In Chapter 5 we discussed how athletes are starting to become specialized athletes at such a young age. I am 100% against this idea. I think that all kids no matter who they are should have the opportunity to broaden their horizon in the athletic field as much as possible. Whether that is trying out a new sport in middle school or high school, I think the more you participate in other sports the more it will help an athlete down the road in their “favorite” sport they would like to pursue after high school. Specializing has started to become relevant to the sport of wrestling.
I started wrestling when I was five or six years old. I would go to a little kids practice every Tuesday night and roll around with my buddies. While growing up I could

There was one kid, when I was younger and wrestling, that you didn’t want to have in your bracket at any tournament. He was stronger then everyone, had more technique, and was just downright better then everyone within 2 years of his age. This kid was a multiple time AAU state champ and won nationals multiple times as well. He wrestled all year round for as long as I can remember until he got to high school. In high school he finally decided to try another sport, football, and tore his ACL. After recovering from that ACL injury he decided to just focus on wrestling because football had created this injury for him. The very next season he rushed into wrestling too quick and tore his ACL again because he still wanted to have the chance to become a 3 time state champ, which very well could have happened. After recovering from that ACL tear, the following year decided to wait until conference and the post season, “when it counted” to wrestle. With having very minimal mat time against different opponents besides the guys on his team, he lost at sectionals and never made it to state. In my eyes if this athlete would have competed in multiple sports growing up instead of just focusing on wrestling, these injuries may not have happened. With football he could have built those muscles up in his knees to help prevent his ACL from
I have many things that I love in this life, one of those things is wrestling. I have been wrestling for seven years and I have developed quite the passion and love for it. Wrestling has always been an interesting sport for me. Growing up in Oregon I watched my uncles wrestle in high school. I watched both of them win their state tournament in their respective weight classes, this is one of my fondest memories of my childhood. One of them went on to wrestle division one, I thought this was the coolest thing in the world. I looked up to my uncles and wanted to be just like them. I did not always wrestle though. The process of pursing my dream as of becoming a wrestler started of with basketball, then went to a rocky start, then being on Worland High School wrestling team.

I started wrestling when I was eight years old and since then it has taken me all over the world. I had the opportunity to compete in Beijing, China. I learned that the Chinese team was only able to continue their education for a brighter future thanks to the sport of wrestling. Thanks to my involvement in wrestling, I was able to attend and graduate from Penn State University.
Wrestling is more than just a sport; it is a way of life. And for those who enjoy its opportunities, it is something that takes the mind off of all of life’s troubling times, and puts one man against another to get their hand raised. Competition makes everything evolve, and there is no other sport that epitomizes what competition truly is. Wrestling spans the entire globe, and although it incorporates several different styles and many National and World events, remains overlooked by most.
Why do female athletes receive less media coverage than male athletes? Male athletes dominate professional sport that airs on television. The media easily overlooks female athletes except during occasion like the Winter Olympics. The articles Media Coverage of Women’s Sports is Important (Lopiano, 2008) and Take Back the Sports Page? (Sommers, 2010) acknowledge factors that determine the amount of media coverage female athletes receive. [Lopiano and Sommers address this issue in regards to media coverage on female athletes differently. Lopiano focuses on the general message the media broadcasts and Sommers uses statistics to show the difference between female and male media. Lopiano and Sommers agree that the media considers female sports less valid. Both focus on different aspects such as problem and solutions and the different consequences of unequal media coverage]. The authors discover similar as well as different factors that contribute to the inequality media coverage of both female and male athletes obtain.
