Today you woke up in a bed, you took a warm shower, brushed your teeth, than complained because the mint from your tooth paste and the orange juice you just drank did not mix well. You decide to not finish the orange juice and pick at your pancakes your wife made you, complaining she didn’t put enough blue berries and your daughter used all the syrup. You decide it’s going to be a rough day considering how it has already started. Mint orange juice and blueberry less pancakes with no syrup. Now while these are big frustrations to half the world population, the other three billion people have way bigger concerns in their morning routine. This is one of the first statistics I came across when I googled “poverty statistics” and I was in complete utter shock. Poverty is something we are all aware of. However, the extent of the world’s poverty is heartbreaking. It’s not hundreds, or thousands, its billions. Billions of people don’t have a place to sleep, access to clean water, an education or a nutritious meal. Living in America it is easy to put this issue in the back of our mind. Although poverty hasn’t seen much improvement in the last few years that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to lessen this number. Poverty is not something that only affects the individual who is poor, it affects us all as a society. Money is the root of all evil is a popular saying but is that indeed true? Is it money that is the root of all evil or is being broke the root of all evil? Poverty and crime go hand in hand. Not only does poverty go hand in hand with crime but it brings other issues as well, such as, alcohol and substance abuse, diseases, and more poverty. In order to obtain a job, you need to have certain skills, which a lot are impossible to have without an education. Skills are the key way in which education reduces poverty. Education makes it more likely for men and women not just to be employed, but to hold jobs that are more secure and provide good working conditions and decent pay. In so doing, education can not only help lift households out of poverty, but also guard against them falling or falling back into poverty. Right now, sixty-two million girls worldwide are not in school. In recent news, Michelle Obama has played a big part in making sure that this is something that is changed. Let Girls Learn is a program working towards giving girls the opportunity for education. Education is important because it is the future. Without the basic skills to read and write it is hard for children to have an equal opportunity. Not only do we need to get our children to be in school, we need to make sure while they are there that they are learning the basic skills, such as, reading, writing and math. Therefore, we need to fix the quality of education children are receiving by making sure our teachers are properly trained and making the school environment doesn’t resemble a jail environment. Although some standardization is needed, there is too much in the current school
