Music has been important in my life. At St. Francis, I would like to continue my musical experience by participating in extracurricular activities such as choir and guitar. Through music I have found personal enjoyment, sharing with singers and musicians, and providing entertainment for others.
My first introduction to music was through choir in first grade. Mr. David Belles, my music director at Bullis Charter School, inspired me and my fellow singers over many years. Through his leadership, our choir sang in many different languages such as Latin, French, and Mandarin. He had us participate in an adjudication with other choirs. We learned a lot about how to present our songs formally. He taught us that it was not only important how we sounded,
On Wednesday, November 5th, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. the Charlotte Symphony performed seven compositions by various “maverick” composers. Halton Theatre at Central Piedmont Community College’s central campus was pack to near full capacity. The program included the Molto Allegro from Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G-Minor, Warehouse Medicine by Mason Bates, Apotheosis by Austin Wintory, Cielito Lindo a traditional Spanish copla, Oaken Sky by Chris Rogerson, Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel, and the 4th movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Charlotte Symphony’s Assistant Conductor, Roger Kalia, conducted and Juan Cajero appeared as a soloist. The live theatrical production I chose to see was 9 to 5 The Musical. The production was performed by Fayetteville Technical Community College’s very own Fine Arts Department. The musical is based on the film released by Fox in 1980. Collin Higgins adapted the film from the book 9 to 5 written by Patricia Resnick. It wasn’t until 2008 that the film was adapted to a theatrical production. The production was originally brought to broadway by Robert Greenbait and Dolly Parton wrote the lyrics and the music for the Musical. The run on broadway was very short but the production later toured in other countries around the around the world.
As you can see in the Killers’ version it has straight for music structure from the table above. If we compare this with Paul Anka’s rendition of Mr. Brightside, he does sing all the verses in the same order, and leaves out some words, but on the second time he only sings the second verse. Into the Woods is a musical based off of classic Grimms Brothers’ characters and their fairytales. The production explores the consequences of their wishes and the quests that they fulfill and take on. In writing this play, it seems as though Sondheim and Lapine were attempting to bring to life the classic fairytales of their youth with a twist of reality. Through this portrayal of classic tales, the audience is also taken back into their childhood for the entire two hours and forty-five minutes.
Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op.68, also known as the Pastoral Symphony was composed by Beethoven in 1808. Beethoven’s inspiration for this symphony came from his love for nature. The Pastoral Symphony is the only one of Beethoven’s symphonies that has five movements, the rest have four movements. Beethoven’s orchestra differed from that of earlier ensembles because he expanded his orchestras to include trombones, piccolos, and contrabassoons, although none of those three instruments appear in the first movement of the Pastoral Symphony (Yudkin, 2013).
A typical corrido is defined as a lyrical narrative that consists of eight quatrains with four to six lines. However, the significance does not lie within its musical structure; rather it is shown through its lyrics. The corrido depicts historical events; not through informing its listeners, but strives to use interpretation as a bridge of communication. The lyrics express topics from love and immigration to drug trafficking and malicious events. The Mexican community is able to emotionally connect with the lyrics materializing a sense of identity and pride - preserving historical and malicious events and cultures that have sentiment value.
Where I learned how to become a leader through the leadership ensemble within the marching band. Where in my senior and fourth year of marching competitively, I became the Drum Major, and earned the Best Drum Major Award at the Roxbury Marching Band Classic Competition. From marching band I progressed into jazz music, where I became the lead alto saxophonist in the top jazz band at my school during my junior and senior year. I was also one of three saxophonists in the top band at my school. I picked up the clarinet, the flute, and the soprano saxophone on my way through high school, and have played all three as well in my performing ensembles. I played in the pit orchestra of the theater production of “All Shook Up”, and was the principal saxophonist at my high school. Too be short, I am very involved in all things music in the past and currently. Band and music have been a place for me to rely on, something that brings me joy when sad. Allows me to express myself through sounds and through instruments. It is truly a talent and a hobby that I hope to continue through college and through life because of the joy it brought me and creative outlet it was throughout my
I have played an intrinsic role in my school’s band and orchestra department through helping organizing performances, teaching classes, and tutoring individuals. On a regular basis, I am responsible for directing and teaching classes including beginning band, with grades ranging from fourth to twelfth, and more advanced ensembles like concert band and marching band. I also play an important role in their performances sometimes by directing and other times by contacting venues to organize dates and times for the shows. I also dedicate time during the week to help beginning players
Music helped me realized that i am an auditory learner and helped me become a better multitasker what with musical, school work, and ski team happening all in the same season. Learning new pieces has always been a great experience for me and i’ve loved every
Music has always been an important part of my life. Upon entering the fifth grade, my parents bought me a flute, at my insistence. After moderate success playing the flute, I saw greener grass on the other side of the musical fence. Singing just had to be easier than making music with a long metal pipe. My perception and reality did not exactly match. Singing has its own subtleties and complexities which are not readily apparent to the casual observer. Abandoning the flute for singing, I began taking voice lessons in the tenth grade. My voice teacher was very experienced and encouraged me to pursue my interest in music beyond high school. After much deliberation, I decided to major in voice during college. This path would be fraught with unforeseen difficulties and exciting challenges.
The sitar and tabla drum performance, by Dr. John Protopapas was a very interesting look into the music of India and Africa. Dr. Protopapas also discussed his musical journey of becoming a sitar master. He showcased his mastery in both of the sitar and the tabla, as well as his ability to move people with his music, and deliver well-stated stories of his journey through life. Dr. Protopapas is a gifted sitar player. He had been taught how to play the sitar by a master sitar player in India, and had studied under him for 10 years.
Many public schools offer music education as part of their curriculum. Although these classes are required, many schools choose not to allocate enough money into the music programs in favor of better scores on standard tests. Recently there have been many strides to strengthen the importance of music education.
I attended the Milton Hershey School in the middle point of my eighth grade year from Wilson Southern Middle School. For the third and fourth marking period, I earned distinguished honor roll and effort and conduct achievements. The only student home I lived in was student Naples with the Kieffer's. In my time at Catherine Hall, I participated in Senior Hall combined orchestra, orchestra, Catherine Hall band, the Reading Symphony Junior Strings Orchestra, and PMEA District Orchestra. I developed strong relationships with my previous school’s band and orchestra directors Mr. Edward Luckey and Mr. Jerry Laboranti, and I remained extremely close with my RSJSO conductor who endorsed me to the Hershey Festival of Strings program in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
With the November 2014 signing of Brooklyn reggae outfit New Kingston, New York City indie reggae label Easy Star Records proved itself, yet again, to be much more than just “those guys who dubbed out Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’.” New Kingston’s new album Kingston City, their debut album for Easy Star, which was released on January 27, 2015, has impressively debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae chart. The album is the band’s third studio album and their first release to claim the #1 spot on the Billboard Reggae chart.
