be involved in the community. Also, myself personally it would be an honor to be a face for our school.
As a student at Northvale Public School, I have grown up with my older siblings being inducted into an organization called the National Junior Honor Society. I had seen all the hard work and dedication they put into their school work and activities just to get into this society, making me want to be just like them. Then a few weeks ago, I found a note on my desk in homeroom telling me that I had been nominated to be apart of this society. Through citizenship and character, leadership, and service, I intend on being inducted into the society I have heard so much about. Though it will take a lot of effort this school year, being a part of this society is a dream of mine that I will make sure to come true.
For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.
With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
I have participated in the school’s marching band for four years has a member of the color guard. The last two years I have even earned a leadership position. From being in marching band, I have learned the ability to look for a bigger picture in things. For instance, something that may not seem clear now may take a true shape in time. I have also gained working experience through my two lifeguarding jobs from the last three years. I have learned how “size up” a situation and see how to properly deal with a problem. I have also learned, through both commitments, how to time manage myself and both achieve in activity/work and in school. I believe that through these experiences, I can bring a different perspective to the Honors Program’s community and help better it in any way possible.
I was selected to be one of the Associate Student Council at my high school. Being in a student council, I learnt to establish goals, delegate my responsibilities, practice giving directions to the students on executing tasks successfully and organizing orientation activities for the new students. My teacher said that I had the ability to lead my friends and the new students. During my high school life, as one of the student council, I used to handle many orientation activities for the new students. For example, I conducted a tour around my high school compounds for the new students while giving them descriptions about the school. I am really confident that there are a lot of things that I learnt from this position which I can use if I was chosen as a new student orientation
If I had never become an ambassador as Bloomfield High School Miss Nashdoi, I wouldn’t be able to feel comfortable being out of my comfort zone. It taught me to be away from my parents for a week by traveling to different places and being on my own without the help from my parents. Learning to interact with children to elderly people. Being able to consider what life must offer with accepting opportunities that are given. It became my first time becoming an ambassador for my high school and my community. As a new 9th grade student at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, I think that I should be a freshman student ambassador because I know what it is like to come to a new school and not know the first thing about high school. As an ambassador, I would be sure to point out where to go and how to get there. Also, I would try to help them understand what each teacher expects of students and some helpful and easy suggestions on how stay on task and on schedule. Lastly, what I found comforting when I shadowed here at St. Joseph’s, was how accepting and friendly the person I shadowed was. Throughout UCR, I could see the university is composed of a variety of students and organizations that encompass many identities and interests. However, there are many organizations that target a specific type of people, which could limit how diverse a club could be. Unlike other clubs, Honors breaks the boundaries between different identities and brings together a myriad of students of differing backgrounds who aim to excel in school. If I were to immerse myself into that environment, I would learn and understand more about the range of people in our community. Being a Grade 12 student, I was in a lot of stress because I had to take care of both academic schoolworks and apply to schools. Thus, I decided to focus on several clubs that are very meaningful for me. Firstly, I continued to participate in Z club. Beginning when I was a kid, I was the loudest voice in the room and an ever standing presence, but not until recently did I begin to channel those traits into a more positive state of being.
