Girls drop out of sports at six times the rate of boys (De Lench 2006). This is an alarming statistic, especially because sports participation has numerous benefits to offer adolescent girls. In spite of all the positive effects of sports, the rate of girls abandoning involvement is discouraging. Teen girls in America face many challenges today that may lead to potentially negative behaviors; however, by participating in sports, teen girls can boost their academic performance, improve physical health, and increase self-esteem.
Involvement in athletics has many benefits for teen girls, and one important benefit is improved academic performance. To be able to participate in a sport or activity, you must have passing and acceptable grades in order to remain academically eligible. This gives an added incentive to athletes to manage their time wisely and do well in school. Obesity is a growing problem that our society is facing today, and kids are just simply not getting enough exercise. As more girls have begun participating in sports, there has been a 24 percent increase in physical activity and a serious decrease in obesity among girls (De Lench 2006). Robert Kaestner conducted a study and found that girls’ participation in athletics is linked to a seven percent lower risk of obesity in women later in life (Kearl 2010). Reducing obesity rates is not the only benefit of girls participating in sports; in fact, girls who play sports have stronger immune systems which means less risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and some types of cancer (De Lench 2006). Finally, female athletes who participate in sports are less likely to use drugs, and are less than half as likely to become pregnant as non-athletes (De Lench
Athletes in times of difficulty can be important role models.” This shows that sports are in fact helpful because they can grow children into being important role models for the rest of society. Studies have shown time and time again that playing sports can be beneficial to children and we also believe this to be true. Many people still think that sports cause “too many injuries”, or coaches “are not fair enough”, but adolescents will experience these things all throughout their lives because injury can happen anywhere and they will not always be the best at what they are doing. Sports are beneficial to the youth because they can teach children and teens important life skills, help them maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, all while improving their mental health.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
Are high school sports beneficial or non-beneficial for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.

Some people may say that when you participate in a sport, it takes away from your studying time and then makes you not as academically inclined as others. High School sports allow a student to have a chance at not only increasing or maintaining physical fitness, but to be able to spend time with friends and fellow students to be able to work together to accomplish a goal that cannot be accomplished by individual efforts. For parents, sports can help their child by surrounding them with influences that support and promote good behavior both on and off the field/court. However, just because sports offer adolescents positive influences and rules to follow doesn’t mean that the students will decide to abide by these rules even though they are usually the logical and correct choice to make. Some student athletes still feel that there is a need to rebel against such rules, which usually results in the athletes being deprived of the sport or sports that the athletes deeply cherish. While a teenager in athletics has the opportunity to achieve their athletic goals without risk from outside activities, there are those who choose to allow those risks to destroy their personal goals and dreams in their high school athletic careers.
Suggesting that, forcing participation will ensure physical fitness in all students. Nevertheless, there are many other activities that ensure physical fitness without being forced into it, like physical education, wellness, and dance. In addition, this variety of choices allows for a student to be comfortable and flourish in their chosen course. Good academic performance prepare students for college, and secure scholarships to assist with the cost of college, and also prepare them for a career. Sports is not part of the curriculum and is not a requirement to graduate therefore it is a privilege to be able to participate in athletics. Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
