Staples, an office supply company that has very little competition and a great amount of employees. I have shopped at Staples a few times and have never had any problem with the company. The employees were always nice and willing to help when you needed assistance, but once discovering this article title “Staples, Like Other Companies, Can Afford to Treat Their Workers Right” I only thought that a lot of positive statements and fact would come from it. However, once I read the article and then read it again to analyze all aspects and part of the article I had then knew there was a problem. This article discusses many flaws that are found within the company Staples and it is presented in a relatable and easily understandable manner. Numerous times while reading this articles my jaw would drop or at some times I would become filled with anger. Discovered by Buzzfeed was a memo sent to employees who worked at the Office Supply Store Staples. The memo stated that they were going to begin enforcing the Part-time associate hours’ policy. This made is mandatory that part-time work is to only work less than 30 hours a week, but Staples instead set their max work ours to 25-hours-per-week. This policy was introduced following the new …show more content…
This concept can be defined as being legal, but unethical because it is perfectly legal for a company to cut workers hours, however it should not be ethically done because it will have a drastic affect on the worker. Workers are often not taken into account when these changes are mad. Companies value the idea of meeting requirements at the end of the day regardless of what measure they had to take to meet that requirements. Which in this case they cut part-time worker hours down to a maximum of 25 hours per

Within an excerpt from, “The United States of Wal-Mart,” John Dicker explains that Wal-Mart is a troubling corporation. Dicker begins his article by discussing why the store is so popular within the news in an age of global terrorism, coming to the conclusion that Wal-Mart has a huge scope in the United States and that it has more scandals, lawsuits, and stories than any other supercenter. Continually, he goes on to explain that Wal-Mart outsources jobs and their companies demands makes it hard for employees to have livable wages and good working conditions. Furthermore, Dicker addresses the claim that Wal-Mart provides good jobs, by destroying this perception with statistics showing how employees live in poverty and that their union scene

BestBuy really needs to know the expectations of consumers to be able to align on the same distribution line than its competitors that continue to cut its market shares by offering the same products at very competitive prices. There is no doubt about the threat that may represent specially Wal-Mart for BestBuy, its "Every day low price" slogan speaks for itself. Today, quality’s problem is used as a marketing argument, but it’s not over true even though Walmart some low quality products. We have to notice that most of the producers of nowadays ’technologies are Asian countries as proof, IPhone and well-known brands technologies have always been manufactured in China. So the quality problem is not really the problem BestBuy is facing because there is no doubt that Wal-Mart and BestBuy have the same suppliers since everyone claims to offer high quality electronics. The first thing to do is to figure out how Walmart makes the difference by lowing its fixed and variables costs to better maximize profit even though offering low cost product. I think BestBuy needs to review its employees ‘training budget since they already have a good knowledge about the product they offer. As cited on page 22-4, even though its revenue grow, at the same time its net income and operating

