The Strengths of this Semester Out Weigh the Weaknesses
This semester in English 102, the curriculum requires students to adapt their writing to the college level. This level of writing is necessary to create a backbone for students as they progress and grow their writing skills in higher level classes. The course’s primary focus throughout the semester was the adapting of rhetoric strategies into papers as well as writing a comparison, a position paper, critical analysis, and finally a visual argument paper. These papers -though all very different in style- help establish the basic guidelines of writing papers for not only this class but for future English and other classes. Even though I am a Management Information Systems major and writing is not a part of the curriculum, being able to write clear and coherent pieces are necessary for a developing a strong writing style whether it be for resumes or professional works. As the researcher for the visual argument project, it was necessary to find information not only for the visual but the paper as well. At the beginning of the class, I would use Google as the search engine and found news articles as my sources. I made sure the quotes used in papers were specifically from the candidates’ websites when discussing their ideas and points of views. For example, in my report entitled “The Mental Wall Against Trump- What Americans Don’t Realize is Best for America” I found appropriate sources that explicitly stated Donald Trump’s reasoning for a particular plan, “A nation that does not serve its citizens is not a nation. Any immigration plan must improve jobs, wages and security for all Americans.” (2). Throughout the visual project, I used many library databases provided by Alabama’s library. As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
In his argument about amnesty, Nathan Thornburgh makes a very good case. He presents real world examples, doesn’t focus on the policy of the issue, and brings it to a human level. His emotional and factual appeals make it a very good read, and very intelligent argument. His writing style makes it easy for any audience to pick up the meaning he his conveying. If your argument is not able to be read by a multitude of audiences, you will not reach the maximum amount of people you can.
Recently, I have been writing quite a few essays and papers throughout my college experience. This entails, but not limited to, English, History, and Economics. My style of writing and methods have generally remained the same throughout the process. In this assignment, I will be discussing how I prepare to start a paper, what my thoughts are through the process, and my strengths and weaknesses of what my final drafts look like.
With the continual increase of news programs, Americans today are often bombarded with all sorts of pressing issues in today's society- but, how do you decide where to get information about issues such as immigration? In today's major media installments, the attention brought to recent immigration analysis is often subjugated by a clear agenda. Many television reports often bring forth a very condensed form of news programming, which often persuades the American public in a certain direction. Also, news anchors and analysts often add personal bias and subjectivity to the news. On the contrary, recent internet technologies and lower computer costs have allowed many Americans to get their information from an ever-growing news source- the web.
The effectiveness of a grand argument is supported and backed by effective ways of analyzing the intricate parts of an arguments allowing, some debaters, to dissect and argument and subject to provide their position on the matter. This is compiled in the Toulmin Method, a way of doing detailed analysis to argue effectively. An example of the use of The Toulmin Method is in the article, “Raise Wages, Not Wall” written by Michael S. Dukakis and Daniel J. B. Mitchell. In this article, the argument is whether to inhibit immigration from Mexico by building a physical barrier or to raise the wages so actual American citizens are more influenced to do the jobs that immigrants tend to possess to decrease the amount of opportunities for illegal immigrants
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Throughout the week I’ve found numerous sources on the subject of immigration: such as scholarly journals, a few articles from popular news/newsmagazines, three websites that provided good background information, and an opposing viewpoint page through the database. The research helped me gain a ton of information on the topic and how to better understand what’s happening today. I also understand that immigration affects everyone differently, we all have different opinions on the subject. Most of these sources talked about the negativity revolving around immigration and the different reasons why its driving a wedge between the people on the United States. Ultimately I understand why some people are bothered with “immigrants” immigrating into the US but I also primarily understand why others agree with letting them in, because this is the land of the free; and everyone deserves a chance to have a great
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I tied my photos and captions to work together with a good layout and analytical perspective. My argument is not being made very clearly. It is more about how nice the museum looks not what the space is arguing and what my actual argument at the top is making. I need to push my argument more and support it with information that is relevant to the claim. My flyer is more about the space than the fact that the “art museum enriches students’ lives by contributing to the education of all university students by helping them become knowledgeable of cultural diversity.” If someone looked at my flyer they would think I am making the general argument that people should go to the art museum because of the different art and activities it has, not because
Whereas the research proposal and annotated bibliography had specific requirements, the persuasive essay relied on my ability to properly research my issue and compile an argument that provided the reader with enough background information and also my views on the issue. It was much easier writing about what issue I wanted to dedicate my paper to and the sources that would be helpful than trying to convince readers why certain clauses within the law should be removed and address different religious beliefs. My learning experience from this assignment is addressed in the above paragraph. I used this experience when constructing this essay by answering each individual question in its own paragraph and then stepping back to look at the connection between my different answers.
