I was pleased with the overall performance of my individual speech. Obviously, there are going to be some things that you dislike and some things that you like in every speech that you deliver. I had several goals going into this speech, and although I did not accomplish them all, I accomplished some of the goals that I did not think I would be able to. Within this essay, I will be explaining three of my strengths as well as three of my weaknesses that I observed while delivering my speech. I will then further explain how I plan to even further my strengths, and how I plan to work on my weaknesses for the upcoming group presentation. I will start off by describing some of my public speaking strengths that I noticed. To my surprise, one of my biggest strengths was making eye contact instead of reading off of the slides. In previous experiences, I have had a tendency to read straight from slides instead of speaking to the audience. I am a firm believer that a moving speaker grabs and holds the attention of an audience more than a stationary one. In addition to that weakness, I also noted that I would tend to repeat myself, especially in situations in which I did not know how to end my thought. I could tell that this could have been very confusing to the audience, because they were hearing some facts over and over again for no apparent reason. What I believe to be my greatest weakness of all when it comes to public speaking is my use of filler words. I sometimes have trouble when trying to piece together a thought in my head, and I naturally will use filler words such as “um” or “uh”. Although these are weaknesses, there is always a way to fic them and I will tell you now on how I plan on doing just that in time for my group

One of my greatest strengths pertaining to education is my ability to complete my work in a timely matter. I only turned in late work at least two times in my high school career. Upon reviewing my speech, I can understand where I need to improve my speaking skills, as well as places where I just need to fine-tune them. I chose to talk about skiing because it is an activity that I look forward to every winter, and knowing I had a trip out west over break I knew I would be able to talk about this topic easily. Although I do think that I gave an effective speech, I think there were many things to learn from the overall content, organization, and delivery of the speech. Baseline Skills: I am still a bit timid when it comes to my verbal skills, but throughout my life, these skills have been slowly developing. Verbal communication is the most common form of communication. Verbal communication is used everyday, whether it is ordering a coffee in the morning, lunch at a restaurant, or telling the store clerk what size dress I need. Ever since I was a baby, I was taught to verbally communicate. It is one of the major stepping-stones in a person’s life. Through education, I have had to strengthen my skills for interviews and speeches. Another strength that I have is being an active listener. I listened to my clients and utilized a lot of micro skills. Insuring confidentiality was also a strength that I developed closer to the end of field placement. Conducting assessments and making sure I tracked and exhausted the topics was also a strength that I identified throughout field. Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.
The influential power behind words is often forgotten or misused, but when put together in a harmonious way one’s words have the power to change the world. Anywhere from ancient Roman times to modern day America, public speaking has been an art form many have mastered and used for persuasive purposes. The most successful and effective of speeches often times have clear indications of the speaker’s motivation, approach, and purpose. These themes are very blatantly portrayed in William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, as well as the famous speech of the great Martin Luther King Jr.
My flexibility is certainly one of my greatest strengths. I can easily move between different working styles, depending on the scenario. I have no problem trying a new idea or concept out before deciding on a final direction. I am continually exploring different options. Being a “people-person” is one of my other strengths. My excellent interpersonal skills allow for me to bring ideas, thoughts and people together. I generate enthusiasm and excitement into tasks. I feel comfortable and confident talking to others about anything that I have knowledge of.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. Whether it’s a simple in-class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and stress. In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
Through evaluating my classmates. I have been able to improve on my speaking skills. Evaluating others enabled me point out common mistakes made during public speaking and through teaching them on how to avoid such mistakes has made me learn how to avoid them too. On similar lines, evaluating others has enabled me add to the existing body of knowledge new vocabularies which is very important to my public speaking skills.
