I watch the movie Straight Outta Compton in the comfort of my home on Netflix. Its based on a true story about a group of friends trying to become rappers. I will review the camera work, the acting and the storyline. First you feel like your moving with the camera. In the movie “Boyz in the Hood” director John Singleton, paints a clear image of the problems that happen very often in the African American communities. The movie deals with issues such as: the importance of a father in a young man’s life, the ongoing violence of black on black crime, and how black people are put in situations where they are put to fail and not succeed in life.

This movie is based on changing the lives of Mexican Americans by making a stand and challenging the authority. Even when the cops were against them the whole time and even with the brutal beatings they received within one of the walk out, they held on. They stuck to their guns and they proved their point. The main character was threatened by the school administrators, she was told if she went through with the walkout she would be expelled. The sound design and choreography intensified the overall musical. They created the time, place, and mood through rhythm and great energy. The actors had wireless, behind the ear mikes, that attached to the mike pack which amplified the sound, making it very clear. I could easily understand what they were talking about or singing.
Even though there is a great amount of audience participation, one really has to turn your attention to the actors in the movie. It takes a special kind of person to really understand the movie they are in.

Lastly, the cast used very few props. They used a ladder, basketballs, chairs and desks. The cast also had cell phones. Whenever they would have a scene where a prop was needed that they didn’t have they would just pretend the object they needed was there. For example one of the characters pretended to take a bite out of an apple and another pretended to be going down stairs. It was hard to really enjoy this production when they were lacking this

It seems it is unusual for a woman to enjoy this type of movie as the violence is extreme; however, when that violence is based on true events and is essential to the growth of the character it becomes easier to accept. The fighting portrayed in this movie falls into that category; it is something that young people often become involved in to demonstrate their power and it can only be hoped that they learn early enough that there is a better way to stand your ground and prove your worth.
