Standardized Terminology Assignment Standardized Terminology provides a basis for which software systems, devices, applications, and other entities can connect and communicate, providing a complete picture. In healthcare, we rely on multiple sources of information from clinics, laboratories, pharmacies, primary care providers, and hospitals to exchange information through electronic health records (EHR) which allows for more comprehensive care. It is about speaking the same language (Andrews et al., 2016). Within healthcare, we have a set of standardized terminology that has been established and allows the ability of multiple systems, providers, or countries to exchange and apply health research and information in a meaningful way to patients. …show more content…

Data collection allows for precise measurement of nursing workload and resource utilization which can be used to optimize staffing levels, ensuring that nursing resources are allocated efficiently and effectively (nurse-to-patient ratios), as well as reduce burnout among nurses. Health Information Exchange (HIE) Health Information Exchange (HIE) refers to the process of electronically sharing health-related information among different healthcare organizations and systems. The goal of HIE is to facilitate access and the retrieval of data to provide safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable patient-centered care. HIE enables the secure and efficient electronic exchange of health information, such as patient medical records, laboratory results, medication histories, and imaging reports. HIE is designed to work across different healthcare IT systems and platforms, ensuring that health information can be shared and understood by various healthcare providers and organizations (HealthyIT, …show more content…

One challenge when it comes to HIE in nursing practice is that there are so many different EHR systems and each has varying formats, making data exchanges challenging (HealthyIT, 2020). Interoperability Interoperability in healthcare refers to the timely and secure access, integration, and use of electronic health data that can be used to optimize health outcomes for individuals and populations. Various systems and organizations can work together to exchange information. It helps clinicians deliver safe and effective care and allows the patients to have access to their EHI so they can be partners in managing their care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2024, p. 203). As people all over the world are aging and living longer, interoperability is going to be critical in delivering effective and quality care. Even though the use of EHRs has increased and many hospitals have access to medical records and patient data from outside providers, we are still not integrating that data into their records (IBM, n.d.). We now have access to vital information and we need to create an integrated system bringing inside and outside information
