Jessica McMillan’s Speech to Congress Thank you distinguished and honorable Senators for allowing me an opportunity to speak to you today in our nation’s capital. What I am about to share is a tragedy that ends with the loss of a young women’s life. While out enjoying a beautiful sunny day in San Francisco, young and energetic Kate Steinle was tragically gunned down in broad daylight. The gunman is a repeat criminal who we have since found out is an illegal immigrant that has been deported 5 times and had 7 felony convictions. We cannot bring Kate back but we can pass a law that will protect others from another senseless tragedy like this. The bill I am referring to was originally presented by Senator Ted Cruz, Republican Senator from …show more content…
It seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act so that undocumented aliens who are deported and then return to the United States, receive a mandatory 5 year sentence in a federal prison if convicted. In simple terms, it imposes harsher penalties for repeat immigration violations. Currently the penalty may only be a fine or a maximum of 2 years in prison. Does anyone this that is an effective deterrent to an illegal criminal? The bill seeks to increase the prison sentence to a 5 year mandatory minimum prison term for an illegal that reenters after being removed following a conviction for an aggravated felony or following 2 or more prior convictions for illegal reentry. The penalty can increase to a 10 year maximum prison term for an illegal that reenters after being denied admission or deported on 3 or more prior …show more content…
citizens. It allows the U.S. to take control of its border and leads to enhanced border security. Illegals return now because there is no significant penalty. A mandatory minimum sentence would make illegals less likely to re-enter the country because they know they will not just be dropped back off across the border in the home country, but will face the loss of freedom for themselves and any hope of future freedom in the
Ann Richards’s keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1988 was extremely interesting to watch. I believe her speech was intended to be focused on the American family and also the American farmers. These two areas seemed to be very important to Mrs. Richards and she made a point to discuss both.
Being a servant to your baby, copying your child’s emotions,or taking your baby’s food, pretty normal right? Not, that was verbal irony, which Mark Twain’s “Speech On the Babies” and “Me Time” by Tina Fey both have through the use sarcastic situations, humorous scenarios, and over exaggerating things that come with being a parent.
In this paper I am going to discuss the rhetorical appeals, as well as the argumentative structure, audience and purpose set forth by George W. Bush in his September 27 speech in Flagstaff, Arizona. More specifically I will refer to the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos and logos, and explain how they are used to gain the support and attention of the audience and further the further the purpose of the speech. As I explain these appeals I will also give an insight into the argumentative structure and why it is apparent in this particular speech.
We Shall Overcome Rhetorical Analyses Throughout the history of the United States, racial discrimination has always been around our society. Many civil rights movements and laws have helped to minimize the amount of discrimination towards every single citizen, but discrimination is something that will not ever disappear. On March 15, 1965, Lyndon Baines Johnson gave a speech that pointed out the racial injustice and human rights problems of America in Washington D.C. He wanted every citizen of the United States to support his ideas to overcome and solve the racial injustice problems as a nation. Throughout the speech, Lyndon Johnson used several rhetorical concepts to persuade the audience.
Currently, there are 11.7 million undocumented immigrants in the United States; 6 million of those immigrants are Mexican-born (Preston). Within that undocumented population are individuals who were brought to the States as children. These individuals have grown up in the American culture and consider themselves American, but struggle with being treated as second class citizens due to their undocumented status. On June fifteenth of 2012, the Obama Administration announced the executive order Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This order will allow immigrants who were brought illegally to the U.S. as children to apply for work permits and avoid deportation (Hennessey and Bennett). President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is not only beneficial to it applicants but also to the United States as a whole.
President Barack Obama has been a well-known political figure for just over 8 years; he has served two terms as the President of the United States. There has been controversy surrounding the first African American president, after his first term Obama failed to prove to America that he would fix all the things he promised to fix upon election. With his second term he has set in place his views and goals for the country. Obama’s views have been trying to benefit the overall population of American, from the poor all the way to the rich with a few subclasses in-between. During the Inauguration of his second term, won against Mitt Romney. His opponent stood for many things that were conflicting to Obamas platform, while Obama stood for rehabilitating the poor after the recession, Romney wanted to focus on tax breaks for the rich. Throughout the speech given by President Barack Obama, he outlines necessary changes in the system to benefit the people and the need for people to come together as one to have an effective country.
