Hard Drives and External Hard Drives
The purpose of a storage device is so the computer has a place to record and/or retrieve items to and from storage media (Shelly and Vermaat). There are many different ways to store and retrieve information two of them being a hard drive and an external drive. Both serve the similar purpose however, they are used for different reason or what some like to call, “their backup”.
A hard drive or otherwise known as a hard disk is a storage device that contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions, and information. The system unit on most personal computers contains a least one hard disk, sometimes called an internal hard disk because it is not portable (Shelly and Vermaat). In other words a hard drive is the location in a computer where all the computer programs and files are stored. The hard drives are classified as random access, digital, magnetic, and data storage devices.
According to Wikipedia how a magnetic disk works is by using a spindle motor in the drive rotates the magnetic medium at a certain speed, while a stepper motor-operated mechanism moves the magnetic read/write head(s) along the surface of the disk (Hard disk drive). To write data, current is sent through a coil in the head as the media rotates (Hard disk drive). The head's magnetic field aligns the magnetic particles directly below the head on the media (Hard disk drive). When the current is reversed the particles align in the opposite direction encoding the data digitally (Hard disk drive). The solid state drive is a very unique piece of technology that was created in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. It is a storage device that incorporates solid-state memory and emulates a hard disk drive to store data. Solid state drives use interfaces such as USB and PCI express. It is very light, quiet and uses very little power to function, thus making it a very important piece in a modern day computer. As time goes by, there are more and more solid state drives that are found in laptops and even mobile devices as they are relativity smaller than hard disk drives and are much faster. Also if you accidently drop your laptop or mobile device from a decent height (five feet) while it’s processing, then you will greater chances of retrieving your data than a hard disk drive. But there are indeed some downsides to the solid state drive, not many but one that makes it hard to come by, the cost. A storage device is the system where your computer stores and retrieves your data. Storage devices can be a hard disk drive, DVD, CD drives, Blu-Ray drives or flash drives. A computer can retrieve the data by being “commanded” to retrieve it from the storage area and retrieve it to your RAM. The RAM of the computer is your temporary memory where your data is inputted, and then processed and stored onto a storage device for permanent placement.
The “head”, or device used to transmit data onto the magnetic disks, is an important part of the hard disk and composes most of the physics happenings. Current is passed through the head or in the physic’s case, the conductor, to produce a magnetic field around the conductor. This magnetic field then can influence the disk’s magnetic material. The head is driven by an electric motor, using electromagnetism, to exert pushing and pulling forces on magnets to the rotating shaft. In some cases the head moves to a required area on the disk, and the motion of the magnetized surface induces tiny voltage. This voltage is concentrated in the coil of the read head, and can be interpreted as the data stored on the magnetic disk. When the direction of the flow of electric current is reversed, the magnetic field’s polarity is reversed.
