On the rainy Sunday leading into Spring Break, I had the honor of worshiping with this church and I must say that it was a remarkable experience. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church believe that the Bible is God’s own inerrant and infallible Word, and that it is the only rule and norm for Christian teaching. The church happens to be a member congregation of the Lutheran Church in Missouri Synod.
The building is not a very modern kind. It is built with yellow bricks and no paintings on the outside. It has beautiful colored windows – six of them in each part in the long hall. Each window had a decoration; somewhat of a drawing. The ushers had no special uniform that they wore and so it was difficult to identify them. But the most impressing part of it was that they were all advanced in age, and they were in suits. This was significant to me because I have not seen a denomination that uses elderly people as their ushers. I also think this is most interesting because even the Bible said that the older men should be the ones presiding over the church. During the sermon, the pastor talked on the topic: “The Temple”. He discussed how Jesus is the Temple of God and why we should respect the Temple of God. After the sermon, the pastor said “Amen”. Then the congregation stood up and sang a song from the hymn book whilst some men in suit carry the offering plates around. After putting our offerings, the offertory hymn song was sung. After that, the congregation read from the Apostles’ Creed and sang the Benediction hymn. Then the pastor and the congregation recited the Lord’s Prayer that led into the final hymn. When the service came to an end, the members of the church left in a very organized manner. The first person that walked out of the hall was the pastor. Then the members of the church started moving in a single file from the front seat. Two men stood at the middle of the isle to ensure that they all moved out in an organized manner.