The Sate of Address is a yearly address delivered in January by the president of the US to Congress, giving the administration 's view of the state of the nation and plans for legislation. In President Obama’s 2016 Sate of Address, his purpose was to inform Americans about his vision for the remainder of his term. He conveys this message by using a relatable and concerning tone, which allowed his readers to connect to the ideas he had proposed. Also, during his speech, President Obama’s chose topics that spoke to every gender, race, and social class. For example, President Obama said “First, how do we give everyone a fair shot at opportunity and security in this new economy? Second, how do we make technology work for us, and not against us especially when it comes when it comes to solving urgent
The speech given by Mr. President Deals with the consequences of violent actions and it raises questions of morality. It is an attempt to guide the American people through their hard times and motivating them.
President Obama’s Inaugural Speech: Rhetorical Analysis. Barrack Obama’s inauguration speech successfully accomplished his goal by using rhetoric to ensure our nation that we will be in safe hands. The speech is similar to ideas obtained from the founding documents and Martin Luther King’s speech to establish ‘our’ goal to get together and take some action on the problems our country is now facing. As President Barack Obama starts his speech, he keeps himself from using ‘me’, ‘myself’, and ‘I’ and replacing it with ‘we’, ‘us’, and ‘together’ to achieve his ethos.
The lives of millions of immigrants are affected everyday due to limited access to acquiring legal citizenship. Out of that group there are 2.1 million children and young adults under the age of 18 that are eligible for permanent citizenship at this time (The DREAM Act). In 2001 Dick Durbin and Orrin Hatch presented a Development Relief and Education of Alien Minors (DREAM) Act that provides a path to becoming a legal citizen. The DREAM Act has yet to be passed, but there is a temporary Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)(The DREAM Act). The DREAM Act will provide options and opportunities for people to continue their path of life in America. The DREAM Act should be passed as it will benefit our economy, positively affect and strengthen our military, along with increased access to education.
Dr. Ron Paul is a twelve term congressman who has witnessed many of our illegal occupations and bombing campaigns throughout the years. He realizes our interventionist foreign policy results in blowback. Blowback, as coined by the FBI, is the unintended adverse consequences of secret operations. When this happens, the American people are left confused and often believe they are hated for their way of life. Over the last 70 years, Dr. Paul has witnessed and spoken out against the military industrial complex fueled by illegal wars, military intervention, extortion, and the lack of constitutionality exhibited by his contemporaries and the administrations. Dr. Paul knows there is no debating that we now have an empire. This isn’t a question of what countries we have invaded, but rather a question of the ones we have not.
For over ten years, efforts to make changes to the United States immigration system have been put aside due to wars, attacks within our homeland and even worldwide financial crisis but it seems as though this being brought up more and more often. The history of the US immigration policy was more concerned with immigration enforcement over immigration reform. It was not until a few years ago that the US citizens voted they were tired of enforcement-only immigration policies and the pain they caused on immigrant families. So most feel now is the time to draw up new immigration laws that reflect American values and beliefs, and it ne...
Each year in late spring thousands of young students are graduating from high school and are looking forward to begin college. Most students have chosen what college they are going to, have packed and are ready to go and accomplish their dreams. However, there are thousands of students that graduate each year, that have dreams as big as their classmates and will never know what it is like to attend to a college or even visit a college campus. But they have hope that their dreams can be accomplish by passing the Dream Act. There are many reasons why this law should be pass not only would it improve the economy by creating new jobs, but it will help undocumented students accomplish their dreams, and show what a great nation the Unites States is.
Senate Bill 1070 is a law created in Arizona to reduce the amount of immigrants.Every time a police pulls over someone ,in the state that uses a law like this, they have to check their US Citizenship and make sure that they are legal citizens. If the person that gets pulled over is not a US citizen, they will get shipped back to the country they are from. In my opinion the law is good. Less untrustworthy people will be in America. Most of the illegal immigrants that cross over to the United States are unprofessional that take the jobs of poor people that are citizens and creating poverty. Illegal immigrants also abuse the United States. The US gives people money that have little money and expect to get money back in taxes. Most immigrants that are illegal don’t care about the US government, but only want money so they don’t pay taxes back to the US.
President Obama’s Address to the nation was presented on January 5, 2016. His speech was shown on all of the major network stations. The main goal of his speech was to get the point across to the nation about the increasing problem of gun use. His speech really focused on the issue of gun control and if it would benefit the country. Overall, the biggest idea of his Address was that gun control is a large issue in the United States. The way to prevent deaths caused by firearms can be prevented in other ways than taking peoples guns away. The examples brought up in this Address really stood out to me. The use of personal, national, and global examples really made his speech stronger on the topic of effectiveness.
