A wise person once said, “Being strong doesn’t mean you’ll never get hurt. It means even when you get hurt, you’ll never let it defeat you.” This quote relates to the short story “Fly Away Home,” by Eve Bunting. In this story, a young boy named Andrew lives in an airport with his father, while living there Andrew shows us that it is important to stay strong through tough times. In the beginning of the story, being strong through tough times comes up a lot. In one instance in the story, Andrew couldn’t talk with the people he knew at the airport because they could get him noticed. For example, Andrew only had one parent to look up to since his mom passed away. This shows that Andrew is tough because he had to watch kids walking around the airport laughing, talking, and having a good time with both of their parents while he only had his dad. Secondly, Andrew had strength when he carried luggage for people at the airport, even when he got turned down. Andrew had tons of strength through this time because he had to accept the fact that he might not get money for everything even when it was going to be used towards something good. For many of us, this would be extremely hard to deal with if we got turned down for this kind of stuff. I know personally that every time I get turned down my heart skips a beat. To me, and probably Andrew too, being turned down is really hard to deal with. Most likely, Andrew was denied many more times in one day than we are in a week. Another example to show that staying strong through tough times is important, is when Andrew’s dad was looking for apartments, and Andrew knew his dad would never afford it. According to the story Andrew asks, “Will we ever have our own apartment again?” Because Andrew asks this, His dad looks through newspapers to see if there are any homes available for them. To begin with, Andrew was strong even when he thought he and his father would live in the airport for forever. Strength is illustrated here because it’s really challenging to keep going during those times when you have lived in a airport for a majority of your life. If you lived in an airport for five years, and didn’t find a home in that time length, how much hope would you have about the future? Probably not any. But Andrew still had hope even when half of his childhood life was spent sneaking through airport terminals avoiding authorities. Also, as Eve Bunting states in “Fly Away Home,” Andrew has a hard time hearing people say, “It’s so good to be home.” This takes a lot of strength because it must have been really tempting to go to those people and ask why homes were given to them but not to Andrews family. But Andrew stayed tough and didn’t do that because he still had some faith in him that believed in a good future. More importantly, Andrew stayed tough when he thought of the brown bird that was stuck in the door. Andrew had to cope with a lot of hurt and sadness throughout his childhood, but when Andrew thought of this brown bird, he remembered that it wasn’t trapped forever. Eventually, a door opened and the bird went home. This is what kept Andrew going because he believed that like the bird, a door would open and Andrew would find a new place to call home. For example, say a person was just laid off from a job. Sure it will be tough to not have a steady income stream and tough to not be working alongside the friends you have made, but that person has to be resilient and persevere through the tough time and head back out on the job hunt. Almost anywhere would be looking to hire someone if you search deep enough. For another example, let’s say someone very close to you in your family has passed away. It will be a very tough mourning period, but everyone in the family has to be there for each other and be resilient, not letting the sadness take over. Everyone has a different viewpoint on what it is like to go through a hardship in your life. Some people view struggles in life as a strength and that they build character. Others view struggles as a sign of defeat and that they should just give up. For example, the hardest thing that a middle class, 17 year old girl might have had to endure in her life so far is a heart-wrenching breakup with her first boyfriend of three months. While a lower class, 17 year old girl has had to take over the role of mother in her house with 4 young siblings, no father, and a mother who is at work all day, barely breaking even at the end of the month. The narrator watches helplessly as the bird tries to escape wondering “how did it get into this terrible place?” (520). As the narrator watches the bird, he slowly begins to turn into the bird himself. All of the paralleled imagery comes together when he physically turns into a bird. The narrator and the bird are in the exact same situation and the narrator has slowly begun to view his own situation through the bird’s eyes. In an airport there are so many factors that travelers have zero control over. In the narrator’s case, he is trapped in the airport because his flight has been delayed over and over. The bird is trapped because it flew in somehow and cannot seem to find it’s way out. The narrator, frustrated with the other people in the airport for not paying attention to the bird or his similar problem screams, “Help me! I want to go home! I don’t belong here!” (520), but no one will help because they either don’t have control either, or they do not care. He helplessly awaits his plane to come, just like the bird helplessly waits for a person to come and save it. All of the imagery about the airport at the beginning comes back to the narrator’s panic attack. He screams for help as loud as he can but no one listens. He becomes just one person among the large crowd of people in the airport. Everybody has his or her own things to do and places to be. Mental toughness is the ability that one has to keep themselves motivated without losing confidence. Elie had a lot of mental strength. He lost his mother and two sisters which didn’t make him cry. Neither did that stop him from fighting for himself. Elie was with his father most of his time at the concentration camps. His father was weak and close to dying. Elie did not let that get to him either. When Elies father died: Elie didn’t break down and lose himself. He felt rather free: "I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I had no more tears. And, in the depths of my being, in the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I have searched it, I might perhaps have found something like- free at last" (Wiese 106.) Elie was really strong to keep his feelings aside. He knew crying won’t let him win the race in survival. As for losing his father, that just gave him more strength because it was a burden off his shoulders. In order to survive, they had to keep themselves going emotionally. Radasky also had mental toughness. In the introduction of his interview he mentions: “No! You have to fight for yourself day by day. Some people did not care. They said, "I do not want to live. What is the difference? I don 't give a damn." I was thinking day by day. I want to live. A person has to hold on to his own will, hold on to that to the last minute” (Radasky 1) these words of wisdom
First, in the book Game Changers, the main character Ben faces adversity. Ben is a short little league baseball player who gets hit by a blazing-fast fastball. Since this has been first time ever being hit by a ball, he is now scared of every pitcher he faces. Ben has overcome adversity by “deciding to man-up and not be scared of the baseball”. The next time Ben overcomes adversity is when he is in a massive hitting slump (which means he’s not getting base hits in baseball). Ben shows “perseverance by not giving up like many kids would”. Ben eventually battles his way out of the slump. This is just another example of overcoming adversity.
Statement: The ability for an individual to endure hardship is a testament to the endurance of human spirt. The ability to defeat hardship isn 't something everyone has but I assume that having that ability is something that should be an essential human quality.
When my dad’s father died he lost interest in everything he loved and everything he wanted to be in life. Buck can relate to this at the point in the story where everything went wrong in his life and he had no reason to stay positive but he still managed to do it and get through. In the beginning of the story when Buck got sold he had to adapt to the new life and get by with what he had in that time. This relates to my dad’s struggles since he grew up in poverty and he had to change his life due to the things he didn’t have, but he should have had if he had a stable household. Remaining calm when things get tough can be hard on some people, but somehow my dad and Buck both did it when things got
Being smart is a trait that you need in life and in Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting, Andrew has a lot of that trait.One reason to support this claim is he does not get caught while he lives in the airport. Another reason is Andrew saves money.A final reason is they all work together in the airport to get money and not get caught.

A quote by Karen Salmansohn reads, “Strength grows in the moments when you think you can’t go on but you keep going anyway.” Many of us have faced some really tough times on the rollercoaster of life. I can safely say that I am not the only one that has felt like some days the world is just out to get me. In those days of struggle, we always find a way to get through to the next day and make it better than the last. This process is different for everyone because everyone develops and uses their strength in many different ways, but we all eventually find that better day, through strength. Oxford Dictionaries defines one meaning of strength as “the emotional or mental qualities necessary in dealing with difficult or distressing situations.” The word strength has a very abstract meaning and comes in different forms like physical and mental or spiritual strength, so my goal is to define strength by using examples of strength. Strength is the ability to resist being moved or broken by a force or the quality that allows someone to deal with problems in a determined and effective way.
