I. Attention Getter: What if everyone stopped recycling? Would this planet we call home be as beautiful and green as it once was or will it have our garbage lying around everywhere? Most of us do not seem concerned with what our world would look like until we see the mess we created. You as a person won’t see the difference if we stopped recycling today, but generations to come will. Recycling is an easy way to save our environment.

Recycling is something that most Americans wish to ignore causing them to not put in their share in recycling. Due to the rapid closing of landfills which damages the environment, recycling has become necessary. Elizabeth Segarra wrote an article for Truthout where she stated, “americans are responsible for sending an astonishing amount of waste to landfills -- and it's only gotten worse over the last 100 years.” She also stated that there has been a dramatic increase of landfills over the last century to accommodate all the extra trash being produced (Segarra, 2016). Landfills can cause serious air and water pollution. Also, decomposition of waste in landfills release methane which can increase the spread of diseases.
2. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “the average person generates over four pounds of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year” (EPA, 2015). But by throwing everything away, rather than being selective about what you can put into your recycling bin and normal bin causes us to have an overflow of landfills.
4. Every year a huge amount of garbage is being thrown away, when it should be recycled. The Environmental Protection Agency estimated that 75% percent of American waste is recyclable (EPA, 2015). However, the United States only recycles 30% of its waste (EPA,
