A nurse can use their skills and knowledge to maximize the health of a family by providing guidance that will encourage families to value the benefits of health promotion into their daily lives (Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson, 2015). Positive life changes occur when one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are guided along a pathway that leads to success and accomplishment. This discussion post will explain the major point of the family meal and healthier eating. Specific nursing interventions will help a family that is in need of developing and practicing health-promoting practices. Often in today’s society, both parents are required to work full time to meet the needs of and …show more content…
Eating meals together as a family will encourage an environment that not only promotes healthier eating, but also allows time for family, for communication, nurturing family traditions, and their children learn life skills (Kaakinen et al., 2015). I will assist and encourage this family to find the time to shop, prepare, and eat together meals that are nutritious as well as healthy. Information and guidance would be provided to help the family understand the daily nutritional requirements of not only themselves, but also for their children. This family would need to take the initiative to learn the nutritional contents of food and be able to incorporate it into meals that provide these daily requirements. There are many Internet sources such as, www.USDA.gov, www.eatright.org, www.letsmove.org, and www.choosemyplate.gov that provides tips, guidance, and recipes that will help families develop healthier eating habits (Ogata & Hayes,
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). A Licensed Practical Nurse has various of roles that they have to manage on a day to day basis, such as being an advocate for their patients, an educator, being a counselor, a consultant, researcher, collaborator, and even a manager depending on what kind of work exactly that you do and where. It is the nursing process and critical thinking that separate the LPN from the unlicensed assistive personnel. Judgments are based
Low incomes can contribute to families not being able to meet their nutritional needs — impacting the quality and the quantity of food available for parents and children (First Call, 2015). First call goes on to explain that, often parents will forgo their own nutritional requirements in an effort to ensure their children have enough food. Additionally, researchers in the United Kingdom found that low income, as well as, family dynamics have a profound influence on what a family eats. Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
There is no surprise that food is important in all aspects of our lives—it is shared amongst families, celebrated as a major part of our culture, and crucial to our daily routine that keeps us fit, healthy, and active. Today’s western culture glorifies a skewed perspective on how food is supposed to fit into our lives. Somehow this perception has led us to believe we no longer have the time or money it takes to prepare a wholesome, healthy meal that is shared at the dinner table with family. Instead, we are trained to want a meal that is fast, cheap, and easy. This meal is usually highly processed and filled with sugars and fats. This has led us to a problem of epidemic proportions characterized by the rapid increase in obesity and diabetes.

Some benefits of cooking at home are you can control what ingredients you use when cooking, and portion control. An up to date study on obesity shows nearly 15 percent of U.S children and roughly one-third adults are obese (Holguin, 1). Families that eat fast foods these same foods are high in fats, sugars, carbohydrates and these eating habits will eventually lead to obesity. Everyone has to be responsible for their own actions, but when it comes to children they will eat whatever the parents’ puts in front of them. It is up to parents to lay the foundation of healthy eating habits at an early age. If fast food restaurants did not exist then obesity should be less of a threat to our health. Obesity is harmful to our health as we just addressed, but it can be huge burden on our pocket book when it comes time to look for insurance
Time is an issue with families, whether its work, school, or sports. Sometimes people go from activity to activity right after school. Between activities, there is usually not enough time to go home and cook a healthy meal, so they resort to fast food. Research by Helen Lawson (2013) showed that only one in six mothers cook a h...
In the works, “Double Daddy” by Penny Parker, “Diary of a Mad Blender” by Sue Shellenbarger, and “The Child’s View of Working Parents” by Cora Daniels and Ellen Galinksy, the writers inform us that families are struggling to recognize and prioritize the importance expense of efficiently spending quality time with loved ones. The writers explain what troubles they get into with unbalanced responsibilities, goals, and personal life and how they overcome these problems, but often claim that businesses neglect the important factor of family, and inform how hard parents struggle to achieve and balance time. Both parents, including fathers, feel that they should be there when their child is sick, but society doesn’t see fathers as care-takers and say it’s the mothers’ job. The ideology of family bonding is very important and varies among cultural traditions and nationalities. Some parents have a great dilemma bonding with their children or keeping track of time with work and personal life.

Having had a mother that was a hard worker, it was instilled in my siblings and me at an early age that some parents has to work to earn a living. Being that we were brought up in a single parent home where there was a lot of sisters and brothers, it was imperative that my mother obtained employed in order for her to support the family. Many women must work to support their family because the male counterparts are absent from the home, or if they are there they do the bare minimum. Therefore; being a working parent has its ups and downs. In this paper I will discuss ways parents can work and still run the home.
Without my sister, I would not have been in the success boat I am today. She taught me about over-eating, macro- counting, and meal preps. This impacted me greatly because even though my sister and I never saw eye to eye on food options, I finally understood why she did what she did. Something I had never taken interest in before was grocery shopping and now we bond over it. Beneficial points to creating a healthy lifestyle include healthy hearts, prevention of type two diabetes, strong bones, and weight control (“Health benefits”). Unfortunately with American society, healthier foods are more expensive along with more fattening. Americans obesity rates top every other country in the world. It has become culture to get what’s convenient with our everyday schedules. With growing numbers in obesity, it is important to influence the people around us to take minor steps toward a healthy lifestyle. It is true, if you eat hot dogs every day you will become just as fatty as the food you consume. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be pure veggies and that’s what many don’t understand. Branching off into different food groups and watching how much you consume can really make the difference. It doesn’t take much to substitute dressing on the side of salads instead of drowning them, completely taking the nutritional value away. With that being said, just one perspective can change the mindset of thousands of
