The use of cellphones have affected how people communicate with one another in society. The articles are significant because they provide valid studies that show and prove how people are affected by the use of cellphones. Additionally, these studies are all important because they have conducted each study differently, in different places, and with a different methodology. Four of the studies have proven that individuals have became so attached to their phones that they have forgotten to use their own mind to think critically, solve problems, and communicate with people in society. This was the one article that did not fit in with how cellphones affect the face-to-face interactions and the way individuals think, but still had an advantage because it included a positive attribute about smartphones. Symbolic interactionism is how people communicate or interact with one another. (Munsterhjelm, 2017). The use of smartphones or cellphones tends to be eliminating face-to-face interactions, but enhancing long distance communication. The article Staying Connected While on the Move found that cellphones help people to stay in contact with family members or friends, which is a form of conversation or symbolic interactionism (Wei,& Lo, 2006). These articles are definitely consistent with my own experiences. Cellphones have affected my social life with family and friends. I have to agree with the articles by Nathaniel Barr et al (2015), Kim Jung-Hyun(2017), Niclas Lundberg et al(2013), and Kostadin Kushlev et al (2017) that discuss how cellphones can have a negative affect on people, due to people not being able to communicate face-to-face. I have been in many situations where I will start to tell a story just to realize my friend is on her phone, so I will stop telling the story, which will evidently go unnoticed by her. Cellphones seem to be taking over our society and individuals have definitely started to lack in their communication skills. Individuals have became so attached to their smartphones that many cannot even order food without looking at their phone or drive to a destination without looking down for their cellphone. I am very happy that texting and driving is becoming a highly patrolled incident with major fines because it is very dangerous and could take innocent peoples’ lives away. Although there are many negative consequences with cellphones, there are a few positives as well.