Few companies create as much controversy as Wal-Mart has done with its approach to maintaining high profits with low costs. Individuals either love or hate Wal-Mart. There are consumers who like the low prices and convenience of shopping at Wal-Mart. Supporters of Wal-Mart also laud the fact that the company creates multiple jobs for not just the individuals who are employed within the stores but also those who create the products that are sold in the stores. Critics of Wal-Mart have issues with the treatment of those individuals who work at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has a poor track record when it comes to Fair Labor Practices by giving low wages, bad healthcare coverage, and treats employees. Low wages, no benefits, irregular schedules, and unreliable hours are just some of the horrible working conditions most Walmart workers have to endure.
Jules Michelet once stated, “Achieving a goal is nothing. The getting there is everything.” This quote reveals that all goals are not hard to achieve, it is the journey that is difficult. These factors can either hinder individuals from achieving their goals or some use the negative as a stepping stone. According to “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples and “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, this quote becomes relatable. Staples and Tan experience many internal and external factors that impeded their goals. For instance, Staples experience many racial and gender-based conflict on his road to success as Tam face many language-based and literacy-based barriers preventing triumph. Although Tan and Staples encounter various hardships on their journey toward success; instead of quitting due to frustration, the two creates a greater force towards achievement.
...taples' Soul program they could give incentive to pay for college for its employees. This would allow the customers and employees to benefit from this program which will now target all stakeholders while letting them know it, it would also leave the Staples' Soul program intact.
From this, it is clear that not everyone is a fan of the company. But where are this perspective coming from? It is just as likely for them to be from a biased outlet as the information they’re presenting being false. However, these perspectives can be easily counteracted by opposing ideas. One of which being the author stating the so-called “investing over $2.7 billion in wages” plan. Which I can confirm is true. In addition, since this plan was introduced in 2015, it has had a positive impact on the companies sales both in stores and online. The 200 training centers opened in 2015 as mentioned by the author, was a positive implementation in order to increase the minimum hourly rate. Before of which, had been a common complaint and issue associated with the company. Not only this, but there were endless complaints made about the company’s employee treatment, but it seems as though Walmart has acknowledged these complaints and in recent times has taken a step in the right direction. The author had not addressed much factual information regarding its suppliers and rather the “goals”
Kelly was hired as an assistant language teacher (ALT) and had been working for six months. She was to work three days a week in the board of education office and two days helping with the English program. Her contract stated that her hours were Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 5 PM. These hours were not the hours of the Japanese workers. Their culture had the employees working six days a week and rarely took time off. Kelly’s contract also had vacation and sick leave time given but stipulations as to when a doctor’s note was needed and the notice time given for time off for vacations.
As America’s second largest corporation, largest private employer, and the largest retailer, Wal-Mart always is making the headlines for their wages, benefits, and working conditions. More often than not, these headlines are not the kind Wal-Mart is encouraging. Wal-Mart receives 5,000 lawsuits a year solely because of employee conditions. In an interview with ‘Dan,’ a manager of Wal-Mart stated that he has seen people forced to do heavy-duty work despite being pregnant or having a medical condition that interferes with the task (Figueroa.) The overworked employees are only the beginning of a Wal-Mart epidemic.
Walmart has had a long-standing presence in America society since the middle of the 20th century, seen as a place to get everything done, Walmart has become a fixation in our society. From grocery shopping, to changing your oil and even filing your annual tax returns, Walmart is always there, everyday. Started by Sam Walton in 1962, it began as a small operation catering to a small Arkansas community. It was started on principles very similar to small local businesses in small towns. Today Walmart has gotten a different, darker reputation. On the surface, Walmart may seem like the solution to everyday issues. Low-income families are attracted to the low prices, and people who work odd hours benefit greatly from the 24 hours a day that many Walmarts are open. Lately, Walmart has also managed to be publicly recognized as a store that sells many of today’s green products, including organic food, environmental conscious cleaning products, as well as, paper products made from recycled paper. However, underneath all this, Walmart has a different side. Exploitation of its workers is widespread amongst Walmarts who do not belong to a union, especially in the United States. Wal...
Small business owners of fortune 500 companies, democrats, republicans, men and women all have ethical responsibilities that should always be considered. Mc Donald’s is a well-known restaurant around the world. Some people enjoy this fast food restaurant and also have made Mc Donald’s one of the leading fast food companies. Although, Mc Donald may have some tasty food, there are still many critics that think Mc Donald’s may have a lot of ethical issues and company violations. Some consider being ethical is simply defined as knowing the difference between what is considered good and evil. However, ethics is defined as moral principles that govern a person’s or group’s behavior, and the practices that violate them. The practices of unethical behaviors, by various fast food corporations, like McDonalds have become of great concern to our society.
Employee stakeholders have another story. The discrimination lawsuits ranging from female employees not getting equal pay or equal positions, to disabled employees, class-action lawsuits stating that Wal-Mart doctors questionnaires to prevent disabled workers from applying, Wal-Mart does not rank very high with these employees. Lawsuits stemming from Wal-Mart’s failure to monitor labor conditions at oversea factories and hires illegal immigrants add to the rift in relations between the employees and the company. Wal-Mart continues to deny charges...
