“ Sports don’t build character, they reveal it”
If sports built character then that means all athletes would have good character and be great at whatever sport they play. That is not the case because sports do not build character, they reveal it. Character is revealed by how an athlete reacts to a win and also a loss. Does the athlete disrespect the opposing team? Does he/ she give credit to his teammates and the coach? These are the different ways that an athlete may reveal their character. The character of a person is built throughout life and life’s challenges. Character is the distinct qualities of a person. These traits may consist of how they speak to someone, the way they act around certain people, and also how they respond to different events that happen. I played baseball until I was about ten years of age. During the time I played we were taught how to have good sportsmanship. Sportsmanship to me was being respectful to the opposing team regardless of what happen during the game. Even if the other team was being disrespectful and taunting me I was taught to respect them. Sometimes it is a hard thing to do, but coming from a household where my parents always taught me to have respect it made this concept easier to grasp. I believe that my family had a great impact on my character and serve as the foundation of it. From what I was taught when I was young all the way to the new things I am learning right now are a part of my character. My character was not built up through me playing a sport. It was just revealed while I was participating in sports. Once I quit sports it was not like my character stopped building. Even though I did not play sports any more the different events life threw at me caused my character to build more and more. From my personal experience sports were not a place where my character was built it was more of a place for me to show my
