Introduction DNA is the molecule that is responsible for the storing and replicating of genetic material for an organism. The genetic material is the thing that gives an organism its identity. DNA is in the shape of a double helix. It consists of a phosphate group, deoxyribose, and a nitrogenous base. The phosphate groups are synthesised together to create an ester. The connected phosphate groups create a backbone that has a negative charge, is hydrophilic, and are antiparallel. Hydrophilic means that the DNA is able to be easily dissolved in the water because the water is polar and is very attracted to the DNA molecules. Fruits contain an enzyme called pectinase that helps to break down the cell wall of a cell. This allows for the DNA of the plant cell to be more easily extracted from the cell using an extraction buffer. The extraction buffer consists of soap, water, and salt. This is due to the fact that the raspberries that were used may have been diploids, but the raspberries could also be tetradecaploid which would have a lot more DNA than the strawberries. Using the knowledge of the properties of DNA, this is what helps to explain why the DNA was able to be extracted. The buffer included polar molecule that were attracted to the DNA causing it to be dissolved from the cell. An anomaly that occurred was that a lot of DNA was present in the test tube of the strawberries, but when they were spooled out, there was not much DNA at all. This may have been because the DNA was too dissolved in the alcohol so it was unable to stay in its solid form long enough to be place on the paper. In our Biology Lab we did a laboratory experiment on fermentation, alcohol fermentation to be exact. Alcohol fermentation is a type of fermentation that produces the alcohol ethanol and CO2. In the experiment we estimated the rate of alcohol fermentation by measuring the rate of CO2 production. Both glycolysis and fermentation consist of a series of chemical reactions, each of which is catalyzed by a specific enzyme. Two of the tables substituted some of the solution glucose for two different types of solutions. They are as followed, Table #5 substituted glucose for sucrose and Table #6 substituted the glucose for pH4. The equation for alcohol fermentation consists of 6 Carbons 12 Hydrogens 6 Oxygen to produce 2 pyruvates plus 2 ATP then finally the final reaction will be 2 CO2 plus Ethanol. Simply put, DNA contains the instructions needed for an organism to develop, survive and reproduce. The discovery and use of DNA has seen many changes and made great progress over many years. James Watson was a pioneer molecular biologist who is credited, along with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, with discovering the double helix structure of the DNA molecule. The three won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962 for their work (Bagley, 2013). Scientist use the term “double helix” to describe DNA’s winding, two-stranded chemical structure. Firstly, an amount of 40.90 g of NaCl was weighed using electronic balance (Adventurer™, Ohaus) and later was placed in a 500 ml beaker. Then, 6.05 g of Tris base, followed by 10.00 g of CTAB and 3.70 g of EDTA were added into the beaker. After that, 400 ml of sterilized distilled water, sdH2O was poured into the beaker to dissolve the substances. Then, the solution was stirred using the magnetic stirrer until the solution become crystal clear for about 3 hours on a hotplate stirrer (Lab Tech® LMS-1003). After the solution become clear, it was cool down to room temperature. Later, the solution was poured into 500 ml sterilized bottle. The bottle then was fully wrapped with aluminium foil to avoid from light. Next, 1 mL of 2-mercaptoethanol-β-mercapto was added into fully covered bottle. Lastly, the volume of the solution in the bottle was added with sdH2O until it reaches 500 ml. The bottle was labelled accordingly and was stored on chemical working bench.
