Starbuck’s, Nordstrom, Boeing, Costco and Wal-Mart have all been
chosenas Fortune Magazine “USA 100 Best Companies to Work For”
Starbuck’s, Nordstrom, Boeing, Costco and Wal-Mart are leaders in
their industry and have been doing business successfully. During the
research on their Human Resource Management (HRM), I can see their
successes are firmly related to their effective and efficient HRM
strategies. There are many factors in common among these five
companies’ HRM strategies: devotion to employees’ benefits, employee
training, a diversified work environment, promotions and rewards
system, friendly and healthy workplace and outsourcing opportunities,
Starbuck’s business has been boosting year by year. For many people
that have had Starbuck’s coffee, they may notice that Starbuck’s
customer service is outstanding. Every customer is treated like a VIP
and with high quality service. This has a lot to do with Starbuck’s
HRM. Starbuck’s provides its management team and employees training to
help them better understand its business process. Also, Starbuck’s
offers a wide range of job opportunities for people to develop their
potential.

Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack are different retail operations in terms of their choice, pricing, store service, and store atmosphere customer intimate firms, which excel in serving the specific needs of the individual customer well. There is less emphasis on efficiency, which is sacrificed for giving more precisely what is wanted by the customer. Reliability is also stressed. Nordstrom is an example of this discipline. Nordstrom must meet some standards of cost-effectiveness. When customers evaluate the quality of a product, they commonly measure it against two kinds of attributes: those related to quality as excellence and those related to the quality of reliability. From a quality as excellence perspective, the important qualities are things such as a product’s design and styling, its aesthetic appeal, its features and functions, the level of service associated with the delivery of the product,
With the ever growing society that we live in today, it is a challenge to uphold a business with conservative values. When attempting to accommodate all stakeholders, taking a conservative approach can be very limiting. As conservative companies expand nationally and internationally, they face the challenge of needing to appease a wide range of customers that hold different values. With that being said, Chick-Fil-A has become a very controversial company in the past years with questionable ethical decisions pertaining to gay rights.
First, Nordstrom is unique through its excelling customer service. As a full-service retailer, Nordstrom assists customers in every phase of the shopping process. Because they carry more specialty goods, customers will need and want more assistance leading to increased value of customer service. One of their policies is that they will accept any merchandise that people bring back without asking any questions. As a result, people feel more confident about purchasing products from there, since they can buy something with the comfort and knowledge that Nordstrom has an excellent return
Nordstrom is one of the top retailers in the United States. With a solid brand image and a sound financial situation, Nordstrom is relentless in their expansion in the US, and are beginning to expand into international markets. Nordstrom takes pleasure in providing state of the art client support and having experienced sales people. In order to hold their position as the most successful high-end retailer in the United States, Nordstrom must continue to figure out ways to improve their brand image and customer satisfaction. Nordstrom’s current business working strategy is successful but I believe there are a few ideal solutions that the organization could apply to further enhance the organization. Due to the aggressive characteristics of the fashion retail store market, it is crucial that Nordstrom preserves an aggressive advantage providing the highest level of customer support as possible.
With the ability to control its stock and see at a glance how any store is performing, Wal-Mart is able to keep its finger on the pulse of its business and make critical adjustments as necessary. The low transportation costs it achieves with its own transportation system makes it possible to deliver goods to different stores within or under 48 hours, and transportation costs are only 3% of the total costs, as compared with 5% for their competitors ("Wal-Mart 's Supply Chain Management Practices: The Benefits Reaped"). Its advanced methods of transport, This combination of technology and down-home attention to customers as people makes Wal-Mart hard to beat on any soil, and it uses the winning formula to maximum advantage.
In Living for the City, Donna Murch details the origins and the rise to prominence the Black Panther Party experienced during the 1960s and into the 1970s. The Civil Rights Movement and eventually the Black Panther Movement of Oakland, California emerged from the growing population of migrating Southern African Americans who carried with them the traditional strength and resolve of the church community and family values. Though the area was driven heavily by the massive movement of industrialization during World War II, the end of the war left a period of economic collapse and social chaos in its wake. The Black Panther Party was formed in this wake; driven by continuing violence against the African American youth by the local police forces,
The primary Kmart store opened its doors on March 1, 1962, in Garden City, Michigan, which focused on selling a huge product selection at cut-rate prices. Throughout the first 30 years, Kmart was referred to as largest retailer store around, even surpassing its competitor Walmart. Kmart stores were designed to increase store sales by increasing the frequency of customer visits. For three decades Kmart looked like there was doing everything right but when they were growing they were also slipping in to a deep hole. Many factors played in their eventual cutback, but supply chain management was their biggest fault. In the 1990’s growing competitors like Target, Sears, and Home Depot took some Kmart’s market place with Wal-Mart taking the biggest slice.
