In the video, there was a substitute teacher who was clearly a new face to the students in the class. He laid down the law of his classroom and began to take attendance. When he began, he pronounced the students names quite oddly. It is unknown if the teacher was honestly trying to pronounce their names right or just doing it for the fun of it. The classroom in video case 42 was made up of 12 English language learners. The students were learning U.S. History content vocabulary in small, collaborative, interactive groups. The teacher used visuals – words written on a white board, a graphic organizer of the concept definitions, and a Power Point presentation with pictures and simple definitions. The teacher provided background knowledge through the use of textbooks, so the children could be successful in future history classes. The teacher used songs to assist the auditory learners in the class as well as a video to further assist the visual learners to see the concepts from the lesson in context. All of these resources were culturally appropriate as English language learners often learn best when a lesson is developed through multiple strategies and with a variety of resources.

The students in the film are culturally different, and have various views, opinions, beliefs and needs. Their culture, and home life affect their behavior and attitudes in and out of class. This is true for most students, especially in inner city schools when everyone is diverse, and end up together in one class. In one scene, Rhoumba and Esmeralda did not like that Mr. Marin used “whitey” names such as Bill in his examples. They wanted to hear names that were culturally familiar. This example can teach teachers the importance of making sure their students’ culture is represented somehow in the class. Something as simple as using a specific name in the examples is important to students who are often left out of the curriculum. Another example is when the students expressed what they were ashamed of, and many students said they were ashamed of their culture differences. This is a learning moment for teachers because cultural differences could affect how their students see themselves, and that celebrating and including their culture in the classroom could have an effect on their attitudes and self-esteem. A time that I did something that I thought I couldn't do, was to stick up for others. When I was in sixth grade, during recess, I saw a girl named Melissa crying. I went up to her and asked what was wrong. She said that people were talking about her behind her back, and that she felt awkward around them. I consoled her by letting her know that friends don't talk behind friends backs and that you have other people that you can talk to during recess. It bothered me how Melissa was sad. She felt a little better after we talked and then we played games.

The world of today is a relatively primitive one, even with every advancement that humanity has accomplished we remain primitive in this aspect. There has been progress, even as slow in comparison to that of todays, it is progress.The ignorances and other human flaws are still very existent within every society, regardless of the boundaries between them be it geographical or cultural. Stereotypes and misconceptions exist in the modern society. Stereotypes arise when there is a single radical group who are accepted as the representation of their apparent subculture. Then the ignorant and misinformed take these “representatives’” behavior as a generalization of the entire group. While the less common misconception is made by some incomprehensible anomaly where an entire assumption is based around a single social group, that has never even proved to be true. There is a stereotype that is attached with the College educated community, they are believed to be almost guaranteed success. The fact that they have a degree in their respective field has built a stereotype of the “successful ones.”
This particular class period consisted of around 3 students, but one student was working particularly just by himself with his teachers aid. Even before it started Ms.Metcalf classroom energy felt a bit off, and come to find out that during lunch one of the students had been teasing the other student. The student that had also been causing trouble had out of nowhere stolen paper clips off of Ms.Metcalf. The other student was not able to stay on task, because he still felt upset from the incident that occurred during lunch. This soon became more of a discipline class rather than the student learning about math, and apparently the "bully" had created pointer with the paper clips that could have actually hurt someone. Soon after Ms. Metcalf had to call the assistant principles to step in to discipline the student, and lost a entire day of instructions due to one student misbehavior. After the misbehaving student had left she went over to the emotional distraught student and began discussing that he should never let people 's words if they weren 't nice and that entire lesson became a lesson on
When they admitted to the teacher why didn't understand something, the students that did understand would laugh, and mimic them. I literally watched them belittle a persons character. They made them feel less of a person. Those attitudes and actions from the students made the other students feel like they were stupid or dumb. All because they didn't catch on right away or as quickly as them.
While teaching the Spanish lesson on the months of the year, CJ said an inappropriate word out loud causing disruption in the class. He did that three times, causing the rest of the class to begin to laugh. During the past two weeks, CJ has been acting out in class by making jokes, and laughing on the pronunciations. I have given him time to adjust to the new class, as we only meet every Thursday during the 6th period. However, today his behavior was not acceptable.
This was a great deal back then. The students always called their teachers sir it was their way of showing respect. Today in our age most students don’t even say “Mr.” in front of the teachers names they have no respect these days. Logan implies, “teachers play in the lives of pupils, some throw tantrums, curse, insult or even attack teachers” (Logan).
However, there is only one downfall to this class. When presenting videos, as a class, we are to give written and verbal feedback to students. I feel that in some cases other classmates did not take feedback respectively. I feel like it was disrespectful. Despite my help, I felt like the classmate was trying to prove a point at the learner’s expense. I understand it is hard to take constructive criticism. However, we only learn from feedback. In the modern era, stereotypes seem to be the ways people justify and simplify the society. Actually, “[s]tereotypes are one way in which we ‘define’ the world in order to see it” (Heilbroner 373). People often prejudge people or objects with grouping them into the categories or styles they know, and then treat the types with their experiences or just follow what other people usually do, without truly understand what and why.
