However, many oppose STEM education because there is no demand in the economy for it. They also claim there is enough diversity in the field already, but the STEM field is largely populated with white men. This makes it hard for woman and minorities to see the value of this type of education. In the article “Who Wants to Be a Rocket Scientist,” author Sikivu Hutchinson notes Tyson was told to shoot hoops instead of shooting for the starts (Hutchinson 8). During 2017, the fall of my senior year, we held elections for National Honor Society President. I was one of the members selected and later got elected into the position. This position has taught me the importance of quality leadership in order for the success of a program along with how to prioritize my time and stay organized while helping to engage members to enable them to be the best people they can be. Because of this, I was selected to Party Secretary and, along with three other appointees, was left to organize the debate. The four of us worked tirelessly, and on the day of the debate, it payed off. It is one of my prouder honors to say that that we four appointees had kept five hundred of our peer organized and in check throughout an entire two hour long political debate. Looking back on this, I realized how much I learned from the experience. I had learned to succeed but I had also learned to fail. I overcame a discouraging loss and ultimately made it farther than I think I would have had I won the senatorial election. I also learned to work with others. In today’s world, diversity is the highest point and people of many different backgrounds, races, gender, or religion. This diversity can provide better performance in real world situations. In the article, “Diversity in STEM: What It Is and Why It Matters,” Kenneth Gibbs, Jr., an author who has a Ph.D. in immunology and trains the next generation of scientists, discusses why he believes diversity is important in the real world and how a lack of it may result in some issues. Gibbs, Jr. proposes how diversity influences and benefits the STEM fields and other fields by providing testimonial evidence. Being only 18 years old, I believe that I have accomplished a lot within my small amount of time on this earth. For me, the high school experience was not simply going to school, completing the schoolwork and repeating that day to day. For me, high school was about making tangible memories. The acronym STEM simply refers to science, technology, engineering and math. The acronym does not mean that STEM defines any specific type of job only in the sense jobs are related to science, technology, engineering, and math. Because of the nature of these jobs refers to STEM industries, these types of jobs in education and social sciences are not included. The main jobs included are within the fields of computers and math. Almost the same number of boys and girls are graduating from high school and even more girls are graduating from college, yet women are still underrepresented in STEM industries. Though women comprise more than half of the workforce in the U.S economy, they hold less than twenty five percent of jobs in STEM industries.
Finally, our company should find some ways to boost gender diversity. In the third article “How to boost gender diversity in STEM”, using gender ratio statistics of 14 major tech companies Abby Perkins (2014) showed how serious of the gender diversity. Using ethos, Perkins (2014) mentioned the current trends in U.S. that only a few women are interested in STEM field. A substantial part of the enjoyment that will come from pursuing a STEM degree is knowing it is something that I have always wanted to do since I was a young girl. When I was about 10 years old, I started to watch the Discovery Channel on television. These shows captured my attention and my love for science, and ultimately led me to want to pursue a career in the science field. Then, when I was a freshman in high school, I realized my true love of science from honors Biology and being introduced to the microscope. In our effort to address the barriers to healthcare access, our mission is to improve our clients well-being and health outcomes by providing medical, mental, and preventive services for individuals with a history of chronic homelessness. With a collaborative effort aided by the case management and outreach currently offered by the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC), the mobile clinic will provide additional supporting services that will focus on bringing mental health services, healthcare and social services directly to our clients. As we strive to integrate our services by collocating a mobile clinic, we will focus on disease prevention and healthcare promotion through primary care, while employing a biopsychosocial approached with the goal of optimizing wellness within the population we serve. The objectives outline for the medical outreach program will focus on improved quality of care by using every advantage that is presented with a collocated model and the cross discipline solving techniques that will be available with coordinated care. This holistic approach will include a care team that will bring additional resources and will also focus on being the link to additional comprehensive services while monitoring treatment and outcomes. The integration of services can also prove to be cost effective by the flexibility it offers and by consolidating the resources currently available at WLCAC. The program will also be sustainable by using the working relationships it will have with other community health providers and by using the educational services provided by the University of Southern California.