...on to create equality was too ideological. The members of the Black Panther knew that their goals were impossible to reach. There is a movement called the “New Black Panther Party” that deals with the issues that the Black Panthers never completed. Possibly, if the Black Panthers had tried more to fit into the community and had been less radical, their party may have lasted longer which would have led to greater effectiveness.
Last week I wrote about how Coca Cola and other various food and soft drink corporations lobby Congress to halt any talks of improving welfare. It is a sad day when we cannot improve a system for the better of the country, but these lobbying efforts are not the only action that harms the American taxpayer. Wal-Mart also has there dirty hands in on the entitlement money, but in another way. Yes, Wal-Mart does lobby Congress to halt any improvements to welfare that will lose them money the long run, but they also do another very dirty trick with their workers and it is costing the American taxpayer handsomely.
The micro and macro factors mentioned previously have a direct impact on the operations of Loblaws and Shoppers at that time. In a growing competitive environment and a changing retailing landscape, the two companies need to accommodate itselves against new economic, social, technological and political trends. There are many reasons and potential benefits behind the merger of Loblaw Companies and Shoppers Drug Mart, which are mostly long-term strategic business oriented goals.
In week two, the assignment was to read about the company listed, and answer the questions provided. American Eagle Outfitters is a company that produces fashionable items for people in their teens, to mid-twenties. Their company offers a wide variety of products that range from personal accessories and clothes to fragrances. These goods sold by their company are considered to be of great quality for a reasonable price. Another interesting aspect of this company is that they create and promote their own products (Bethel University, 2011).
The Black Panther had a huge background of history, goals, and beliefs. Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, Ca 1966, founded the Panthers. They were originally as an African American self defense force and were highly influenced by Malcolm X’s ideas. They were named after Lowndes County Freedom Organization or LCFO. The Panthers had many goals like; giving back to the ghetto, protecting blacks from police brutality, and to help blacks get freedom and jobs. They also had many beliefs like; Malcolm X was a great person, and they believed that gun use was ok if necessary, or if people were oppressing the poor.
1. If I were to design Ben & Jerry’s data warehouse I would use several dimensions of information. The first dimension would consist of the company’s products; ice cream, frozen yogurt or merchandise. The marketing department has to know which products are selling, if Ben & Jerry’s didn’t know that their T-shirts are selling out as soon as they hit the stores, then they wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the opportunity to sell the shirts. The second dimension would consist of the different areas of sales; US, Canada, Mexico, or Europe. I am not sure if they sell their ice cream in Mexico, but with data collection they can find out if their ice cream would be a better seller in the hot climate, rather than pushing for greater distribution in Canada. The third dimension would consist of the “specifics”; where the sale was made, when the sale was made, and who purchased the product. This information can help in the design of the product to focus on the buyer; it can tailor flavors to seasons, and packaging to buyer who looks for the better-looking product. If Ben & Jerry’s could know when a season was coming to an end in a specific area, then they could forecast the need or the decline in need and speed up, or slow down distribution to those areas. The focus of the information is that it needs to be useful, and almost any information is useful.
As we have reviewed and studied the strategy, culture, finances and the challenges and successes at Wal-Mart, there are many strategies we see that the company must undertake to hold its dominate position and drive further growth. Herein, we define our top four. These core strategies include: rebuild and recreate its reputation in the face of recent challenges; continue to show price leadership; improve the customer experience; and drive international growth.
Preliminary Starbucks – one of the fastest growing companies in the US and in the world - has built its position on the market by connecting with its customers, and creating a “third place” beside home and work, where people can relax and enjoy themselves. It was the motto of Starbucks’ owner Howard Schultz and, mostly thanks to his philosophy, the company has become the biggest coffee drink retailer in the world. However, within the new customer satisfaction report, there are shown some concerns, that the company has lost the connection with customers and it must be taken some steps to help Starbucks to go back on the right path regarding customer satisfaction. I will briefly summarize and examine issues facing Starbucks. Starting from there, I will pick the most important issue and study it from different positions.
