To elaborate, the death of Hester's father suppresses her and her house of spirit. Consequently, the past confines the house and Hester, erasing the possibility of progression. The symbol of the house is indicative of Hester's stages of life; both were once lively, but the past compels them to deny change and maintain absolute control.
