The purpose of this paper is to analyze Steve Jobs’s strengths and weaknesses as a leader, as well as his leadership style, philosophy and values. Steve Jobs was one of the most successful entrepreneurs and inventors of all time. He distinguished himself because of his authenticity and creativity, always thinking outside the box.
Background
Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California, to Abdulfattah "John" Jandali and Joanne Schieble, two graduate students from University Wisconsin. Being born out of marriage, the baby was put up for adoption. Jandali was a political science professor and Joanne a speech therapist (all about Steve Jobs, 2013). Shortly after Steve was placed for adoption, his biological parents married and had their second child, Mona Simpson. Jobs was not able to find out information on his biological parents until he was 27, when he had enough money to contract a private investigator.
Paul Reinhold Jobs and Clara Jobs, a middle-class Armenian couple, adopted Steve Jobs at birth. Originally, Joanne and Jandali wanted their son to be adopted by an educated family. Although the Jobs family did not meet the requirements for the agreement of the adoption, Joanne agreed as long as they promised that they would later send him to college. The family moved to the Silicon Valley a few years later, making Steve Jobs grow up in a neighborhood of engineers working on electronics in their garages. Growing up in this environment shaped Steve’s interest in the field. At age 13, he met 18-year-old Stephen Wozniak, an electronics prodigy kid, who eventually became his colleague at Apple.
About five years later, Steve Jobs told his parents he wanted to enroll in Reed College — a very costly lib...

...r, “You need a lot of passion for what you're doing because it’s so hard. Without passion, any rational person would give up.” Steve Jobs, at age 30 was fired from Apple in spite of the fact that he helped start it. He describes the aftermath of that event and though he didn’t realize it right away he stumbled upon the realization that he still loved what he did even after being fired. This realization inspired him to start PIXAR and NEXT. PIXAR is now the most successful animation studio in the world. NEXT was bought by Apple and Steve Jobs was rehired by Apple. So for Steve Jobs the single most important contributing factor to his success was passion for what he did. It was the driving force that helped him focus all his creative genius, enabled him to overcome obstacles and ultimately achieve his vision, that apple's products and services would change the world.
...ties and differences of the leadership of Steve Jobs and Fr. Jose Arizmendiarrieta that the leadership required for organisations to succeed is unique to the goals and definition of success portrayed by the leader. Their leadership styles were reflected in the organisations development and it can be seen why leadership in organisations is of such importance. What is also clear is that there is no right or wrong way to lead – Fr Jose achieved a sustainable profitable cooperative, Jobs archived a highly profitable company. The leadership practice used needs to fit the organisations vision, the needs of the stakeholders, and be ingrained into followers. The followers need to buy in to the leader’s vision and goals and play their part in implementing the steps required for success. The leader is ultimately responsible for guiding the followers along the path to success.
He did not care about employees’ feelings; he only listened to their ideas and organization performance (Inside Apple, n.d). According to Inside Apple (n.d), “Steve was a demanding perfectionist with an aggressive and demanding personality. He demanded excellence from his staff delivered blunt criticisms.” Many people accused Steve as cruel to those work under him (Inside Apple, n.d). According to Inside Apple (n.d), “his personality was an important factor to the success of Apple. He acted as if normal rules didn’t apply to him, the passion, intensity, and emotionalism that he brought to work all poured out into the products he made. All of his imperfections and perfections collaborated to make Apple what it is.” Despite of his cruel personality, Steve jobs motivated his employees to innovate and create new ideas (Inside Apple, n.d). According to Inside Apple (n.d), “Steve Jobs fit in the transactional leadership description. He directed efforts of others through tasks and structures. Steve influenced his employees for strong desire of work, shared his passion with the staff, and provided vision. Steve Jobs was driven by his desire to create great products that he would enjoy using himself rather than products that would just bring profit to Apple.” Steve Jobs was successful in gaining customer loyalty. He created great services to his customers (Shephyken, n.d). According to Shephyken(n.d), “they have created a system,
Next computers experienced relatively limited sales, with estimates of about 50,000 units shipped in total. Obviously, this was not the end of Steve Jobs. He started to regain his position to the business industry by introducing Pixar with animation toy story which was a massive hit. Then he went back to Apple in August of 1997 and sold Next to Apple. Apple also wanted Jobs back since the company was operating at a loss. Hence, the board members decided to bring him back, and he became the CEO of Apple. Then he revolutionized technology by introducing iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, and iPad. In 2005, Steve Jobs’ gave a commencement address to Stanford University which became one of the most famous and inspirational speech all over the world. In that speech, he made a quote and said, “I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.” To put it another way, Jobs believed failing was the only way to do something great, and he proved what he said by redeeming
When comparing my Big Five Personality scores to the class average, I received a score of 6 and the average was 5.7, one score did not come to a surprise. My personality is reliant on my strength of conscientiousness. Individuals who score high in conscientiousness tend to be methodical, well-organized, achievement orientated, and ethically guided. The conscientious personality type has a strong correlation to leader emergence which I can attest is true. I often am the first individual in the group to take reigns because of my organization, self-discipline, and need to create a plan before acting.
All leaders start somewhere in life, whether if it’s in a garage or in the basement working with dad. There is the, one-and-only leader who took innovation through his own ideas. This leader took steps beyond his wildest dreams. This immense leader was demoted from his own company. Many say his ego got in the way of true life and visions, but this leader is the seed to the blueprints of ideas that he had created visions of a leading company. This leader created a legacy; he is the action of a revolutionary breakthrough.
