Making the impossible possible
Making the impossible possible is worth reading because it it shows how Strickland became very successful along with some of his students. And how it gives people motivation to do things they never thought they could do ever in there life, while showing you how to do positive things with your time instead of doing nothing.
As Strickland talks about his journey he talks about pottery and how it got him interested in wanting to make things with clay. So he had the idea of having art classes and letting the kids use clay to help motivate themselves.” All I knew was caly and what it had done for me. Intuitively, i knew it could do the same for them(Strickland 7). The motivation that he gave the children made them believe that they could do anything they put their minds to. Sharif Bey was one of Stricklands students many of the teachers thought he wasn't going to be anything since he kept to himself. But when he was given clay he started to make things and sooner down the line he became a director of arts education.

The book also talks about doing something positive with your life many people just sit around and don’t do anything to pass their time instead of wasting it.” We can start living in the moment.
No step is to small. Pick up some trash. Check on a elderly neighbor. Volunteer at your school or a homeless shelter( Strickland 226). This gives people the opportunity to do something with your time instead of not doing anything. This way students can’t get into trouble and having them feel good about being able to do something in there community. He also mentions that the students should commit themselves in something they are passionate about that moves them every time they do it. People who read this book could relate to this if they have a passion or if they do something that that in their everyday
life. Strickland always talked about being successful when it comes to different events that happened throughout his journey,or if it was one of his students that had success in something they did and achieved on their own. He meets a man named Norman Lear who tells Strickland about his story and what he saw in the program he created.” He wasn’t doing charity; he was telling his story, and he recognized me as someone who could help be apart of that story” (Strickland 214). Every time he accomplishes something weather it was meeting someone new or expanding his company in different ways, he always thought it was success which made him wanting his students to find success. However many people don’t like the book because many can’t relate to what Strickland is trying to say. Many people don't know what it's like to be those children that don't have the motivation to do anything, or understand what it's like to live in poverty. They also don't like how it talks about race and how he thinks that art can save children's lives. But it talks about motivating children into doing things instead of getting into trouble, and gives them the opportunity to try new things in there lives. In conclusion Stricklands book shows us how he has changed the lives of many students, and that you can do anything you put your mind to as long as you believe in yourself. And have the motivation or something you are passionate about to help you get to where you want to be.
This book was a good read for me, but I also read book reviews to help me keep track on what I am reading. These book reviews just made a better understanding of what I was reading.
I have only read four books my entire life for school, but this is one is the best I have read. There were numerous things that I learned from the book. The one that hit me the hardest was it's hard to see people living in shame because they can cover it up really well, almost like it doesn’t bother them at all. I grew up in a middle class family and simply didn't understand what it meant to be so broke that you are ashamed to be around people who have money. The thought never crossed my mind, ever.
After reading this book I think the difference it makes in life is too continuing go for greatness. No matter how bad it may seem right now in life Wes Moore proved that you can still become something great in life. A quote I took from this book was “Failing doesn't make us a failure. But not trying to do better, to be better, does make us fools.” (Moore) I know people who have given up on a lot of things in life because of bumps in the road. I would say this book changes how I look at the lives of others, but in two different ways. One way would be that be can change their life arounds even if they grew up that way. The second would be that sometimes you need to break off from people that might not help you grow in
His pieces inspire in a way. They give you that thought of anything is possible, and you don't have to be normal to make clay. I have learned that there are many different wheel methods you can use. Such as folding the clay or distorting it in some way other then it is supposed to turn out. I learned that flaws in an artists work might not be flaws. I have noticed that in a art when something is different or unique from other artists work than they are noticed more and are much popular. In the future I will definitely be influenced to put more creativity into my work. It will make me think a lot more of how I can make my artwork and clay pieces different than others, and maybe unique isn't such a bad thing. Changing something up a little bit every once in a while isn't that bad. My perception of ceramic art has changed over the course of this year. Just making clay yourself will make you appreciate another's piece a lot more. Especially if clay pieces are basically perfect you will have a lot of respect for the artist of that clay. Learning about clay artists and the work did is just mind opening to what is possible. My perception has changed in a way that I will always judge a piece by its uniqueness and its ability to astound or make me question it. I'm very glad that when I spotted George Ohr I picked him. What I was very interested in this research was the fact that everyone thought he was
Reading this book has gave me even more motivation to complete all of my goals in life. Bill Strickland never gave up on his dream and never let anything come in his way and stop him from completing his dream. No matter how hard is life was or if he had any obstacles in his way he still managed to be very successful in life. Bill has gone through some hard times while he was living in the ghetto at a young age, but after all the chaos he has dealt with he has become a very successful man and helped the lives of
I would recommend this book to others since it was an emotionally drawing novel. It allows people to evaluate their own lives and actually cherish all the aspects of it because a “tragedy” like this can truly happen to anyone. This book is especially interesting once someone has had an introduction to psychology since they can understand Sally's condition in depth, however the book could be enjoyable to anyone. I would also recommend this book to others because of the fact that it is non fiction and to be more empathetic to people's struggles.
