The University of Toledo Levis Leadership program recently played a game called StarPower. Students initially drew five chips of varying values from a bag and then had the opportunity to trade. After trading, students were broken into three groups based off of their chip values: the lowest point values triangles, middle point values circles, and upper point values squares. Then there was a series of other rounds where students had the chance to improve their placement. The final round began with the squares setting new rules for the game and ended with the circles and triangles working together to face oppression. StarPower is important as it focuses on societal values, personal actions and perspectives, and developing leadership. Throughout the entire StarPower simulation, I was a member of the triangle group. While I missed out on experiencing the circle or square groups, I got a unique and complete perspective of the triangles. In some ways it was easy to be a triangle, but in others it was not. For me, being the second worst in the class, the game was especially fun because I had nothing to loose. I imagine that this was not the case for the circles and squares or even more higher class triangles. I thought the triangles were easy to get along with because we had to work as team players instead of individuals to enact change. I enjoyed how …show more content…
I realized that I really enjoy teamwork and dedication. I found that by putting other’s needs first, success can be found in a different sense. As I think back to this activity, I probably would have made the same mistakes as the squares if I had been in their position. It is easy to fall into a negative and defensive territory when blessed with power and privilege. Overall, I enjoyed StarPower. It taught me so much about power, teamwork, and privilege and how each can be used positively or negatively. I hope this experience will have me make better choices in the

Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. The movie, “Twenty Feet From Stardom,” was released in 2013. It focuses on the careers of backup singers, who have shared their voices to support some of the greatest artists of the past several decades. The film is an interview-based documentary. From the film, we meet a serious of amazing and talented vocalists, such as Darlene Love, the first black backup singer; Merry Clayton, a lead backup singer; Lisa Fisher, Tata Vega, and Judith Hill. They all share their stories of enjoyment, happiness, or even struggles in making music with others. There is no doubt on the fact that backup singers take very low credit, sometimes even no credit at all. They often just go there and make the thing sound great, and then go home quickly. I was born with an inherent fascination for all things celestial. Ever since I was young, I have been staring at the night sky trying to find constellations, or using my juvenile imagination to create my own. My efforts to find, view, and mentally catalogue everything the heavenly bodies have to offer has led me to employ some over-the-top measures, but the most extreme of them all might be the night I stayed awake through the wee hours of the morning to catch a glimpse of a meteor shower. Ken MacLeod's The Star Fraction is a fantasic science fiction novel about love, loss, socialism, anarcho-capitalism, "American-style ‘black helicopter’ libertarianism", and the looming threat of a fascistic world order. The Star Fraction's setting is post World War III UK, where the republican government has been overthrown by the monarchy, and a new kingdom has been established. After many failed violent revolutions to over throw the monarch, the USA has taken over the UN to form a new world order, all in the name of peace, referred to as the US/UN. In "The Peace Process", the US/UN created mini states throughout Europe to allow political dissidents to have their own private communities. A way of containing everyone who would threaten the stability of the region into harmless sub-regions.

One of the most important stages we looked at was the storming stage and this point of transition was intimidating to me because managing conflict effectively is a personal challenge. Confrontation has always been anxiety producing for me but in this class I learned how productive it can be. In class we said that storming can happen during a transitional time, maybe when the facilitator is providing less structure or there is a power struggle against two group members. Whatever the presenting problem may be it is causing a great environment, for people like me, to work on their conflict resolution in a safe atmosphere. Overall, there are numerous benefits and opportunities related to this phase of group work.

The emphasis on leaders being not just executives and managers, and that not all executives and managers are leaders, is extremely vital. Anyone can strive to be a leader in whatever organization in which they are involved. Bennis and Nanus claim that leadership is about character, setting the example for how team members treat one other (and in a corporate setting, their clients as well), being truthful and sustaining organizational trust, and encouraging themselves and others to learn. On one hand, it can be easy to see how many people in leadership positions do no match up to these standards of leadership. On the other, it seems a bit like common sense to be truthful to others and to effectively communicate with people who work together everyday. Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. I attended Mass at my local parish, the Parish of St. Francis de Sales, on Sunday, October 9th, in order to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This also happens to be the 28th Sunday of Ordinary Time because the priest of the parish, Father Phan, wore green in order to symbolize life, anticipation for the coming of Christ, and hope. The liturgical season of Ordinary Time is also significant because it focuses on the fruits of Jesus’s three-year public ministry, his educational parables, and his extraordinary miracles. The season of Ordinary Time also serves as a reminder that the Church’s mission, our mission, is to not only share the life and hope of Jesus