Gymnasts are more vulnerable to the onset of distorted eating than other teenagers in society, due to the very nature of what makes for athletic success in the sport. Gymnasts’ bodies have to be young, healthy, petite and muscular, therefore they have to do large amounts of conditioning and eat the proper amounts and type of food. The main factor to gymnasts being vulnerable to distorted eating is because they are at very young ages when they excel in the sport. Gymnastics is structured around young fit bodies, so these athletes are facing a lot of pure pressure and big decisions at young ages. They may start to restrict their diet because, in the sport, it is expected for them to have petite and fit bodies and they are receiving pressure from their coaches and others opinions. A Canadian study of youth gymnasts at an average age of 13.4 years old, reported that 10.5% saw themselves as overweight, 27% were worried about the way they looked and 39% reported dieting behaviors (momsteen.com). When gymnasts restrict their food intake it will not enhance their performance, instead it will harm it because of their weakened bodies condition. They decide to reduce their food intake because of what their body, as a gymnast, is supposed to look like. With the average age of gymnasts being 13.4 years old, they are at the age where it is very easy to feel insecure about their body due to others around them, but it is very unhealthy for high-level gymnasts to not be fueling their body with the proper foods thy need. The sports nature also plays a large role in how far the athletes will go for success. Gymnastics is a very involving sport that requires very long training hours for the young athletes. The proper amount of training hours for the ...
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
There are many things to look at on both sides all good and bad effects. “Nowadays, there is a trend for early specialization in a single sport or even a single position. We see year-round participation in baseball, soccer, basketball, and hockey. Athletes like Michael Phelps and Mia Hamm both began competitive careers well before puberty.” (UVM Medical Center 1). “Supporters of specialization in a single sport state the early participation in that sport will increase skills and help one develop in his or her sport better than other athletes participating in multiple sports.” (UVM Medical Center 1). People feel they will do better in their sport if they play only one . Also they feel will be able to make it farther that athletes playing multiple sports. For being good and making a team specialization in one sport may be a good
Sports specialization among young people is when a child or teenager trains for and competes in only one sport. They work extremely hard year-round in order to become well-rounded in every aspect of the game. They make sacrifices and put their health in jeopardy in order to become the ultimate participant in their sport. One of the many young athletes who is only participating in and focusing on one sport is fifteen-year-old OJ Mayo from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the young talented athlete who is predicted to be the next LeBron James in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This young athlete provides evidence of striving for perfection in this single sport when reviewing his daily schedule versus that of his siblings. He says, “The other kids go home and sleep. I come back to the gym” (Thompson, 2004). He is obviously putting forth a lot of effort in his sport to become successful at an early age.
Wrestling is a great sport to better yourself and earn a bunch of awards and titles to look back on later on in life. It 's something i will never forget and cherish always. But the memories of losing all the weight and making myself miserable for all those seasons is something i will not miss. People around me were only worried about the medals i had gotten and not about my personal being, that 's where wrestling goes wrong. That 's what needs to change in the future for not only wrestlers but the people around them as well.
Wrestling has grown to extensive amounts since it’s infancy. It has become one of the most organized and planned out sports in our Olympics, with some of the worlds most committed and die-hard fans to enter a stadium. Wrestling is still practiced almost everywhere in the world, whether it be in one of it’s more traditional forms, or the more modern one.
When I was a Freshman, I was curious about the sport of Wrestling. When I tried out for it, I was eager to learn more about it. Sports psychology is the study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance, exercise and physical activity. Some sports psychologists work with professional athletes and coaches to improve performance and increase motivation. Other professionals use exercise and sports to enhance people’s lives and well-being. While finding ways to help athletes is certainly an important part of sports psychology, the application of exercise and physical activity for improving the lives of non-athletes is also a major focus.
The Olympic Games were a sporting contest that are likely to have started in 776 BC. They were held every four years (every Olympiad) in Olympia, originally lasting one day but by their ban in 393 AD they could span for up to five days. As to their origin, there are many different theories that have been discussed by historians – ideas ranging from King Iphitos of Elis asking the Oracle how to end civil wars, to entertainment for the newborn Zeus – either way, the Games seem to have started for other purposes (namely religious or political purposes) as opposed to ‘just for fun’.
