Struggles of Minority Groups
On July 4, 1776 The Declaration of Independence was issued, it stated “we hold these truths to be self_evident: That all men are created equal...” But our new nation still participated In the practice of slavery - of african-americans. until the conclusion of the Civil War in the 1860s, after their was much work to make the rights and privileges of citizens. Then America was welcoming immigrants from the World, problems of racial segregation for multiple minority groups. Women and people with disabilities, also fought for fairness and to be equal. Minority groups in America faced discrimination, and racism. And had to stand up in order to be treated equal. How have minority groups such as immigrants, women, and African-Americans had to fight to become full citizens? And what was major points in this journey?
January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln. Which made the slaves in states fighting the Civil War free, but after the War, slavery was abolished. This led to slaves fighting in the war, fighting for ones very own freedom. Slavery in the United States thanks to the Thirteenth Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment (1868) made past slaves, citizens, they would have equal protection of the law. making them equals, staying true to the laws. In 1896 the Supreme Court stated that governments could discriminate/segregate people of different races, but the separate facilities had to be equal. In response to this loop holes were made, like Poll Taxes in the 1890s African-Americans were restrained from their right to vote with taxes. Saying taxes had to be paid first, before allowed to vote, and tests were given to voters. voters who could be failed based on skin. these were ...

... for human rights. he was one of the most influential African-Americans. After the assassinations of two very influential men, it showed they was getting somewhere.
To be American, and to live in America, what comes with it? I can pick the job i want, have a good education, I can vote, And it means most of all to be free and proud. Many people wanted to achieve this like Martin Luther King, Jr. but the road was tough, and laws did not make citizens truly follow them. a lot of people gave up their own likely hood to achieve this for everyone. All these groups had demonstrations to show their opinions, to gain equal rights in America. With African Americans, Women, and Mexican Americans furthered to be represented with the poor, slowly won more political positions; took effective stances of anti-discrimination legislation, to gain a better respect of their culture.
