In March 2012, when Justin was in the sixth grade, he started to rapidly lose weight, was experiencing extreme exhaustion and night sweats. It was found that he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Justin began multiple different chemotherapy treatments which he would continue to receive over the next 3 and a half years. During his treatment, Justin was unable to play sports, but he coached a 5th and 6th grade basketball team and led them to ten straight wins and a first place conference finish. He was able to return to school in the eighth grade. Unfortunately, in November 2016, Justin’s cancer came back, and he missed most of his junior year of high school. Last March, an undefeated basketball squad faced a tragic loss, and unfortunately it was not the game. An undefeated season was on the line for the Fennvile Blackhawks, and the whole town was in attendance. The game went into overtime and Wes Leonard was ready for it. Seconds left in overtime, the score was tied again. It was the last play of the game, and Wes Leonard drove to the basket for a lay up, putting them up by two. Time expired and fans rushed the court looking for the hero that made that game winning basket. Seconds later that hero collapsed to the ground. When one thinks of fatal diseases, what comes to mind? Cancer? Organ failure? Brain damage? All of those things and more could be a thing of the past with the incredible potential of stem cell research. Stem cells are like blank cells that can take the form of other kinds of cells. This gives them the ability to heal damaged areas, or grow replacement tissue for tissue that has been diseased. Stem cells can come from several different places, some of which cause lots of controversy and ethical debate. Because of this, stem cell research is not federally funded by the United States government. But, stem cell research has tons of potential and should get more attention for the greater good of our future.
Currently, the limitations on research are too restricting, as researchers are limited to resources already gathered. There are sixty existing stem cell lines today, already derived from embryos. Researchers are to only use these lines. These limitations severely hinder stem cell research. The government, especially President Bush, should re-evaluate stem cell research.
Imagine that there is a cure for nearly every ailment that affects the human race. Elijah Huggins was born in Hampton, Virginia on November 25, 1997. He has five older siblings, four living and one deceased. He attended Newsome Park Elementary, Huntington Middle School, for ninth grade he went to Warwick High School, for tenth grade he attended Kecoughtan High School, and for eleventh and twelfth he went to Heritage High School. Elijah suffers from the sickle cell disease. Growing up with disease was a struggle, but he became a stronger person. His last couple of years in high school was really bad. Elijah grew up playing basketball with his older sisters. Once his last years of high school came he wasn’t able to play. The sickle cell disease caused him to be in and out of the hospital. He nearly didn’t graduate because of him being out so much. The sickle cell disease caused him to have pain crisis. Which means anytime he grows it feels all of the movement in his body especially in his back. When his ribs grew it caused so much pain that he wouldn’t want to breathe/take deep breaths because it hurt him so much.

Since the first stem cells were separated there have been doctors, religious groups and even some political figure head have shown their opposition for stem cell research. Even with the knowledge and promise that stem cells show many of those who truly oppose stem cells have not changed their mind.
