Personally, I have never been nervous to speak in public, especially not in front of my peers, and that was a good advantage for me in this class. Not only that, but this class allowed me to show the different ways to express my arguments as well as inform my fellow classmates about topics that matter to me and affect me personally. I always choose a topic that I could relate to and had importance to me or else it would have been difficult to give a speech about something that I didn’t care about and had no in-depth knowledge to captivate my audience and make them thing differently after listening to my speech. One of the speeches in which I used this strategy is the informative speech I gave about immigration in the United States. To give that speech it was important to give reliable statistics from well-known sources to captivate the audience attention to the problems the country is facing. The problem I noticed every time one of my speeches was graded is that the problems I had were similar and although I would try to correct them, it was easier to just back to the usual and just lose those points. I wish I would have taken fixing certain aspects of my speech giving abilities and make sure the only mistakes I made where in my argumentation and not on my posture, tone, or accent. After reviewing my speeches back to back, I realized that my public speaking skills have evolved dramatically. While I would like to have changes to my projects if I had the ability to time travel, but overall I am more than satisfied with my progression in public speaking. My level of listenability is still not flawless, but with some more practice and time I am confident that I could become a decent public speaker. Whether I will do anything as a public speaker is yet to be determined, but I do know that I walked into this class with the simple expectation to acquire my honor credits, but was fortunate enough to part with experience that will be applied to the rest of both my academic and occupational careers.

Each rhetorical strategy has helped me realize how much more knowledge I will walk away with from this class. When learning about ways to arrange an argument, the subtopics of process and problem-solution have seemed to help me that greatest amount. When giving a pitch for my business class, I arranged it in a type of process and ended it with a problem-solution. The way that an argument is arranged can make or break an argument. After learning tips on arrangement, my arguments have become stronger because there is organization. Learning strategies of persuasion have helped me to get inside my opponent’s head and persuade them in a more organized manner. Using things like description and cause and effect and helped me to lay out the core of my argument to make it easier for me to persuade. Rhetorical appeals can be helpful in any environment when speaking or writing. Pathos helps engage emotions of others so they can put themselves in your place and really feel for me when I am trying to prove a point. Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
It is important to be organized in this class in order to keep track of all the speeches and to organize a time span where you can practice your speech. On the other hand, I feel it is important to find your speaking style because that way you can adjust your speech with the way you speak. For example, I tend to speak very fast so, I like to create speeches that flow with the speed of my communication. One of the most important things in this class is to attend. Student have to attend this class because there are various opportunities to learn how to improve their skills and to observe other forms of communications by their fellow classmates. Lastly, the main foundation for any good speech is to create many drafts for your speeches. For any future oral communication students to succeed in this course, I would recommend to simple practice. A phrase that is often times very repeated but, it is very important for an oral communication class. At first I thought I would never make it to be a motivational speaker. However, this class has really altered the perception and understanding about me as a public speaker. It has enabled me discover the potential I had in this field. At the commencement of my classes in public speaking, I thought I would be a boring public speaker, less convincing, less persuasive and would freak out if asked to offer an impromptu speech. But it has come to my light that in fact this is the field where I would want to pursue my career in, it is the field that my dream lies in.
