In today’s world it may seem like there are millions of new and old diseases, but with advancing medical technology and brilliant research done by scientists involving stem cells, there are more miraculous cures, however, they are not without, great controversy. Recently, scientists have been looking into stem cells, and trying to learn what they are all about. Some of the new information people have found is incredible, and even life saving, but, there are also several problems. This is, without a doubt, a very intriguing topic, but, also very controversial.

The Canadian Stem Cell Foundation claims that, “Bone marrow stem cell transplantation has been curing some kinds of cancer for decades, but in other potential areas we’ve barely begun scratching the surface” Currently there are several clinical trials being done involving stem cells. One current clinical trial is working towards healing hearts, or using stem cells to grow new hearts that are made specifically for transplant patients. This research could be very helpful in the future. Every year 70,000 Canadians have heart attacks, and 23,000 of them could greatly benefit from this medical advancement. Scientists are currently working extremely hard to find an absolute solution to this problem. As of right now they think that the solution will be found in the next three years. Another new clinical trial wants to use stem cells to cure spinal cord injuries by injecting stem cells. As of right now this is more of an idea than a plan, but it could definitely be available in the future. Doctors have injected neural stem cells, in hopes of them developing paths to connect the nerve fibers, and stimulating regrowth. So far patients have only shown small improvements, but with more research there could be a great impact. Regardless, the future of stem cells, and what they're capable of is looking

Could you imagine being able to create new organs, tissues, muscles, and even food? With embryonic stem cell technology, believe it or not, these things are possible. Stem cells are the body's raw materials. Specifically, they are cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or in a laboratory, stem cells can divide to form more cells called daughter cells. These daughter cells either become new stem cells or turn into specialized cells with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, muscle cells or bone cells. The possibilities are almost endless. The debate and main issue with this technology is that the actual stem cells come from embryos. Embryos are an unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development. Although there is controversy surrounding these cells, embryonic stem cells should continue to be researched and used, because they have so much potential.
When one thinks of fatal diseases, what comes to mind? Cancer? Organ failure? Brain damage? All of those things and more could be a thing of the past with the incredible potential of stem cell research. Stem cells are like blank cells that can take the form of other kinds of cells. This gives them the ability to heal damaged areas, or grow replacement tissue for tissue that has been diseased. Stem cells can come from several different places, some of which cause lots of controversy and ethical debate. Because of this, stem cell research is not federally funded by the United States government. But, stem cell research has tons of potential and should get more attention for the greater good of our future.

Human cloning research has once been the subject of terrifying science-fiction films and novels, science experiments gone wrong, accomplished only by the evil scientists twirling their moustaches. However, ideas presented on page and screen are rarely accurate. The possibility of cloning an exact copy of another human with one already fully developed is almost impossible, but through meticulous research, scientists have discovered the numerous benefits of cloning humans, either with individual cells or an embryo.
Have you ever seen a movie or read a book where they can tell what your child will look like or if they have a disease or birth defect. Or have you ever wondered how the world would be shaped if we could have clones or even erase genetic diseases. All of these things are theoretically possible with stem cell research. If we are able to reach this point what would we have to sacrifice in the process. To understand humanity would we have to sacrifice the values that truly make us human? The three current kinds of stem cells all prove to have their own challenges when it comes to using them. The important thing is finding out which stem cell is right for the patient and how much of an ethical concern there is when it comes to using the stem cell. As we learn the best way to use them and they become more popular in the medical field, stem cells will become a new weapon in the fight against certain diseases.

The stem cell research controversy is one of the major headlines in bioscience and has been discussed and debated numerous times throughout the last decade or so.
There has been a great debate on whether there should be federal funding for stem cell research over the last decade. This has been a very controversial subject because in order to obtain stem cells, scientists must destroy a human embryo; making this a subject ripe with emotional turmoil. For close to three decades, the status on funding for stem cell research has remained in limbo. In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled that abortion is legal in the first two trimesters, a decision made in the famous case of Roe v. Wade. In 1996, the Dickey-Wicker amendment was adopted, stating that there shall not be any federal funds “for the creation of a human embryo for research purposes in which the embryo is destroyed, discarded or knowingly subjected to risks of injury or death” (Annas).
There is a number of people who believe that embryos are not human. Because of this accusation, things like abortion and stem cell research appear to be a right and a necessity. But this is not the case, for there is proof that embryos are human. The beginning of any biology and sexual education class will tell you that a baby is created through a fertilized egg, creating an embryo, which will grow and develop to eventually become an adult. The technological world we live in today is a result of scientific discovery. Although a big portion of the research has benefitted daily life, researchers are starting to push the limits of their experiments. Because some work with the cells of living things, their research is changing the building blocks of life and the creation of it. Stem cell research, cloning, and genetically-modified foods are examples of successful experiments that are becoming part of daily life. Many issues have to question about the direction science and it’s researchers are going. The argument calls for either stricter rules and surveillance of scientific development, even bans on some forms of research or full approval for scientists to go on with their research, using whatever or whoever they need. Many believe that science along with scientists should have limits.
