About the Author Kate Balland is a sixth grade student at Martha Brown Middle School. She is a dedicated and committed author of Stepsister Twisted. She had a lot of fun writing this story thanks to her wonderful English teacher, Mrs. Smith. For example, Kate enjoyed adding the dialogue to give the characters some real life and meaning. One of her siblings is an older brother named Ryan who is fourteen years old. He goes to McQuaid Jesuit. parents’ names are Andi and Tom. Kate lives with her whole family in Fairport, New York. Kate is a very loving, and kind person who loves to play lacrosse and run outside in her free time. She also enjoys early morning walks with her two dogs Mia and Lucy. Kate loves listening to music during her early morning runs. Kate plays the flute and is in the 6th-8th grade Symphonic Band at Martha Brown Middle School. She loves the band teacher, Mrs. Phelps, and she loves playing the amazing music with her fellow flute players. She also enjoys being involved in school events, such as the talent show which she is participating in with her very best friend, Neevah tice. Darryl’s life is worth fighting for. “You can’t buy what I’ve got.” ‘The Castle’ directed by Rob Sitch, about one man, his family and neighbours on the verge of being homeless. Darryl Kerrigan, the “backbone of the family” won’t stand for that. Of course no one can buy what he has. He’s spent almost his entire lifetime building what he has, why should he give it up? Darryl’s way of life is simple yet filled with family values. 3 Highview Crescent is the home to Darryl, his wife Sal and their 3 children: Wayne, Steve, Tracy and Dale. (Wayne currently being in jail.) The house is made up of love, and simple family values. Darryl’s also added bits and pieces to it. He’s added on so much to the house, his own personal touch. His neighbours, also in the same bout are almost family to the Kerrigans. Jack and Farouk are another reason why Darryl’s ready to take matters into his own hands.
Alexander Stowe is a twin, his brother is Aaron Stowe. Alex is an Unwanted, Aaron is a Wanted, and their parents are Necessaries. Alex is creative in a world where you can’t even see the entire sky, and military is the dream job for everyone and anyone. He should have been eliminated, just like all the unwanteds should have been. He instead comes upon Artimè, where he trains as a magical warrior- after a while. When he was still in basic training, and his friends were not, he got upset, he wants to be the leader, the one everyone looks up to.
Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate is the story of an African boy, Kek, who loses his father and a brother and flees, leaving his mother to secure his safety. Kek, now in Minnesota, is faced with difficulties of adapting to a new life and of finding his lost mother. He believes that his mother still lives and would soon join him in the new found family. Kek is taken from the airport by a caregiver who takes him to live with his aunt. It is here that Kek meets all that amazed him compared to his home in Sudan, Africa. Home of the brave shows conflicts that Kek faces. He is caught between two worlds, Africa and America. He feels guilty leaving behind his people to live in a distant land especially his mother, who he left in the midst of an attack.

Perhaps no other event in modern history has left us so perplexed and dumbfounded than the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, an entire population was simply robbed of their existence. In “Our Secret,” Susan Griffin tries to explain what could possibly lead an individual to execute such inhumane acts to a large group of people. She delves into Heinrich Himmler’s life and investigates all the events leading up to him joining the Nazi party. In“Panopticism,” Michel Foucault argues that modern society has been shaped by disciplinary mechanisms deriving from the plague as well as Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, a structure with a tower in the middle meant for surveillance. Susan Griffin tries to explain what happened in Germany through Himmler’s childhood while Foucault better explains these events by describing how society as a whole operates.
In "Our Secret" by Susan Griffin, the essay uses fragments throughout the essay to symbolize all the topics and people that are involved. The fragments in the essay tie together insides and outsides, human nature, everything affected by past, secrets, cause and effect, and development with the content. These subjects and the fragments are also similar with her life stories and her interviewees that all go together. The author also uses her own memories mixed in with what she heard from the interviewees. Her recollection of her memory is not fully told, but with missing parts and added feelings. Her interviewee's words are told to her and brought to the paper with added information. She tells throughout the book about these recollections.
The world is filled with many different types of societies and cultures. This is due to the fact that many people share dissimilar beliefs and ideas, as well as diverse ways of life. People lived under different circumstances and stipulations, therefore forming cultures and societies with ideas they formulated, themselves. These two factors, society and culture, are what motivate people to execute the things that they do. Many times, however, society and culture can cause downgrading effects to an assemblage if ever it is corrupt or prejudiced. Society and culture not only influences the emotions individuals have toward things like age differences, religion, power, and equality but also the actions they perform as a result.
