Speeches throughout history have been a place where propaganda has been seen evidently. The Steve Jobs Speech, “You’ve Got to find what you Love”, posted by Stanford University, shows a different type of propaganda. This speech has an inspirational and innovative touch to it that allows the audience to receive different feelings all throughout the speech. In short, it is a man’s attempt to convince the reader of the difficult topic of followings ones heart.
The speech contains a propaganda technique called “name calling”. This is when the speaker links a person or idea to a negative symbol. This may seem like an odd choice in an inspirational speech, but it messes with the reader’s emotions and that is the main reason for it. The technique is first seen at the beginning of the speech. Steve Jobs explains how he attended a college named Reed College. He then later states, “I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life…I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would be OK.” Dropping out of college is looked at as a bad thing. Steve Jobs wants the listener to see that bad things do happen in life. Sometimes chances have to be taken. If college is not the right direction for your passion, then do not do it. This chance that he took allowed him to start taking classes that he wanted to take, not ones that he was forced to take. He was finally able to dive into classes that pursued his passion. Taking these classes allowed him to become one of the greatest marketing experts of all time. This name calling is a way for the listener to understand this. Bad things happen in life. Since he made this relationship it helps the listener understand that following their h...

...meone else’s life.” The listener then understands the point that he is trying to make. Life is short. You have to live your own life in order to get the fullest out of it. Being on the bandwagon is never going to get you to your passion. Your passion should be what you live for. The statements that Steve Jobs made gave the listener a pristine idea on the truth. That is what makes this speech so influential.
Steve Jobs uses simple examples to point to the listener that doing what you love is more important than anything else. The speech pulls at all different parts of human emotions: sadness, disgust, and even fear. The many different propaganda techniques used are what create these emotions. These techniques were sometimes even twisted for the good of the speech. That all wrapped together creates one of the greatest speeches of all time. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
The third point he made is to build a life, not to live a life. This empowered everyone to take their life in their own hands and make it what they wanted. Kutcher states that, “Everything around us that we call life is made up of people that are no smarter than you.” Overall he encourages everyone to work hard, be smart, and build a
Fear of the unknown can be a very terrifying situation, many people graduate college thinking they are done when in reality they are just getting started with life. In Steven Spielberg’s Commencement speech to the Harvard Graduates, class of 2016. Spielberg exploited the fears and truths in life, what he was faced with and how life turned out for him. In my opinion Steven Spielberg did a really good job of structuring his speech and keeping the audience’s attention, Spielberg’s speech was well written and well delivered. He used some very nice quotes in the speech to inspire the audience. Steven Spielberg’s Speech was effective in persuading the audience, he really showed great use of ethos in his speech because many of the audience could relate. And just like in his movies Spielberg used pathos in his speech when he connected some of his popular movies with the speech in order to appeal to the audience.
But, coming to a conclusion via logic reasoning can be seen in the speech. Carrey uses the logical appeal as he follows the format of an epideictic speech. He first acknowledges the students, faculty members, and parents attending the graduation ceremony. Then, he states the central value of dreaming big and choosing love rather than giving into fear. In order to logical appeal to the audience, he shares different examples to support his claims. One of the most memorable supporting evidence was when Carrey shared personal anecdote about his childhood. He said his father could have been a comedian but chose to be an accountant because he wanted a stable job. Carrey's father later lost his job, which taught Carrey an important lesson. "I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which, was that you can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love," Carrey said. In the context of rhetoric, logos here appeals to an audience’s sense of logic, reason, and rationality. Following the epideictic speech format, he ends the speech by challenging the audience to live by the central value, “after you walk through those doors today, you will only ever have two choices: love or fear. Choose love, and don’t ever let fear turn you against your playful

At the end I would just like to say that Steve Jobs was not a one in a million, billion, or even a trillion kind of a person, rather he was a ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Steve Jobs is trying to say that you should live every day like it is your last. He knew his life had value to him and his family. He felt like life was worth living even though once in a while a hard choice would come along to toughen his life. Making a choice is very hard, but when making a choice it should be one that you will not regret later in life. Making choices is one of the hardest things in life so you must see all the good and all the bad to the outcome of your options. Live everyday like it is your last. Ebert says that life is a very precious thing. Hamlet wants to die, but him not knowing what is on the other side scares so he decides to live. Even though Ebert had to get surgery, he got through it and learned to still live his life with no regrets.
