Two thirds of the human body, including an athlete's body, is made up of water. Without water we can not live, nor would we exist. Water needs to be purified in order to be drinkable and safe for humanity. Most athlete's drink high quality purified water which promotes their hydration. Dehydration is the result of not having water in your body. This can lead to fatigue, headaches, joint pain and other uncomfortable states in the human body which would affect an athlete's performance. A human can not spend more than three days without having water, therefore an athlete that uses more water than a normal person would have a shorter period of time because of how quickly they use the water. Specialists have decided that drinking a sports drink, such as Gatorade, is better for athletes than if they ate carbs or drink sugary drinks like soda. Gatorade is a sports drink that can be used to combat dehydration in both athletes and citizens of third world countries. Gatorade was first made popular by Michael Jordan who helped it become well know in 1997. Gatorade came about when the Florida Gator Football Coach, Dwayne Douglas, was concerned for his players that were overly exhausted and passing out during football season. He made his way to the university kidney specialist, Dr. Robert Cade, to find some answers. Coach Douglas’ players were sweating off up to 18 pounds without being thirsty for water. Dr. Cade then began to make a mixture with healthy ingredients such as water, carbohydrates and electrolytes. These ingredients all helped to replace the athlete's lost fluids. It was then called “ Gator Coaches Ade”. The Gators started winning games and soon every team was drinking this sports drinks. This was the beginning of the sports drink industry. It has long been established that both short and long-term exercise increase metabolic rate and heat production. This naturally predisposes participants to dehydration. Typical symptoms of dehydration include elevated temperature, fluid and electrolyte imbalance due to sweating, and loss of critical nutrients, such as glycogen (depleted via metabolic pathways). Many individuals participating in moderate to rigorous training schedules may engage in daily exercise, if not multiple exercise routines in one day (3,4,5,6). It then follows that the goal for these individuals should be avoidance of dehydration and maximization of rehydration through maintenance of electrolyte balance, replenishment of muscle glycogen, and plasma osmolality. Thus, examination of a fluid’s efficacy in these three areas is crucial. Through extensive research, it is evident that Gatorade will rehydrate faster and more effectively than water.
To find the answer we performed an experiment. We decided to put the drinks to the test by exercising, and then seeing how well we shoot 10 free throws. But after we exercised we drank either Powerade or Gatorade. We would then collect data, analyze it, and ultimately find out which drink is more effective. When I finished working out on Day 1, I drank Gatorade. I made 8/10. On Day 2, I drank Powerade after exercising and shot 7/10. And since the results were very similar I decided I would exercise and shoot 10 more on Day 3. But instead of drinking a sports drink I just drank water. I made 7/10. This data was very interesting. It shows Gatorade improved performance more, but nothing really stood out. So unless you plan on running a marathon or other strenuous athletic tasks, it will not really matter if you drink Powerade or Gatorade. The 10 major products of the soft drink industry are produced by Pepsi and Coca-Cola in America. According, to a news post on NBC from research from 2010, of no surprise number one is Coca-Cola. Most Americans prefer Coke products over Pepsi. Number two is Diet Coke. Many people look to drink Diet Coke because it is the “healthier” version of the loved Coca-Cola. Number three is Pepsi. Next is also by PepsiCo which is Mountain Dew at number four. Dr.Pepper is number five and this is very surprising because I don’t see many people drinking it as much as all the other drinks. The soft drinks industry has evolved over the last 50 years. At the end of the fifties households were consuming more wine than any other beverages. By the beginning of the seventies households were diminishing their wine consumption for appellation wine, not to mention that strong alcohols saw a significant increase during this period with mineral water. Other soft drinks such as fruit drinks, sodas and colas became popular by the end of the eighties. How Does Doping in sport damage the sporting industry as a whole? The usage of performance-enhancing drugs in sports is commonly known as Doping. Doping is banned worldwide in every sports administration and competitions and doping gives an unfair advantage to those using illegal substances, such as steroids to boost their performance. It also puts at stake the integrity of those athletes who do not use performance-enhancing drugs also known as “clean” athletes. In fact it seems that we’re now entering the era of performance-enhancing drugs within professional sports.