Steve Jobs charisma mostly depends on his knowledge and understanding of the technology he is absorbed. To technology field, Jobs may not compete to his engineers, nevertheless, he, together with Wozniak, has been the founder of Apple, and they also produced the very first hardware together (Isaacson, 2012). From this point of view, his understanding in technological field combined with visionary gift help him develop his vision and deliver it properly to his employees.
Jobs had a talent at recognizing other talent. Steve Jobs wasn't a tech person, he didn't know computers, or coding, he knew exactly how to get people to work together and had a vision that no one else had. He got the most value out of people, which speaks for itself. Just look at 2 companies he built... Apple and Pixar
There were many setbacks for Jobs, but this had never discourage him. Instead, he started a new beginning. There was a marketing and production issue that caused Jobs to leave the company in 1985. He then began a new hardware and software enterprise called NeXT Inc. Later, he invested $50 million in Pixar Studio Animation Studies, which produces numerous award-winning movies. He became the largest shareholder as a result. In 1997, he returned to Apple and became the CEO of Apple again. Jobs faced many obstacles, but he was brave enough to push forward no matter the problem.
Steve Jobs was the utmost CEO of all time. In the speech it states, “……… he’s been called a visionary, a creative genius, a rebel, a non-conformist, an original, the greatest CEO ever, the best innovator of all time.” In the article it states, “He was intensely focused when committed, confident enough to take risky leaps, and charismatic enough to enlist legions of employees and customers in the restless pursuit of his aspirations.” Both texts describe the traits of Steve Jobs which made him the greatest CEO of our age. Steve Jobs was an original genius he had a significant and unique imagination. It’s one thing to envision your own company broadening, but it’s another thing to envision that your company’s services and products will change people lives for the better, the way we communicate and work. Jobs built his company thinking that Apple’s products and services would change the
As Isaacson recalls in his biography on Jobs’ life, the first thing that Jobs did at Apple was cut out the convoluted product lines, instead shifting the focus on “four great products” (3). Already, Jobs’ tendency towards conscientiousness showed in his leadership style. Rather than leading an Apple that produced countless variations of the computer, Jobs saw the importance of efficiency. Just as a conscientious person desires to accomplish a task as well as possible, Jobs’ leadership style forced Apple to commit to making only four computers the best possible products. The next test of Jobs’ leadership style would be the creation of the iPod in 2001, the product that would redefine the music consumption market. Interestingly, Gladwell’s exposé of Steve Job’s leadership process likens Jobs to a “tweaker” rather than an inventor, citing the iPod as one such example (5). Rather than creating a brand new product, Jobs was committed to creating the perfect product for music playback. During Jobs’ time at Apple, he would often refine existing ideas until it fit his vision rather than creating something new. One famous quote attributed to Steve Jobs is “I’ll know it when I see it” (Gladwell 6). By constantly pushing his engineers and designers until they created a product that fit his vision, much to the chagrin of those working for him, Steve Jobs was able to release products that would revolutionize their markets, just as the iPod did. This penchant for perfection stems from Jobs’ tendency towards neuroticism. Although neuroticism is often regarded by many as a negative factor to successful leadership, I argue that neuroticism was key to Jobs’ leadership style. In Jobs’ case, the appearance of neuroticism through a drive for perfection created a leadership style that allowed Jobs to lead his company in creating
We think Steve Jobs was a successful leader because he was imaginative, passionate about his job, he had the ability to push employees to create new things, had confidence, and believed in collaboration. Under Steve Jobs' leadership Apple was an innovative company and under Tim Cook's leadership Apple is now being seen as more of charitable, socially and ethically responsible company. While [he’s heard the repeated refrains that “Apple can’t innovate under Tim,” that the company needed a low-cost iPhone to thwart the progress of Google’s Android, that Cook never could replicate the Jobs magic—and therefore that Apple never again would be “insanely great.” ] (Lashinsky, 2015), he hasn’t changed his methods since Jobs’ passing and continues to lead in a way that he believes will raise Apple’s value in the eyes of society.
Steve Jobs was born on Feburary 24, 1995 in Green Bay Wisconsin. His biological mother put him up for adaptation, because she could not care for him and give him a good child hood. She requested that her son to be placed with a well-educated family. When Steve Jobs was growing up he Didn’t have any friends so he wandered to neighbors garages looking to learn more about electronics because a lot of them were engineers. Steve jobs liked fiddling with electronics so much that he spent his time after school at the packyard electronics company learning more in depth about how to make electronic devices. Steve jobs had a hard time focusing in class. Until his fourth grade teacher found a way to get him to focus in class it was by bribing him to do his work. That worked so well that the school recommended him to skip fifth grade and go straight to junior high. Steve jobs told his parents he did not like the school that he was going to, and wanted to change schools. Steve Jobs and his parents moved to silicon valley where there was a premiere school for electronics and technology. He found a friend when he was in high school that was a geek just like him, that friend was Stephen Woznick. Stephen Woznic...
Although Steve and Bill are competitors, there are similarities between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Both of them are the most successful CEO’s in the world. Though they were college dropouts, but they still achieved a lot of success in their own way. Steve was a very innovative man. As the English proverb goes by “ Have no fear of perfection - you will never reach it.” by Salvador Dali. No matter how many times he failed, he could develop things from his own idea and turn them into a successful product. In 1979 Apple’s first product was introduced, people like it very much because of its simplicity and innovative ideas. Later on in year 1980, the company showed a tremendous performance, where its share rose by 32% (Messa, 1998).
