On February 7, 1985 Special Agent Enrique Camarena of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (US/DEA) was abducted near the Unites States Consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico. Primer Comandante Armando Pavon Reyes of the Mexican Federal Judicial Police (MFJP) was put in charge of the massive investigation that would follow. To that date this investigation was one of the largest conducted by the DEA and one of the most extensive cases to be processed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory. The investigators faced numerous challenges and hurdles while conducting this investigation. One of the first challenges that was faced by the investigators in the investigation was U.S. and Mexican government’s request for case status along with the demands for the investigation get done quickly. The government involvement actually began to directly involve them in the investigation. The concern arose due to the amount of corruption within the Mexican Federal Judicial Police (MFJP) which included Primer Comandante Armando Pavon Reyes. The result of the pressure from government involvement coupled by corruption within the MFJP was a plan developed by members of the Guadalajara cartel and corrupt Mexican government officials that were allegiant to the cartel. …show more content…

This was to occur by the planting of the body of Camarena at a ranch belonging to the rival gang then providing an anonymous tip to authorities. The plan was placed in motion, but the cartel failed to move Camarena’s body to the ranch as intended. Instead the body of Camarena was placed on the side of the road near the intended target. The body of Camarena was located and an autopsy was performed before the DEA was notified.
