Nothing is better than using your knowledge to contribute to the success of others. There is never a day that goes by that I do not think about how I can use my skills to improve my community. Because the Bell Scholarship was founded on the belief of giving back to the community, my involvement in numerous service projects makes me a an ideal recipient to carry on the Bell Scholarship’s legacy of giving back. Throughout my high school career I have participated in various service projects that demonstrate my true passion for using my academic skills to give back to my community. For example, I was born and raised in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, which directly neighbors the West Englewood neighborhood where I attend school at Lindblom Math
Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities including: National Honor Society, student council, National Council on Youth Leadership, student ambassador, drama club, yearbook, and chamber choir. It is throughout these activities that I have felt myself grow as a person and have found many opportunities to shine as a leader. The Burger King scholarship is an amazing opportunity and an extremely generous foundation. It is with the help of this foundation that allows for people to make their dreams come true. I am grateful to of been chosen as a Burger King Scholar and will use the scholarship to make a difference.

The community should encourage continued community service from college students that receive scholarships and or some type of financial aid to volunteer, with the existing programs. This could increase the amount of people available to these after school and summer programs, while saving the city some money. This could prove to be a major step in continuing to improve the city and make it a desired place to live and prosper.
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
I equate service with helpfulness—assisting others. I help both my school community by answering questions and giving feedback and my community as a whole through my volunteer activities, the most enjoyable of which has been Habitat for Humanity.
In this effort, I serve the community by making an effort to keep the people in it healthier. Lastly, I show service to my school through the help I provided while in the National Junior Honor Society. As a member of NJHS I helped our middle school begin a recycling program; I helped get the recycling boxes and bins ready, gather paper from around the school, and sort the paper after school. Through this I show a dedication to my school and community, because not only does recycling help the school reduce waste but it also allows the environment resources to last longer. For these reasons, I am an excellent, determined, helpful member, who is more than willing to provide service to my school and community.
However, most of my volunteer work comes from outside of the school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc. For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer for the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me.
My first experience that involved contribution to a community was in an organization known as girls as pearls. In this organization we participated in many volunteer activities, both domestic and global such as making dresses for girls in africa or volunteering at the samaritan ministry. Consequently, this early volunteerism experience influenced my involvement in the community as a high school student. I became involved in organizations such as key club, an organization focused in volunteerism. Additionally, I began to tutor middle school students and volunteering at the local church. Many of the volunteer activities that I have participate in involved children and this due to the reason that I want to be able to become a positive guide and role model for children. I want to contribute to their motivation of continuing their education and to reach for goals that they believe they can achieve. As a hispanic american I have been provided the opportunity of experiencing life from two different viewpoints which has provided me with various life lessons that aided in my development in becoming a successful and well- rounded
My senior year of high school alone, I completed over 160 hours of community service. Being a full-time student and a part-time worker, unfortunately does not allow for much spare time, but whenever I do have a chance, I always volunteer through my youth group in church. One of my biggest goals in life is being able to give back to the community on a much bigger scale. Ultimately, I hope to even go full circle and give scholarships to Hispanic student like me.
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
I can also make a difference in the community where I live. Last year my class held a car wash to raise money for the Animal Shelter. We went to visit the dogs there and I realized that the money we raised made a difference for some of them.
It took me eighteen years to realize what an extraordinary influence my mother has been on my life. She' s the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions about which artist she would most want to have her portrait painted by (Sargent), the kind of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of community leader who has a seat on the board of every major project to assist Washington' s impoverished citizens. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but I also came to understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange for a new sense of life, love, and spirit.
During my time volunteering there, I was heavily involved in the youth program, where I helped with homework after school and planned fun weekend activities. After graduating and finalizing my decision to attend Howard University, I knew wanted to continue serving even while thousands of miles away from home. So, when I found out that DC’s Ward 1 (the ward that HU is in) is considered a food desert, I joined a food justice organization which fed over 50 people affected by daily hunger during Thanksgiving break. Looking to the future, I know that I want to continue positively impacting others and I want to create change on a larger scale, beyond my small hometown and beyond Washington D.C Despite the uncertainties that I may have about my specific career path, I know that through my international business major I want to serve and support global
Volunteering exemplifies many traits that schools find desirable, such as initiative and a care for others well-being, and many colleges feel that students who do volunteer will be assets to their school. Because of this, many universities donate money every year in community service scholarships. One such scholarship that comes through volunteering is the Abbey Road Green Ticket scholarship, a scholarship that awards high school students who have “demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the environment and their local communities” (“Abbey Road Green Ticket Scholarship”). The Abbey Road scholarship may seem too good to be true, but it is just one of the many scholarships that go to the students who choose to volunteer. Many of the scholarships that come as a result of volunteering go towards furthering teen’s education.
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
As an educated professional in my community, I would like to make a contribution to society and my community. My background in hours of community service has prepared me for this and shown me its value.