...e preceding reasons, all college students should read the book. The book will captivate the educated mind, and most importantly, will cause that mind to think and to question why things happen as they do.
... Reestablishing community goals and encouraging youths to engage in extracurricular activities will greatly improve outlooks on life and help them make the right choices for a better tomorrow.
At the start of the semester each year, students of all ages are asked the same questions. What kinds of classes are you enrolled in? I am in five AP classes. And? I am also playing varsity volleyball. And? I go to music lessons every Wednesday and Saturday for violin. Well, how about community service? There must come a point when society needs to step back and really focus on the damage that words have on the young mind, and on the fact that children are simply incapable of juggling all of these demands, both physically and mentally. Instead of expecting so much out of a child when they are already involved with plenty of (and in most cases, too many) activities, it should cross the mind to offer
I would recommend this book to all the public, because it is a really easy book to read (the easy version we read) and to understand. I think that juniors (next year seniors) should read only the easy version; I think the normal version can confused you very easily. To be honest I’m not into reading, but I can say that this was one of the best books I had ever read.
During the [Project Wisdom] program, my principal tells us a quote then he goes on to explain it. For example, he would say, "Danny Thomas once said, 'Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others." This quote hit me like a thunderbolt. I was constantly thinking about it. Then I saw homeless people while I was walking home from school. I thought of nothing but the quote, so as I got closer to the homeless people, I pulled out my wallet and gave them a ten dollar bill. The feeling I got when the homeless people looked at me is indescribable. After this experience, almost every time someone is in need of something, I give or at least try to give them what they need because of the self-content it brings me. The "Words of Wisdom" program made a difference in my life by helping me discover that it feels good to serve others.
... cross my mind but I find myself thinking differently since enrolling in this class. I enjoyed this book because it allowed me to relate to the main character, reflect on my life, and try to change myself in the process of reading it. I was able to see the parts of my life that had not been even fathomed before. When reading the book I found it difficult to read and somewhat boring but once I thought about the concepts and people involved in our class it gave me a better understanding of the book. One piece of advice would be to have the five people/ five concepts before reading these books because I feel I missed some key points looking back on the book. I feel that knowing these people/concepts before reading the book would have helped me understand the book better. This book was and interesting one and allows for every reader to have their own interpretation of it.
I learned a lot about myself from this book. I realized that I already incorporate a number of the principles that Carnegie preaches. I also picked up some valuable information that I know I will be able to use in the future. I feel that this book is a great learning tool and helps to cover things that students don’t necessarily learn in the classroom. In fact, I have already recommended it to a number of my friends.
Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.
Chapter 9: Thinking, Language and Intelligence was very interesting to me. It goes over the basics that make humans, human. How we communicate with others, solving our problems in life, creating controversy over our opinions, teaching others our mistakes and finding that people can be more than you find them to be.
