The third part out of the eight that the novel talks about is “Special College Writing Projects”. First they talk about writing under pressure which includes tests and Essay Exams. Susan Gives you tips on studying, Test-Taking strategies and answering an Essay Question. The next section this part talks about is Finding and Evaluating Outside Sources. This book helps you on how to find and evaluate Sources for you topic. They go through all of the steps on reaching success. They help with Making a Schedule, Choosing a Topic, Avoiding Plagiarism, Writing a Thesis Statement, making an Outline, Writing the Essay, and last but not least Citing and Documenting Your Sources. This book does a great job at showing you examples of citations and how to
cite them in the MLA In-Text citation format. They help you revise and edit your essay and show sample student research essays.
She then cites sections of the book she might have used in parenthesis after each piece of evidence. At the end of her paper, Peterson includes a “Works Cited” page, which lists seven references she used. By using this page, Peterson allows us, as readers, to understand and analyze her evidences as well as how reliable they might be. Her personal experience serves as evidence as well, and is extremely detailed—describing all parts of her struggle in depth. Peterson’s evidences also relates to her thesis.

Allen Frances spends his time concluding his thoughts about the DSM and diagnostic inflation in the third part of “Saving Normal”. Frances appears to be passionate about reducing over-diagnosing and unnecessary medication. Frances did a good job providing us with ways that can change the future of diagnosis. Having a complete culture change will be difficult, but we can begin by educating ourselves.
Although the greater picture is that reading is fundamental, the two authors have a few different messages that they seek to communicate to their audiences. “The Joy of Reading and Writing” depicts how reading serves as a mechanism to escape the preconceived notions that constrain several groups of people from establishing themselves and achieving success in their lifetimes. “Reading to Write,” on the other hand, offers a valuable advice to aspiring writers. The author suggests that one has to read, read, and read before he or she can become a writer. Moreover, he holds an interesting opinion concerning mediocre writing. He says, “Every book you pick has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (p.221). Although these two essays differ in their contents and messages, the authors use the same rhetorical mode to write their essays. Both are process analyses, meaning that they develop their main argument and provide justification for it step by step. By employing this technique, the two authors create essays that are thoughtful, well supported, and easy to understand. In addition, Alexie and King both add a little personal touch to their writings as they include personal anecdotes. This has the effect of providing support for their arguments. In this chapter, Oswalt deals with ethics in the nonbiblical ANE and ethics in the Bible. Oswalt discusses ethical misbehavior and the offenses against the gods and the offenses against other human beings and how they are two of different natures. Oswalt notes that the offenses against the god are almost entirely in the cultic or magical realms; while the offenses against humans is of different sort – and that they have nothing to do with our treatment of each other, and the offenses against humans are judged solely based on the customary behavior of a culture. Will, based on your above post I think you have a good grasp on citing, finding good resources, and plagiarizing. By re-reading the book I also found the rhetorical situation chapter very helpful. When writing I ask myself specific questions based on the rhetorical situations to help me stay on topic within my area of research and writing. I also try to find resources that correlate with my rhetorical situations, so that I am finding information that correctly relates to my topic. As you also stated, I try to use sources from sites ending in “.gov” or “.edu” so that I know the sources are reliable. Another good point you made was to write all the sources you use so that you can easily revisit them or cite them. I instead like to add sources

Every English 111 textbook should consist of three main things: the proper way to write an academic essay, review of proper grammar, mechanics word usage and a short transition chapter of the difference between writing in high school and college writing. Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter has many of the essentials but noticed it lacked examples of a noble essay. All throughout class students critiqued essays but never actually saw an example of a good, noteworthy complete essay. Having examples of what a person shouldn’t do in an essay is always beneficial but should be followed by a precise academic essay. How are the student supposed to improve their academic writing skills if they have nothing to go by? Just because the book lacks a few of the basic essentials doesn’t mean the book itself will not be beneficial in any way. The book as a whole is pleasing but still has room for revisions.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
