Statement of Purpose I was born in the city of Bangkok in Thailand as the youngest child of my family. I have one brother who is two years older than me. I am in the middle class family and my parents both are the workers of the bank. Since I was young, I had been cultivated to be careful about spending money and not wasting things. I attended the same primary school as my brother, in order to reuse used textbooks from my brother for saving money. In additon, it was easy for my parents to take us to school and pick us up after school. Because of the value of every Baht my parents have dedicated to my studies, I have always been hard-working and constantly tried my best for all opportunities I got. My National Test score was excellent, so I could enter the Satriwithaya School where is the one of the greatest girl’s school in Thailand. I had a chance to learn Mathematics-Chinese program for the secondary education. That was the starting point of my Chinese. I had been happy to study Chinese twice a week in the school. As the senior high school student, I was the school representative participating in many academic competitions and got some prizes. Although I studied French program, I have always been interested in Chinese. Thus, when I got the scholarship from Assumption University where is the most reputable private international university in Thailand, I did not hesitate to choose the Department of Business Chinese as my undergraduate course. When I entered the university, I have accessed in the Chinese education seriously. I felt I have extremely focused on Chinese more than before. I have attempted to use and learn Chinese in my daily life. Now I intend to march to a different drummer again. I want to become Chinese teacher, while the rest of my family members are working in the accounting field. Thus, I want to apply for this scholarship. If I get the Taiwan scholarship, it can be helpful for my family as well as me who have not had income yet. The remaining expenses that do not be covered by the scholarship award, I will pay them by using my savings because I do not want to burden my parents. My mom would always say, “American born Chinese students have it easy in America.” One key difference between the American education system and Chinese education system is the way they are taught. Being raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I went to school to understand the idea of analyzing and understanding concepts. After reading Only Hope, I realized that their education is based on more memorizations. To Chinese students, understand the concept and apply it is not the most important, you must just memorize it for the exam. Many parents in China would say that going on vacation and relaxing is a waste of time because they need to focus on learning. In Greenspan’s article, it mentions that a student in China is the top of her class and is fluent in English, yet she cannot go on vacation because her mother wants her to spend time learning, many students in China
I know that through my hard work and dedication I can make my goals a reality. However, it may not be possible without these Scholarships. My family and I moved from Pakistan eleven years ago in search of a better life. Their main purpose in moving here in the U. S. was to send me to an American college to gain a first-class education. My father ran a convenient store and a medical store for over 20 years. I remember that he used to walk to his shop to work everyday. His dream is to see me becoming a successful businessman. Furthermore, he expects me to have my own office, wearing a nice handmade Italian suit, and performing computer related jobs. Now that I am ready to graduate, my father’s dream will come true. All I did was work hard and I am optimistic that I will find success.
In conclusion, Chinese parents assume that Chinese foreign students are expected to solve problems and to move through experiences toward globalization. Also, Chinese parents believe that studying abroad in America is advantageous to assist Chinese students in achieving the delightful life and approaching to be globalized. The evidence is that studying abroad in America provides more opportunities for Chinese students to better access to knowledge and to better obtain global view.
With all of the downfalls that I have experienced in my academic and personal life, a college education will make it possible for me to continue my journey into becoming a prestigious corporate lawyer. I am applying for this scholarship to help me pay for college. As everyone knows it is very expensive and sometimes hard to pay for all the things involved. My family is doing everything they can to help pay for my college. One of the biggest obstacles we have faced is applying for the FAFSA. My parents do make a lot of money, but they both have student loans they have to pay. My mom has two majors so she has a lot of money to pay back to school. While applying to FAFSA, these factors are not taken into consideration so we did not get as much money as we had hoped. If I am selected to win this scholarship, it would be greatly appreciated and would help me in many ways to continue my education.
