How Eating Healthy Can Save Your Life Eating healthy is important. There is a wide variety of reasons why, but I am going to inform you in the three main reasons such as disease prevention, weight management, and mood/cognition and energy. These reasons will make you second guess your eating habits and will help you improve a healthy lifestyle. First of all, because it helps prevent diseases. Remember when you were a kid or even a college student and your parents always told you that you need to eat breakfast? Now try to go back to the day when you did eat breakfast in the morning; were you more energized and productive? Food has a direct impact on our cognitive performance, which is why a poor decision at meal time can derail an entire afternoon. Almost everything that we eat is converted by our body into glucose, which provides our brain with the energy it needs to stay alert. When we are running low on glucose, we struggle to stay focused. This is why it’s hard to stay concentrated on an empty stomach. Not all foods are processed at the same rate in our bodies. Certain foods like pasta, cereal, bread, and soda, release their glucose quickly, which leads to a burst of energy. However, foods like a cheeseburger, fries, and BLT provide sustained energy, but requires our digestive system to work harder, making the oxygen levels in the brain lower and makes you feel groggy. So what makes us choose the wrong choices for meals? When you 're in a hurry, mentally drained, or short for money it seems as if it is just easier to get foods like a cheeseburger and fries instead of a salad and fruit. Whatever your choice is it will have an affect to the rest of your day. According to Web MD Health Foundation “Healthy eating starts with learning new and healthy ways to eat that provide right balance of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.” Healthy eating provides an individual with plenty of energy and be able to manage daily activities, handle stress, prevent and control diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and many others. This diet analysis project provided awareness about calories, nutrients, energy needs and balance to me.
As a typical college student, I suffer from daily stresses, lack of sleep and lack of a proper diet. I have pulled countless all nighters; my body and brain fueled only by coffee, chocolate and pizza, in order finish a paper or study for an exam. As a result, I may have done better on the paper or test, but I was being very unkind to my body and brain. In terms of nutrition, it is important to think of the brain as just another organ in the body. The food and other substances we put into our bodies affect our behavior, mood, thoughts and emotions. The brain responds very quickly to proper nutrition. However, as a college student who dines daily in the dining hall, I most likely do not get the nutrients needed to maximize my brain potential. In this paper, I'm going to take you through a day of brain friendly meals and explain why our brains and bodies need more than coffee, chocolate and pizza to thrive and survive.
I. Introduction: You’ve probably heard it a million times that obesity is an issue on the rise in America. Well, why if everyone knows that it is a problem is nothing being done to fix it? I’m here to propose a solution to this problem affecting over a third of the adult American Population.
Have you ever had those moments where you are feeling unmotivated or zero energy to workout? I will be the first to tell you I have had these moments. Being involved in the fitness world, I love every aspect of fitness. For the past 5 years, I was working out 5 days a week and had my ups and downs with results. I am guilty of it, I would pick up a workout magazine and try out this crazy workout and just destroy my body. Sure, I saw some results but I was becoming more and more tired throughout the day. On top of that, I was only getting 5 hours of sleep and not eating appropriately to refuel my body. I know stupid right? I am human and I am not perfect!
