In the article by Steffens and Rennie, it states that, “For the spouse of the sexual addict, the disclosure of the existence of a sexual addiction and/or related sexual behaviors is described in existing literature as a crisis and a traumatic event.” This is pretty much the main idea of this article, is addressing the needs of the spouse that has been affected by their partner looking at pornography. This is something that I think people should look into more when they are getting married because I feel like a lot of people don’t really or fully understand the impact of their actions. The fact of the matter is, is that something like this causes an actual crisis in the mind of that person’s spouse. A lot of times we focus so much on the person
1 Wilson Follett, in the article “On Usage, Purism, Pedantry” from Modern American Usage, promotes how two parties view the rights and wrongs concerning the usage of language.
56% of divorce cases in the United States have reported the cause of divorce as one member of the couple having an unhealthy addiction for pornographic websites ("Pornography Statistics: Annual Report" 2014). The Merriam-Webster dictionary describes pornography as "movies, pictures, magazines, etc., that show or describe naked people or sex in a very open and direct way in order to cause sexual excitement." In a recent study of dating or married couples, 73% of males reported to using pornography at some level (ranging from low to high frequency use), while only 32% of females reported using pornography (Poulsen, Bubsy & Galovan, 2013 p. 73). Pornography has highly addictive qualities, which are often dismissed as "human nature," and is the leading cause of unhappiness leading to divorce in marriages. The ease of access to online pornography makes this worse because it is much more difficult to quit because of how easy it is to access it. If someone is addicted to drugs, they would need to find a supply if they were tempted to relapse. With an online pornography addiction, all someone needs is a computer to relapse into their pornography addiction. This form of addiction is not seen as an issue because of its dismissal as “human nature.” Online Pornography addiction negatively affects the addicted party's serious relationship or marriage, the addicted person's partner, and the addicted party themselves.
Substance disorders affects all social, educational, cultural, and age groups. Substance abuse research often focusses on the abuser and the family as a whole but not how it affects their spouse. United States misuse is linked to approximately 590,000 deaths and is responsible for injury or illness to almost 40 million individuals every year. (Cox, R., Ketner, J. & Blow, A. 2013). The consequences resulted from this disorder, are not only related to the substance abusers, but also have a great influence on their behavior and other layers of their life, especially their wives (Salehyan, Bigdeli, & Hashemian 2011). When the husband or boyfriend has an addiction the wife takes on responsibilities of her spouse which causes an increase in stress. Marriage is generally described as a protective factor against substance use. The concept of codependency was developed to explain what happens to the spouse of a substance abuser.
When it comes to relationships there are many things that need to be present in order for it to work out. You must have support from both sides and honesty is also a big factor. When pornography enters a relationship it can be destroyed and could possible ruin that relationship forever. This essay will be able to inform you of all the ways that pornography can and does ruin relationships. Support for this argument will be drawn from the following sources: Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, Love, Sex, and Health, and The Question of Pornography.

Infidelity is depicted as an extremely negative thing in the United States, and is often blamed for trust issues, psychologically damaging the spouse and their children, tearing apart marriages and families and more. People who commit adultery are often shamed and told how wrong what they did is and what a terrible person they are for doing it. According to the Journal of Martial and Family by the Associated Press, however, 41% of “marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional.” Clearly, while infidelity is generally viewed negative by society, many people either decide that it is not as negative as it is portrayed, or do not care and do it anyway. “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “The Storm” both go against the typical view of adultery being a negative thing in a relationship by showing that it can actually have a beneficial outcome and leave some, if not all people happier.

Pornography also has negative effects on women as well, mainly in terms of self-esteem and self-worth. If a woman is in a relationship with a man who watches porn frequently, she would most likely feel that she isn’t sexually fulfilling her partner, or that her body isn’t good enough. Not to mention seeing other women being controlled with such force and frequency could make one believe that they actually are just sexual objects and should be dominated by

There was a time when more smart-conscious decisions were made relating to sexual relationships. In particular, sexual relationships within a marriage. However, times have changed. The pillars that hold up our individual sexual values have started to crumble. It is estimated that two out of three marriages fail due to infidelity. This is a scary statistic considering that people believe a marriage can survive infidelity. This brings us to our first myth: Everyone has affairs.
“Consuming pornography does not lead to more sex, it leads to more porn. Much like eating McDonalds everyday will accustom you to food that (although enjoyable) is essentially not food, pornography conditions the consumer to being satisfied with an impression of extreme sex rather than the real.” -Virginie Despentes. Pornography is not a force that is relatively new, but new enough that in today’s world of modern medicine, and medical advances, we are seeing effects and by-products of pornography not formerly seen. Researches such as Dr. Valerie Voon, Jim Faust, and researches at Cambridge University have added legitimacy behind the claims that pornography is a harmful, such as addictive substance like nicotine, alcohol, and in certain cases, even heroine. There are four primary ways that I believe porn effects a person. Porn is like a drug; porn is addictive; porn affects your behavior and porn addiction escalates.
... between exposure to pornography and commission of violence, but this research was conducted in 1993 which is now outdated. Another point, which she emphasized, was that a greater availability of sexually explicit material seems to correlate with higher indices of gender equality. But when the sexually explicit material shows the subordination of women or women presented as sexual object who enjoy pain or humiliation, how can they be equal as men when the men are shown as the gender that enjoys subordinating women. (Strossen,550). Feminist author Diana Russell notes in her book Rape and Marriage the correlation between deviant behavior (including abuse) and pornography. She also found that pornography leads men and women to experience conflict, suffering, and sexual dissatisfaction.
Porn shows all women having big butts, boobs, and a curvy body as normal and most men expect their significant others to be like them physically as well as act like them during sex. Porn also depicts women as being an “object” who do not need any kind of love, intimacy, or connection which is definitely not the case in a relationship and can destroy someone’s sex life. A person can also become addicted to porn which can lead to erectile dysfunction and them keeping their addiction to themselves and not informing their partner which has an impact of someone’s sex life. Porn can destroy someone’s relationship as well as sex
