As he lays there on a stretcher gasping for air, he looks up at the nurse who is assessing his airway and secures his neck. As the nurse looked down at the man – covered in blood, the clothes cut away, broken bones, with machines connected to him. His heart begins to beat again because of that well educated nurse, who never gave up hope. She saved his life. That nurse in the nursing home watches the patient she known of six years, decline. She started to love them, as she witnesses them die. Becoming a nurse isn’t just a job or a career choice. It’s an opportunity to save the life’s of others, to put someone else’s needs before your own, to become a hero in someone’s eyes. Most days begin before the first rays of sunlight hit the sky. You must be passionate about doing whatever it takes to help someone. A nurse must remain patient and be understanding of every situation thrown at them. In nursing, the days are never the same, so you must adjust yourself to every situation given and take it the best way you can. Not to mention the fact you must care about people. You will have to put someone else’s needs before your own, requiring you to sacrifice your opinions. Being well organized also helps, you don’t want to be in the middle of a medication pass and misplace something. The nurse has six hours before she reports back on the floor to start another long, stressful day. Her compassion shared with her patients sends her deep joy. She becomes attached to these people. “Who ever said you can’t become close to your patients, didn’t have a heart. It’s almost impossible”. Gail smiled at me. The shifts aren’t easy and your piled up with task you must complete. The reward, however beats it all. Nothing is more rewarding than putting someone else’s life before your own.
