Before I can tell you the effects steroids have had in sports you first understand a few post and side effects of steroids. Anabolic steroids or anabolic androgenic steroids are types of synthetic drugs that are designed to act like the effects of the hormone, testosterone. In a few studies, some volunteers reported “aggression or undesirable, explicit behaviors” resulting from the anabolic steroid use.
Testosterone, one of the main ingredients in steroids is a result in the body from cholesterol; testosterone like other hormones has its main effect on tissues. “Testosterone enters a body cell and attaches to a receptor, which goes into the cell nucleus where it activates the synthesis of protein. Protein synthesis leads to tissue repair and growth. If we were able to increase protein synthesis it would lead to quicker regeneration of the body, and to give faster recovery from illness and injuries”.
In a new study, middle-aged weight lifters who took steroids for a decade showed evidence of a heart pumping function that was not seen in weight lifters who did not take steroids. “The finding suggests that many years of anabolic steroid use weakens the heart more than has been previously recognized”, says cardiologist and study researcher Aaron L. Baggish, MD, of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Today’s use of steroids is not just in Major League Baseball, the National Football League or in the Federation de Football Association (FIFA), but also in the Ultimate Fight Competition (UFC) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
