Nursing is a highly reputable profession “that focuses on the care of individuals, families and communities for them to maintain or recover optimal health and quality of life” (Nursepractitioners.org.au, 2014, n.p). Within the nursing profession there are various specialties. The specialty that I would like to pursue a career in is Midwifery. “ A midwife is a health professional who works with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy and the postpartum period” (Nursing.health.wa.gov.au, 2014, n.p). In this report I will be talking about why I am interested in this specialty and also the types of patients I will be looking after, as well as the specific tasks I will perform from day to day. In addition I will also outline universities and institutions where I could further my study to become a midwife.

You go to college to learn most everything you need to know. You could maybe move up if you wanted to, and learn more. I think I would love to be what I have been looking for the last month. Taking care of babies, and keeping them healthy is amazing. I would get paid a lot, but that’s not the only reason why, but you would love your job as well.

It is important to understand what women commonly experience during pregnancy. With a better understanding of what happens during prenatal development and childbirth, physicians can competently develop the best plan for the mother and baby. I interviewed two women who have been previously pregnant in order to evaluate how the ideas in the book translate into real-life experiences.

The Human being is a most intriguing subject of study. From their impressive communication skills to their problem solving ability, time and time again they stand out as being an intelligent species that is diverse and responsive to their environment. One particular aspect that makes them most attractive is their ability to adapt to change and stress. Pregnancy is a great example that displays how the woman’s body adapts to major physical, psychological, and emotional changes that occur almost concurrently. These changes trigger an untidy heap of powerful emotions. From excitement and joy to fear and anxiety for both the expecting mom and her ...
I overcame two major barriers as I worked toward my goal, my father’s opinion about appropriate careers for women and my lack of English. I grew up in a village where the nearest doctor was three hours away. When I was eight years old, I was surprised by my aunt’s pregnancy and intrigued to learn more about pregnancy and fetal development.
Chances are that terms such as “midwife” and “home birth” conjure up for you old-fashioned images of childbirth. These words may bring to mind scenes from old movies, but you’re not likely to associate them with the modern image of childbirth. Do you know anyone who has had a midwife-assisted birth or a home birth? Would you consider one?
I am a registered staff nurse who prior to commencing my midwifery training was working on a surgical ward facilitating pre and postoperative care for critically and chronically ill patients. I was fortunate that during my nursing training I had an opportunity to be assigned practice placement with the community midwives and visit the labour ward. After this learning experience I was able to make a decision to undertake midwifery training after completing the required period of post registration experience. While with the community midwife I attended antenatal clinics where I practiced midwifery skills, namely palpation and auscultation with a Pinard’s stethoscope and enhanced my communication skills. Unfortunately I was unable to hear anything through a Pinard’s stethoscope and so when I made a decision to pursue midwifery tr...
Women, children, and families have better lives because of the work of certified nurse-midwives. I have always wanted to make a difference-and have a positive influence on health care, which has lead me to my interest of the midwifery profession. To learn more about midwifery I chose to interview Kathleen London-Lopes. Mrs. Lopes is a board certified nurse midwife at Highland Obstetrics and Gynecology, in Fallriver Massachusetts. Along with the information she gave me about being a midwife I also researched information on onetonline.org. I believe my desire to care for others and promote women and infant health are two qualities I posses to become a successful nurse midwife.
I have used the recommended reading list in the course handbook to write this essay, yet it has taken me several pages and numerous edits to produce this final script. In order to avoid confusion in style, I consulted mainly two books but paid particular attention to Gimenez J (2007) Writing for nursing and midwifery students Palgrave.