He kept a consistent energy high throughout his whole speech, keeping a hold of his audience. He uses several parallel language throughout his speech, For example, “ ...they must be found, they must be pursued, and they must be defeated.” With the parallel language, he also uses several antithesis throughout his speech. For example, “ If there is a senior citizen somewhere who can’t pay for their prescription drug and having to chose between paying the medicine or the rent, it makes my life poor even if it’s not my grandparent.” When he takes somebody else struggle and care about it, he makes it very memorable because he chose to care even if it does not physically affect him. He was able to make his speech diverse and it is not something that is heard
Today´s society is filled with people that only care about money and a person's profession when it comes to valuing an individual's life. Many people think that having a lot of money, college degrees, and working for a top notch business or company defines who they are, but what about the people who may not be successful in the world's view, but are happy because they are doing what they love to do ? Steve Jobs gave a commencement speech at Stanford University, in 2005, advising the graduates to follow their passions and not to listen to other people's advice about what is valuable or not. He also advised them not to waste their time living someone else’s life. Steve Jobs advocates for individuals to have the bravery to follow your
Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me. - Steve Jobs.
Overall the speech-structure, sense of wisdom, and experience, topped by his widely recognized success, empowers his speech to be strongly convincing. Meanwhile, the fallacies and faith requiring combinations of propositions Jobs’ gives, topped by a bit of contradictory context in the eyes of the audience, deducts from the intensity of his overall persuasion. Given the circumstances, the audience, and the situation, Steve Jobs was able to deliver a notably strong, somewhat inspirational and lifting final word to the Stanford graduates that day on June 12th 2005.
He never really cared to better his life. Instead he was seeking out revenge for the death of his father. On the other hand, Robert Ebert, the author of “Essential man” had a completely different perspective on life when Hamlet was always seeking out for the worst Ebert was looking for positivity in all things possible. “In What is Life Worth” By Amanda Ripley she talks about the monetary value of a dead person had they lived. Lastly in Steve Jobs Commencement speech he explained how life took him in many different directions but his value of life remained the same thought all his hardships.
Throughout the years, there have been many great business leaders and influential CEOs; men and women with great leadership qualities and innovative thinking who have changed their companies. Among the many great leaders, there is one man who is highly recognized and praised for his accomplishments; Steve Jobs. Jobs was an extraordinary man. He left his mark and changed many industries, including; personal computers, music, phone, animation and film, and portable computing. However, Jobs was not always the most liked person, in fact, many of his colleagues complained that he was very tough to work with and many quit their jobs because of this. Jobs had an intense drive and demanded only the absolute best from his employees. But Jobs was a very
I consider Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 to be one of the most effective speeches. He uses mechanics of speech to craft a well-rounded speech that is crowned by his use of rhetorical devices. Jobs gives relevant and fundamental knowledge of his life and experiences with his rhetorical approach. In his speech to the Stanford’s graduation class, he tells different stories of love, loss, discovery and difficulty he faced in his life to encourage new graduates as they continue to mature in life. He encourages students to pursue their dreams and not be discouraged by failures they might experience in life.
In 2005, Steve Jobs’ gave a commencement speech to the University of Stanford. His speech is a very motivational and inspiring to everyone that has listened to it. He talks about three stories that happened in his life and allowed him to be where he is today. Connecting the dots, love and lost, and death. He puts his life events into perspective and allows you to see how everything came together for him. Never giving up on what you believe in and doing what you love every day.
The determination and perseverance was part of Steve personality. He was in love with electronics, so he spent many evenings visiting the garage of Lary Lang the engineer who lived down the street from his house. Then he searched for training companies in the electronics industry and worked in summer in HP Company because he wanted to strengthen his knowledge o...
