In the movie Spinning Plates, we are told a story of three different chefs who have had setbacks all throughout their life. Some of them found ways to overcome them, but in the end some of them had to face the truth that their restaurant just wasn’t going to work. I feel that during my time watching the movie I realized that I identified with two of the chefs we saw on the film.
The first chef I thought I saw myself on was the head chef from Alinea. I identify with him because, I have the same sense of creativity as he does, as well as the need to do something that no one has ever done before. In the movie Grant Achatz, the head chef of Alinea, has to fight against cancer to do the thing he loves most, cook and change people’s lives. I think I also see this on me as well, that strive to do what you love no matter the circumstances. His attitude is very similar to mine on the fact that he will do anything to help his community and his family. I’m the same in the sense that my family is very important to me. Breitbach's is one of the oldest restaurants in Iowa, so to the townspeople of Balltown, Iowa, this building is more than a restaurant, to them it’s a monument and a landmark that defines the people of the town. So when the building burned down the people were devastated and no one knew what had to be done, except for Mike Breitbach. He stepped up and got the townspeople working together to build a bigger and better Breitbach’s. This motivation that Mike brings, and the leadership he has is what I strive to be someday. He is an idol to the people of his town and the would all do anything for him, and in return he would do anything for them.
