Overall this presentation was very short and I do not believe it to be 10 minutes worth of content. Not including the introduction slides, there is only 6 slides worth of substance with each slide only having a sentence of detail. I cannot possibly see one talk about each slide for over a minute on average to create a 10 minute presentation. Display wise: it comes across as dull. Each slide looks the same with the same backdrop and same centered image with simple black Calibri font on white background. I do not understand the argument that is being made in this display. The topic is sports media, but what about sports media? There is nothing controversial presented nor an argument point of view of a distain for sports media. More like, “What
Do you think media coverage of the National Football League is fair? The media has been interfering with players personal life and it is not ok. Such as the incident with Johnny Manziel, Jerry Rice, and Adrian Peterson. Johnny Manziel committed domestic violence against his girl friend, Jerry Rice punched his girlfriend, and Adrian Peterson committed child abuse. In addition to those crimes there have been many more. These issues have all dealt with law breaking, and media tells the public. This is interfering with player careers, it’s putting pressure on the NFL, and also affecting many youth football leagues. The media coverage of the NFL’s problems is not fair because the NFL has bigger problems to worry about, players are leaving teams, and parents are not letting there kids play football.
NFL teams are practicing lightly so far this year, training camp is multiple weeks away, and the first preseason game isn't going to be played for months. The new defense has not been completely installed yet and neither has the new offense. We do not know whether the special teams unit will be as effective as it has been the past several seasons because Chip Kelly's practice schedule is no longer in place to provide extra reps and the overall depth chart isn't even being considered at this point because players are currently sporting shorts and t-shirts on the field.
Sports are a big part of American society. There are different sports teams for different ages and skill levels. Sports have the potential to unite people, and members of a sports team learn how to effectively work together to accomplish goals. In regards to family unity, parents come out to see their kids play a game of soccer or football, and families and extended families come together to watch professional sports on TV. On the other hand, there are some people who do not think highly of sports. I chose Jon Entine’s Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports And Why We’re Afraid to Talk About It for my book on minority representation in media. This book embarks on a subject that very few have been willing to discuss openly in the past fifty years. Why is the typical black athlete superior to the white athlete? And why do many feel it is wrong to analyze, discuss, or even wonder about something that seems so evident? This book offers the history behind African American athletes in sports and examines the genetic revolution that follows it. Taboo also addresses the circumstances that have made human biodiversity so difficult to approach.

I love sports. From playing all kinds of sports, to watching events with family and friends, sports are a staple in my life. And when one wants to know the happenings of any athletic event, the only place to turn for all the coverage is ESPN. ESPN is one the largest news publishers in the world. What separates this network from the other news giants such as Fox, CBS and CNN is it primarily covers news around the sports world. A majority of people would recognize ESPN’s signature news program “SportsCenter”. SportsCenter is the number one sports news program in American television (Badenhausen, 2012). From elementary school buzzer-beaters, to figure skating, to the Super Bowl, if sports news happens, SportsCenter will cover it. SportsCenter has become so popular because it allows men to feel masculine by giving them an outlet of competition and the ability to act as the primal men of thousands of years ago. Where SportsCenter sometimes runs into trouble is when they cover something too much. SportsCenter has built up a reputation of being biased towards certain teams and athletes. This bias leads to questions about SportsCenter’s journalistic ethics. How SportsCenter chooses to deal with these issues directly leads to their success or failure.
Most of people believe that television news programs present biased information. On the other hand, there are people who believe that TV news just states the facts, and that it is not biased. These people who believe that TV news states the facts believe whatever they hear and see on TV.
Sports public relations is a unique and relatively new field of public relations, only having been in existence since 1919 for collegiate. Stoldt, Branvold & Dittmore (2012) noted that Notre Dame’s head coach Knute Rockne hired young Iowan Archie Ward to serve as the sport publicity for Norte Dame. Ward traveled with the team, ensuring the press coverage for all games was given to various media outlets. Ward’s work would lead to the field of sports information at the collegiate level and sports public relations at the professional level. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) was founded in 1957, giving sports public relations professionals an outlet for professional growth advancement (Stoldt, 2012, p. 129).
Being a part of the sports industry does come along with a lot of responsibilities and limitations. One of the bigger First Amendment issues in sports today involves the freedom of speech and the use of social media by student-athletes as well as monitoring and/or prohibiting the use of social media by the athletic departments. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise therefore; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the personal or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” The Fourteenth Amendment addresses the equal protection of the laws for everyone that is born or naturalized in the United States. No state has the right to deprive anyone of life and liberty. College is a place where students can communicate and express themselves in new and different ways, unless you are a student athlete at NCAA.
Arguments can be made anywhere we want them to be made. We can look at some of these arguments that we are making by examining the communities we use to make them in. Perceived in terms of context, argument is discussed in terms of the “audience” to whom it is addressed or in terms of the “community,” “field” or “sphere” in which it takes place. (McKerrow, p.27) By looking at a professional sports event I will address the audience and the community to explain the argument that is taking place. More specifically, the sports event that I will choose to analyze is an NFL game.
The use of social media in sports is a relatively new trend. Social media has enabled people to become more interactive with their favorite celebrities, athletes, and sports teams. Social media allows fan’s to keep up with their favorite teams with up to date news and it also helps the organization, specifically their marketing department. Sports teams have utilized Facebook and Twitter pages for their organizations in hopes of gaining revenue as well as the attention of their fans and casual fans. Social media is constantly evolving to keep up with the newest social trends and fads.
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
The amount of bias used within media is baffling. Going through newspaper, after newspaper, readers will run into an abundance of bias that will persuade them into thinking what the writer or publisher would like them to. Bias is so finely knitted and embedded within media it is easily distinguished In almost every newspaper, magazine, news clip or televised commercial. It is a technique highly used across the world to get the majority of a targeted group to favor one or several things.
Did you know that radio waves travel at 189,000 miles per second? Throughout its long life career, radio has always had a close relationship with sports. Today sports radio continues to be an important media in the athletic culture. Even with the giant, which is sports itself today, sports radio is still one of the most popular, reliable and convenient ways to listen to live games, hear scores, or even listen to sports talk shows. This paper will cover three big subjects that relate to sports radio and just radio itself. These subjects are history of radio, evolution of radio, and last but not least the future of the radio.
