Attn: Graduate Selection Committee I am applying to your master’s program in Graduate Certification in Addiction Counseling for the fall of 2016. In the spring of 2016 I will be earning my undergraduate degree in Social Science with a Minor in Child & Family Studies. I have worked for the past two years within the homeless population as a Residual Advocate here in Portland. From the time a child enters preschool, teachers begin asking a common question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” That dreaded query has always haunted me, mostly because the way it was redundantly asked put a ton of pressure on me and my peers. The question was like a rusty nail being hammered into our head’s by society. I continuously had the cliché answers of becoming a doctor, teacher, or a police officer, but with serious reservations. After years of not having a clue, I started to think about what I like to do after the stresses of work and school were gone at the end of the day.

Individuals’ perceptions of their life/worth have the power to control the goals that they can carry out and meet. Every day we are learning new things and everyone has his/her own unique ways of learning. My strong desire to help students with their academic, personal, and social needs make me a strong candidate as a school counselor. While completing my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Program Administration I learned a great deal about myself. I have a passion for learning and want to share and express that love for learning with students. I feel that the Master of School Counseling program provides a direct path to my career goals of helping students to comprehend subject matter while learning to love learning as I do. Not only will
On that fateful day as I stood in my black and pink salmon graduation gown, I pondered on the skills I was equipped with in just 11 months of master 's study and I yearned for more. While these skills have enabled me to function as a research fellow at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) post-graduation, I find myself seeking to enhance them and gain more knowledge. My attendance at professional conferences, registration in short courses, and seeking mentorship can attest to this fact. Thus, in my quest for continued academic and professional excellence, I deem it necessary to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in epidemiology and the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (JHSPH) will be the perfect academic environment in which to do so. Being my alma mater, I witnessed first-hand the quality education offered by the outstanding faculty. The opportunity to work hand in hand with renowned researchers who have made tremendous contributions to various research studies and the prospect of establishing a mentoring relationship with them is held in high regard. Also, the effort at promoting innovative research, cross-cultural diversity, and great alumni networks, are undeniable perks obtainable at JHSPH. No wonder JHSPH is ranked the best academic institution in the public health field nationwide!
Addiction has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, from my earliest memories of my father, until now as I am a licensed professional in the field of addiction as well as a person in long term recovery myself.
I am interested in pursuing a Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in addiction because my personal objective is to help and improve the lives of others. I believe in giving back to the community and helping to find or develop more resources that these individuals may not have access to. I am interested in counseling individuals of all ages and who have a wide variety of addictions. Upon receiving my Masters of Science, I hope to purse a doctorate degree in clinical mental health counseling while working as a substance abuse counselor. This is the right time to further my education because I am more knowledgeable and self-aware. Ever since I could remember there has always been an inclination towards science. The desire to understand how things worked has always intrigued me. Set on the inclination I always explored the basic application of science i.e. building a lemon battery to designing a simple pulley lift at science fairs at school. Thus making Production Engineering a good option. It provides a strong engineering foundation and also educates on the management of an industry. This is the very reason I was able to decide that I wanted a career in this field.
Born in Goa, with its many famous beaches, I grew up along the seaside. As a child I have spent my evenings watching huge marine vessels entering and leaving the port and developed curiosity about the working of huge ships. Because 70 % of the planet is covered with water, sea transport has been the largest carrier of freight throughout recorded human history. A lot remains to be explored about the water bodies in the world; moreover, the rising crunch on land resources will force further exploration of the seas and the oceans areas to replace them. Be it floating cities or floating international airports or for that matter bulk intercontinental transportation by marine vessels, water bodies, across continents, water bodies serve to be a useful medium, and the engineering and science needed to understand its dynamics is in demand.

My winding journey has generated an ample amount of confidence in me and today I stand firm with open arms to embrace the further challenges, both, personal as well as professional.
What is life? Why do people look different? These are questions that I eager to know answers since I was young. When I view the characteristics of people, I usually think that some traits are inherited, whereas others are caused by environmental factors. For human diseases, I would like to know the relative contributions of genetics and the environment. Is a disease caused by a pathogenic microorganism, a toxic agent in the environment, or a faulty gene? My interest in molecular biology has been inspired by these questions and led me to the world of genetics.
My parents observed me having fun playing with it and decided to givWhen I was in 1st Grade, I won the first position in a poem-recitation competition in my school and I received a set of building blocks as prize. That was probably the first time I had my own set of building blocks. My parents observed me having fun playing with it and decided to give me more such sets. That was how my arsenal of building blocks expanded and so did my interest in this field.
I was born in the city of Bangkok in Thailand as the youngest child of my family. I have one brother who is two years older than me. I am in the middle class family and my parents both are the workers of the bank. Since I was young, I had been cultivated to be careful about spending money and not wasting things. I attended the same primary school as my brother, in order to reuse used textbooks from my brother for saving money. In additon, it was easy for my parents to take us to school and pick us up after school. Because of the value of every Baht my parents have dedicated to my studies, I have always been hard-working and constantly tried my best for all opportunities I got. My National Test score was excellent, so I could enter the Satriwithaya School where is the one of the greatest girl’s school in Thailand. I had a chance to learn Mathematics-Chinese program for the secondary education. That was the starting point of my Chinese. I had been happy to study Chinese twice a week in the school. As the senior high school student, I was the school representative participating in many academic competitions and got some prizes. Although I studied French program, I have always been interested in Chinese. Thus, when I got the scholarship from Assumption University where is the most reputable private international university in Thailand, I did not hesitate to choose the Department of Business Chinese as my undergraduate course.

However, neither my necessity of research skills nor my insatiable appetite for technologies is satisfied by my undergraduate education. So here I am applying for a Ph.D. degree.
