In the Film Stand By Me by Rob Reiner, there are 4 boys that go a journey to find the missing body of Ray Brower. Friendship was key theme shown throughout the entire movie it was shown by the director's use dialogue, shot types and actions. In Stand By Me, 4 boys go through difficult times by helping each other out, through their friendship. As the film went on the boys bond and friendship grew stronger and stronger as they faced many difficult challenges such as food, shelter, and leeches. Their friendship helped when they were dealing with the leeches from the water by helping each other get rid of leeches and by thinking about what had happened to Gordie. The Director help show their friendship by using dialogue like “Gordie, Man, Are you ok?” and a point of view from Gordie’s eyes to show the expression on the faces of Chris, Teddy and Vern when he was down on the ground. This helps the audience see that they care for each other and it shows that they are good friends because good friends care for each other and help each other out when needed. …show more content…
The Director helps show the audience their friendship and loyalty with camera shots like a close up of Gordie pointing the gun at Ace when he was about to cut Chris and also medium close up of Gordie and Chris standing side to side show Gordie standing up for Chris and also dialogue from Gordie “I’ll Kill you.I swear to god.” to show that he is standing up for Chris and that he is angry at Ace for bullying him and stealing his cap. This shows the audience that loyalty is a very important part of friendship and that good friends will stand up for you no matter who it is and they are always there for each
Friendship is an unbreakable bond between two people and contains loyalty and love. In the story Chains, Isabel finds herself in grand friendships that play throughout the story. She showed how devoted she was towards Lady Lockton, Curzon, and Ruth by being there for them during tough times. In the end, friendship is the light through the darkness, powerful and important.
As foolish as that comes across as, Gabler asserts that the viewers make as if the characters are their friends in in order to feel good about themselves and not overthink about their alienation (357). This is the ultimate relationship; the characters are always close by; there is no turmoil; and they are very amusing. Although there is no interaction, the viewer still is under the impression that the characters are their friends. This relationship is really comparable to social media because people may never truly chat with their “friends” but they are able to “interact” through a screen. A friend from a television show may appear to be like the best relationship, but the ones that occur between the onscreen characters is indeed better.
What roles do characters play in a story? What shapes someone's behavior? What different types of people are they? These questions can be asked while watching Stand By Me directed by Rob Reiner. They can also be answered with the help of literary criticisms. There are two criticisms that fit perfectly with this movie. These two are archetypes and gender.
In Rodman Philbrick's Freak the Mighty he illustrates the idea of friendship. Max and Kevin a.k.a. Freak the Mighty go through many difficulties in life. One has physical problems and the other mental problems. They help each other get through these problems by supporting one another. For example when they get stuck in the tenements (apartments), or when they would go on their “quests.” When Max got upset when they talked
“When you are down in life, your friends get to know who you are. When you're up in life you get to know who your friends are.” -Anonymous. From the novel “Freak the Mighty”, the narrator informs us that Max and Kevin demonstrate a strong friendship. All in all, they were there for each other in the good times and the bad. So in conclusion, good friendship includes teamwork, trust, and having adventures.
One literary device Rodman Philbrick uses the reveal the theme of the importance of friendship is characterization, what Max thinks. In the story when the first
Chris Chambers can also be viewed as a main character because he is Gordie’s best friend and has such an impact on Gordie’s development. Chris also struggles with a failed home life. His father is an abusive alcoholic and his s...
Friendship is shown many times in the story of mice and men and friendship the primary theme of the story one that is shown time and time
We see this with Owen Meany when John tells us that Owen “gave me more than he ever took from me” (A Prayer for Owen Meany 2.509-511). Even with the death of John’s mother at the hands of Owen these too prove to be the best of friends. A friend is someone who is “A positive influence on your life” (What is Friendship? Friendship.about.com), this friendship proves this theory by the boys helping John finding his identity and Owen’s destiny. Along with friendship in the novel we see the importance of family and the role that it plays throughout the novel.
Life is fragile, everything that knows life will eventually meet death; it is impossible to mention one without the other. Humans have grasped the concept of life and death more so than any other species, yet we still consider it one of the great unknowns. All man knows in regards to life, he learns from his experiences with death. Man can look to many classic and religious texts searching for the meaning of life, but the only way one can truly learn it is through experience. To many, finding happiness means first coming to terms with the finite stretch of life one has and then making the most of it. Many films try to breach the subject of the preciousness of life, but only a few seem to hit as deeply as ones told through the eyes of a child.
Grace Pulpit once said “A friend is the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out.” True friends will always be present and have your back regardless of the circumstances. Amir and Hassan share a unique relationship; they are friends, brothers, and enemies. Growing up together, Hassan always had Amir’s back, but Amir did not always have Hassan’s. This developed a friendship that was one-sided, but the boys still had a close bond regardless. Amir says “…we were kids who had learned to crawl together, and no history, ethnicity, society, or religion was going to change that…(25).” The relationship between the two boys is one that is difficult to fully comprehend. The bond they share is one that not many people get to experience. The boys are separated from each other after the Russian invasion, but it is Amir’s decisions later in life that show what Hassan truly meant to him. They share a relationship that had varying definitions, but in the end they both loved each other. Amir and Hassan share this diverse friendship because of Amir’s selfishness, jealousy, and cowardly actions.
In his group of friends, he is the mediator and keeps peace within the gang, especially with Teddy. He acts as a father for his friends but mainly a brother for Gordie by giving him advice such as when he said, “You're gonna be a great writer someday, Gordie. You might even write about us guys if you ever get hard-up for material.” Although he is a kind, supportive leader for their group, he is not accepted into his community because of his bad reputation mostly caused by the rest of his
In chapter 13, it appears that Chris is the most mature in the group and that Gordie is in between until the end. Chris is like a leader and a parent to the gang and tells Gordie that he has to take college courses and if he doesn’t then he is a fool. Gordie seems to be a little resistant, saying that he will be with a lot of craven people and that he will stick with his friends, but Chris wants to help Gordie because his actual parents would never do anything for their only child left. Chris explains furthermore that people and friends drag you down. Chris probably wants to help Gordie, even though he is perfectly capable of taking college courses, so he can stay behind and help Vern and Teddy because they aren’t as reliable and sensible as Gordie.
It is not openly said, but it can be implied that they were clinging to each other because they were all each other had. The film covers Vern and Teddy’s lives after finding the body, but doesn’t mention anything about Chris and Gordie supporting each other through high school. I feel that taking this scene out of the movie subtracts from the main theme of the story, but doesn’t make their friendship at age twelve any
As friends, we all make sacrifices for each other. Some friends risk their lives for a friend. An example of this true friendship can be found in the movie, American Pie. Todd had a championship football game, but on the same day there was an All-State choir going on. Todd and his girlfriend were both into choir. He couldn’t be in two places at once, so he gave up his football game so that he could be with his girlfriend. Everyone on the football game looked up to him because he made a sacrifice to be with his girlfriend. When his girlfriend asked why. He responded, I did it for you. This shows friendship through a humble heart.