The author of Arcadia, Tom Stoppard, uses a lot of irony and incorporates a web of relationships and coincidences into his plays that can get a bit confusing, especially if you are not familiar with the things that he makes reference to. In the play, on page thirteen, Lady Croom, Thomasina's mother, compares Mr. Noakes' landscape style to that of Ann Radcliffe's and Horace Walpole's imagery, both of which were Gothic novelists of the eighteenth century. The author's purpose in including this bit is interesting, especially if you are familiar with the novels he refers to. Here's some help:
Massie- Massie is a rich 7th grader that really isn't that nice of a person. She only is nice to her posse and does not include anyone else into her little clique. Massie is the leader of her social group.”Kristen: Do we like her? Massie: No!”(41) This shows that Massie is the leader because her friends do whatever she says. Massie one day basically decides that Claire, the new girl in town, will be her target. She will embarrass her and torture her and do whatever she wants to her because Claire has no friends yet and isn't really the typical girl around all these rich girls. Massie thinks that she isn't hurting Claire enough and she isn't getting any reaction out of Claire really so Maisie gets her friends to tear her down right along side her.
Diamant has Dinah effectively tell her story from three different narrative perspectives. The bulk of the novel is related by Dinah in first person, providing a private look at growing up and personal tragedy: "It seemed that I was the last person alive in the world" (Diamant 203). Dinah tells the story that she says was mangled in the bible.
Inside Toyland, written by Christine L. Williams, is a look into toy stores and the race, class, and gender issues. Williams worked about six weeks at two toy stores, Diamond Toys and Toy Warehouse, long enough to be able to detect patterns in store operations and the interactions between the workers and the costumers. She wanted to attempt to describe and analyze the rules that govern giant toy stores. Her main goal was to understand how shopping was socially organized and how it might be transformed to enhance the lives of workers. During the twentieth century, toy stores became bigger and helped suburbanization and deregulation. Specialty toy stores existed but sold mainly to adults, not to children. Men used to be the workers at toy stores until it changed and became feminized, racially mixed, part time, and temporary. As box stores came and conquered the land, toy stores started catering to children and offering larger selections at low prices. The box stores became powerful in the flip-flop of the power going from manufacturers to the retailers. Now, the retail giants determine what they will sell and at what price they will sell it.
Based in the seventies Sid and Nancy, directed by Alex Cox in the year 1986 was full of foul language, bad acting, and loud music but made up for it with humor, love, betrayal, and truth.
In the short play "Trifles,” by Susan Glaspell, various questions and issues originate concerning with the bond between women, the difference between male and female, and what life was like in the early nineteen century for women. In addition, the importance and development of symbols are crucial. Throughout the play, Glaspell uses symbols to further and support Minnie’s isolation and lack of happiness in her life.
The play entitled “Trifles,” by Susan Glaspell, begins as a murder mystery that turns into a drama as the story unfolds. The story is focused on the investigation of a murder that took place in a farm house. The investigators, who are all men, are in the farm house looking for forensic evidence to help them solve the murder. The wives of two of the investigators are there to retrieve personal items for the wife of the victim. Mrs. Wright, who is the wife of the victim, is in jail as the primary suspect of her husband’s murder. When the story begins, all the characters are in the kitchen engaging in small talk. One of the investigators is criticizing the state of the kitchen by complaining that it is dirty and unorganized. The women, who are also house wives, empathize with Mrs. Wright and defend her kitchen by reminding the investigator that house work on a farm is not easy. Throughout the story, the men consistently make stereotypical statements against the women and Mrs. Wright. This paper will analyze male dominance and the effect it had on the female characters. More specifically it will examine how the female characters were forced to develop an intimate bond and how they formed an unspoken form of communication to combat the patriarchy displayed by the male characters.
I remember reading all sorts of short stories when I was younger, learning the different lessons from the stories. The lesson of the story is basically the theme. The author uses a combination of literary elements to convey the theme. In the story “How I Met My Husband”, by Alice Munro, the theme was a little difficult to figure out. After rereading, decoding, and researching the story, I came to the conclusion that the theme is hoping for true love. I will be explaining how Munro uses plot, point of view, and symbolism to describe the theme of the story.
