But for certain individuals, I truly believe, because I've experimented with it for so many years, that it can make an average athlete a super athlete. It can make a super athlete - incredible. Just legendary.” This is a quote from six-time MLB all star, and World Series champion Jose Canseco, in an interview with CBS in 2006. In 2005, Canseco admitted to using steroids during his time in the Major Leagues. So that leaves the question: can something that can be so beneficial to athletic performance be equally harmful to health? Discussion Steroids have been debated and studied since they were first synthesized in the 1940’s by the Soviet Union (Connolly 2001). Scientists in the Soviet Union were looking for a way to gain a competitive edge in the Olympic games. Some athletes were outraged that other athletes were using such means, while others joined in on the doping (taking anabolic steroids) to even the playing field. During the 1960’s, a number of deaths occured in the competitive sports world from the use of stimulants (Savulescu 2013). Taylor Hooten was a seventeen-year old baseball player who hung himself as a result of depression that was brought on by steroids. Lyle Alzado died of brain cancer that is believed to be a result of years of steroid abuse (Roleff 2010). A study by NSW in 2014 examined men in their 20s and 30s who were dying from heart disease. The study examined 24 men who died in the last 17 years and steroids were found in their system. The men showed signs of over developed muscles and testicular scarring from testicular shrinkage.
