Special occasion speeches are a form of communication in which a speaker is trying to entertain, celebrate, commemorate, inspire, or set a social agenda when addressing the audience. Speeches that entertain are usually light hearted and amusing, while celebratory speeches might praise an object or person. Similarly, when you commemorate someone you offer a remembrance or tribute. Finally, when trying to inspire or set an agenda then a speaker would use examples of achievements as well as reinforcement of goals. No matter which one of the above a speaker chooses to use, there are effective techniques, such as scripting, the style of delivery, and special effects, which allow the overall reception of the message more concise and effective. This captivated the audience by making everybody enter a more serious and emotional state thinking the eulogy was about a real person, but it resulted it was a eulogy for Summer 2015. The use of words throughout her speech and her many anecdotes of stuff she’s done personified Summer 2015 and surprised the audience once she revealed who the real eulogy was for. This was an effective technique of scriptwriting because you could tell she really put thought into trying to personify Summer 2015 and making the audience believe it was a serious eulogy. This helped captivate the audience throughout the entire speech and then left everyone with a sense of relief and surprise when the true identity of the deceased was revealed. I can implore and take advantage of this technique in other speeches because it allows for a light-hearted approach at something that is customarily very serious and grim. For example, Meghan used a wide of array of pictures that showed her and her sister’s comical moments growing up and how it strengthened their friendship. Furthermore, she told personal anecdotes and connections with regards to the picture. Similarly, she also used a picture of a wedding couple and photo shopped Ben and her sister’s face in it. I believed this was comedic and helped add a light-hearted approach to the wedding toast. Another good visual and special effect that she applied was the use of grape (soda?) as being symbolic for a bottle of champagne while making the toast. This added to the overall setting of being at a wedding while also captivating the attention and replenishing the thirst of the audience. I think I could use these techniques in similar occasions that deal with close family, friends, and relatives and I am close to the person who I am commemorating or celebrating. For example, a wedding, an engagement party, or even a graduation. The use of photos allows a visual portrait, followed by verbal anecdotes and descriptions that allow the audience to get a better understanding of the relationship being described. Her choice of words and the aura they create demonstrate the transition from a seemingly jovial occasion, to a tense and uncomfortable reaction. “The Birthday Party” takes a seemingly normal couple and uncovers the troubles that lay just beneath the surface.
In "The Birthday Party" by Katherine Brush, the author uses literary devices such as imagery, point of view, and mood/tone in order to get her point across and achieve her purpose. These devices drive the story and control the smooth flow of the changing atmosphere in a way that is understandable and flowing.
By her pinpointing certain memories and tying it back with music shows the audience how all throughout her life music was something that she carried with her, it was like one of her priority.
