The Dangers of Street Racing
Hollywood has a tendency to glorify negative things that can only be safely done on the big screen. The use of drugs, heavy partying, and other outrageous lifestyle choices that do not play out well in real life. The movie franchise Fast and Furious has done a fantastic job at doing that with illegal street racing. The films provide unrealistic expectations that make controlling a car at such high speeds look simple. People then get the idea to give it a try and it does not end how they imagined. Speed creates more of an impact on the body in car accidents, and can cause damage to a person. Speeding in an accident can make a vehicle spin out of control, flip, and even catch fire. Over thirteen thousand people die because of high speed accidents annually. (National Safety Council) Not all of the fatal crashes are a result from illegal street racing, but also from drivers under the influence and safe drivers who are only speeding slightly. ABC News suggests “No national numbers or statistics exist on the occurrence of street drag racing, but nearly 100 people die annually in California alone, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.” One source from CBC News says that one Canadian dies each week from street racing due to the high street race occurrence …show more content…

Money, reputation, and other things are going on, and not just anyone gets involved in the activity. The typical age for someone to be involved in illegal racing is sixteen to twenty one years old according to multiple sources including ABC News and popcenter.org. Most of the time gangs are associated with the illegal hobby. Gangs are illegal themselves and often bring trouble with them. In order to get the car in race ready condition, these gangs may steal or traffic parts, and commit automobile theft, according to the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing. Even if a person who is racing is not a member of a gang, they will more than likely still encounter gang violence or harassment if bets are not paid up.
